Las diversas circunstancias quecoadyuvan en este nuevo escenario, como la necesidad de madera y carbon para la armada,la apertura del canal de Suez, las politicas de expansion, etc., ponen el foco en los aspectosgeograficos y naturalistas de las islas, en sus recursos y en el conocimiento del interior frentea la predominancia de las cuestiones maritimas que anteceden a esta nueva etapa. En estegiro de intereses y perspectivas, la cartografia se mostrara como una herramienta necesariapara el nuevo orden colonial. La realizada por los servicios de minas y forestal, la Direccionde Hidrografia o el Deposito de la Guerra son pruebas del nuevo esfuerzo territorial emprendidocon sus logros y limitaciones. En los conflictos belicos iniciados en 1896 con la guerra hispano-filipina, la cartografia mostrara todo su valor, convirtiendose en un preciado tesoro para las pretensiones imperiales de EE.UU. en el Archipielago. A centerpiece public works project of the Inspeccion General de Obras Publicas (IGOP), it intended to provide solutions to the problems of health and sanitation in a rapidly urbanizing Manila. Used as a testament of modern engineering in the colony, the infrastructure was central in cleansing, domesticating, and transforming the urban body of the city. This paper tackles the techno-scientific innovations that characterized the Manila waterworks project to sanitize and domesticatethe murky, dirty, sickly and unruly body of the modern city. The paper traces how this sanitary infrastructure project was conceptualized and concretized, how water was located, pumped, stored, and distributed to the colonial capital. Furthermore, it interrogates how water was used both as a tool and symbol to cleanse and modernize the colonial body and colonial city. It provides a discussion of the extent of damage caused by the two earthquakes, and the post-disaster responses of the Spanish civil government in Manila and the central government in Madrid. This study also narrates the varying interpretations of the earthquakes, from the point of view of the Church, and from the perspective of the scientific community.The two earthquakes became profound catalysts for the changes that had taken place in its immediate aftermath. First, it prompted the civil government to initiate and implement a systematic disaster response plan and to institutionalize earthquake studies as a prerequisite in crafting seismic engineering and architectural plans for the communities. Second, what transpired after the two earthquakes revealed the long-standing problems in the bureaucracy and the need to implement modern and scientific approaches to urban planning and infrastructural integrity of the city.
