The analysis focuses on four important aspects of Bonhoeffer's interpretation: its starting point(s), the non- or impersonal nature of imprecation, the ethics of imprecation that results in an abdication of revenge-seeking, and the Christological interpretation of God's wrath against the enemies. Several of Bonhoeffer's insights are echoed in more recent interpretations, though without his Christological emphasis. This leads one to evaluate the merits and demerits of Bonhoeffer's Christological interpretation in its original context and its aftermath. A larger biblical–theological perspective suggests that Bonhoeffer's Christological approach is, in the end, too narrow, even as it is also too totalizing.","PeriodicalId":41209,"journal":{"name":"Toronto Journal of Theology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2021-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45665118","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a settler Christian, I here share my first halting steps to undertaking such a reckoning. It is a story about finally starting to listen, getting unsettled, and staying there. I have also found it to be a lament of sorts— a journey plunging me into a kind of blue that is perhaps different than the blues sung by those who have directly suffered the poverty and violence of colonialism’s oppressive legacy. It is, finally, a lament over the destructive “twilight civilization” (to use Cornel West’s phrase) this legacy has wrought—an unsustainable civilization that in a variety of ways dehumanizes everyone, whether we share the identity of the oppressor, the victim, or a mixture of both. Perhaps lament, then, is the spiritual practice settler Christians must first take up as we strive to work through and work free from our damaged past. That is, perhaps this reckoning calls settler Christians to perform a certain leavetaking before we may truly join our hearts and voices with those who seek to keep faith with all their fellow humans as well as the rest of God’s good Creation.","PeriodicalId":41209,"journal":{"name":"Toronto Journal of Theology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2021-11-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47533737","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In it, I present and offer a proposal for intercultural theology. I start with a recent remark by Pope Francis about bridges (and walls), which leads to the notion of intercultural theology. I then say something about the ways in which intercultural theology has been understood and argue for a specific, concrete approach. I argue that, while such a theology can be part of what it is to do theology in general, it is also a personal task and vocation. After replying to some concerns about what intercultural theology may involve, I offer some concrete illustrations of how one might concretely engage in intercultural theology or theologizing. I conclude that, while intercultural theology may be disruptive, it can be of constructive service to theology today.ml>","PeriodicalId":41209,"journal":{"name":"Toronto Journal of Theology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2021-11-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47982748","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is based on the identity of Maluku and the awareness of being Indonesian ingrained in the life of the Maluku Protestant Church, and this becomes very anomalous if the characteristics and dynamics of life of the unit of observation that are later discovered and displayed are actually westernized. The results of this article are first, to encourage writing down that imagination, which is still in the form of tacit knowledge, as explicit knowledge in books; second, to make theological beliefs the basis for developing imagination; third, to sew sociological facts together with theological premises in one narrative.","PeriodicalId":41209,"journal":{"name":"Toronto Journal of Theology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2021-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48244377","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Chapman","doi":"10.3138/tjt-2021-0046","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.3138/tjt-2021-0046","url":null,"abstract":"For Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the voice of the Psalms is theologically identical to the voice of Christ. Bonhoeffer’s primary warrant for this conviction came from the New Testament’s pattern of discourse. Yet, as Rein Bos has demonstrated, the New Testament employs Old Testament texts in at least four senses: a christological sense, an Israel-oriented sense, an ecclesial sense, and an eschatological sense. Bonhoeffer’s interpretive practice did in fact explore these additional senses of the Psalms, but his hermeneutical theory remained too narrow to do them adequate justice. Bonhoeffer’s example demonstrates how christological interpretation of the Psalms is necessary for Christian theology and praxis but not sufficient.","PeriodicalId":41209,"journal":{"name":"Toronto Journal of Theology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2021-10-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49069397","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
