Trapped energy modes of vibration are obtained by appropriate contouring or beveling of the plate surfaces. The effect of contouring on energy trapping depends strongly on the crystalline orientation and the selected thickness harmonic mode of vibration. The earlier work of D. S. Stevens and H. F. Tiersten (1986) on the analysis of the SC-cut contoured quartz resonators for the C-mode of vibration is extended to obtain results for any of the three thickness (A-, B-, or C-) modes of vibration of any doubly-rotated cut of quartz.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":412254,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Symposium on Ultrasonics","volume":"1994 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-12-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131148470","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It may be possible to estimate the structural characteristics from the spectrum, because the ultrasonic power spectrum shapes may be affected by the statistical distributions of the point scatterers in the random media. Fractal theory is adapted to estimate the power spectrum shapes. The fractal dimension is used for characterization of the complexities of the power spectrum shape because it indicates the complexity or roughness of figures. The relations of mean spacing vs. fractal dimension and irregularity vs. fractal dimension obtained by numerical calculations are given. An experiment for ultrasonic imaging by mapping the fractal dimension is described.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":412254,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Symposium on Ultrasonics","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-12-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130323368","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This extraction technique is an adaptation of the Electronic Industries Association (EIA) standard for measurement of the equivalent electrical parameters of quartz crystal units. This method is based on separating the complicated circuits into subcircuits of a form that the EIA-512 procedure can reduce. Bond wire inductance and resistance and package capacitance have been included in this fashion. Once these elements have been extracted from the high-frequency, package parasitic resonance data, their effects are subtracted from the main resonance data by Z- and Y-parameter manipulations. Longitudinal modes can also be extracted in this manner. Two resonators that support the validity of the theory and assumptions are presented.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":412254,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Symposium on Ultrasonics","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-12-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130882761","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The barometric sensitivity appears to be more stringent than the acceleration sensitivity. It is shown that, for a wide range of aspect ratio and package structure, a support shape which cancels sensitivity to the acceleration in one direction may be found. The optimization of both pressure and vibration sensitivity may not be easily obtained through such geometrical adjustment. The result is that a tradeoff must be found to optimize both acceleration and pressure sensitivity. Possible resonator configurations are discussed with regard to simultaneous pressure and acceleration sensitivity optimization.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":412254,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Symposium on Ultrasonics","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-12-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128691133","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is shown that for certain orientations of the bias electric field the LiNbO/sub 3/ crystal becomes optically biaxial. The Bragg angles of noncollinear tunable filter configurations in the artificially biaxial LiNbO/sub 3/ are determined explicitly and their dependences on the intensity of the bias electric field and the acoustic wave propagation direction are treated analytically. It is shown that for, bias electric field intensities widely used in LiNbO/sub 3/ devices, 10 kV/cm to 100 kV/cm, up to four noncollinear AEOTF configurations can be obtained for certain directions of acoustic wave propagation.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":412254,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Symposium on Ultrasonics","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-12-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125835985","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Of the divergent wave emitted by the transmitter, a specific angular-spectrum component that is incident on a specimen at the Rayleigh critical angle excites a leaky SAW on the specimen surface. Of various angular-spectrum components of the reflected wave, the receiver selectively detects the specularly reflected wave and the reradiation of the leaky SAW. These two components take the same path when the specimen is brought to a specific position. Since the two components are in opposite phase at the position, their interaction causes a so-called null zone in the reflected beam and a corresponding intensity minimum is detected by the receiver.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":412254,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Symposium on Ultrasonics","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-12-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126644757","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A thin membrane deflector is shown to allow the use of miniature hydrophones without risk of damage.
