In Colombia, only purple type garlic is grown.However, there is a gap in access, government regulations and knowledge of the cultivars planted, which limits its optimal commercialization. The objective of this study was to evaluate the financial behavior of Nacional and Peruvian cultivars in the region of Cundinamarca and Boyaca highland.Sowing was carried out from 24 to the 29 of February of 2012, with a density of 210,000 plants/ha.Before of bulbs grew, 85 to 90 days after sowing (DAS), the National cultivar registered a lower dry weight of the aerial part (49 %) and bulb formation (57 %), number of leaves (10 %) and plant height (11 %) versus the Peruvian cultivar; nonetheless,after the 117 DAS there was no difference. The growth and phenology of both cultivations were quite similar. Approximately one month before harvest (130 DAS) the cost/ha was es imated to be 17.3 % higher in the Peruvian cultivar, mainly due to the larger amount of seed used (95.6 %). It is important to know different aspects of national honeys in order to verify the compliance with the existing Colombian requirements and International regulations, but also to increase its exploitation considering its quality and distinctive features. Physicochemical parameters are basic factors that determine the final quality of honey. The objective of this research was to assess commercial eucalyptus honeys developed with Apis mellifera in the region of Villanueva (Colombia). Water activity (0.54), pH (5.02), free acidity (14.58 meq kg-1), moisture (16.45 %),color (91.65 mm PFund),electrical conductivity (81.3 mS cm-1), minerals (ash, 0.81 %), reducing sugars (69.95 %), sucrose (1.48 %), hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF, 67.29 mg kg-1), diastase activity (3.21 °Gothe),phenolic content (76.57 mg Quercetin/100 g), flavonoids (5.96 mg Gallic acid/100 g) and proline (180.68 mg kg-1) were determined in 24 honey samples following standard and usual procedures. The samples analyzed meet both national and international regulations for free acidity, moisture and HMF. No adulteration treatments were evidenced from proline content. However, the low diastase activity suggests that the honey went through some kind of overheating, probably during its storage under the high temperatures typical in the area of production. Usual estimations of phenolic and flavonoids content were detected. In conclusion,the tested samples fulfill some of the requirements for their commercialization. However, there is a gap between the knowledge available and its adoption by farmers, which these services have not been able to reduce substantially. Therefore, the object of this study was to analyze research trends in rural extension to identify approaches that contribute to making recommendations for rural extension services, aimed at developing self-management abilities in rural communities. The study of extension problems,innovation networks, social network analysis, partnership and knowledge sharing were identified as main rural extension research trends. These mites have been always considered disrupting agents of livestock systems, where they are recognized as the cause of economic and production losses. However, their ecological role is important for the dynamic equilibrium of the production systems bovine meat or milk. Knowing their biology and ecology can shed light on the sanitary decisions made in relation to these organisms. This review article presents issues related to classification, characteristics, and life cycle of hard ticks and relations vector-parasite-host. However, pear itself does not provide the amount of protein required for cattle feeding, so alternatives to improve its nutritional quality have been studied. On these grounds, the objective of this study was to evaluate the parameters of solid state fermentation, and compositional energy value of a protein food based on pears (Pyrus communis) with apparent physical damage. A completely random design was used to evaluate three treatments; these correspond to percentages of inclusion of calcium carbonate (0.25, 0.50, 0.75) formulation based on already established (40% pear, 25% rice flour, 25% wheat bran and 10% urea), the parameters evaluated were: pH, ashes (CZ), crude protein (CP) and crude fiber (CF), and they were recorded at 0, 24, 48 and 72 hours. As a result, it was found that the pH dropped gradually for each treatment and at each sampling period; however, there were no significant differences. The lower value at the end of the process is recorded T2 (0.25) with 4.66, followed by T3 (0.50) with 4.50, the ash reached values of up to 6% with T3, and T2 (0.50) reached the highest percentages in fiber and crude protein. Es una especie-plaga con poca informacion taxonomica y biologia desconocida, por tanto, se propuso proveer informacion sobre su biologia y datos morfologicos. A partir de larvas colectadas en campo, se conformo el pie de cria en casa de malla (28,75 ± 2,53 °C y 57,28 ± 8,16 HR). Se enviaron muestras de especimenes al Museo Nacional de Historia Natural (Washington, EE. UU.), para su identificacion. Mediante observaciones directas y mediciones del ancho de la capsula cefalica, se determinaron los estadios larvales. La polilla fue identificada como Strepsicrates smithiana, especie no registrada para Colombia. El estado larval presento cinco estadios y la duracion total del ciclo biologico fue de 42,93 ± 1,68 dias, con un periodo de incubacion de 5,07 ± 0,37. La fase de larva, prepupa, pupa y adulto tuvieron una duracion promedio de 18,17 ± 2,03; 3,27 ± 0,45; 10,57 ± 1,04 y 5,87 ± 1,2 dias, respectivamente. Los huevos son colocados de forma individual sobre brotes jovenes de guayaba. Al alimentarse, las larvas ocasionan reduccion del area foliar, amarillamiento y muerte de brotes terminales. En la etapa inicial, el dano se caracteriza por raspaduras en hojas y perforacion en brotes terminales, seguido de un enrollamiento de hojas ocasionado por larvas mas desarrolladas. A mixture of goat’s and cow’s semi-skimmed milk with oats, mango and stevia was selected for the production of a yogurt. The objective of this research was to develop a yogurt with goat’s and cow’s semi-skimmed milk, using oats, mango y stevia evaluating their effect on the physical, chemical, structural,nutritional and sensorial characteristics during storage,while drawing the added value provided by goat’s and cow’s semi-skimmed milk, oats, mango and stevia as a sweetener and its use in industry. The yogurt was made taking into consideration three mixtures of goat and cow milk 90 %-10 %, 70 %-30 %-50 %-50 % respectively, sensory analysis determined that the best mix corresponded to 70 %-30 %. Eight formulations 70 %-30 % of yogurt were prepared by combining oats, mango and stevia at different concentrations before and during incubation. The experiment was 15 days long and the pH, acidity and syneresis were evaluated. The best formulation was selected and compared to a mixture of goat`s and cow`s semi-skimmed milk with sucrose. The physicochemical, microbiological,proximal, sensory and structural characteristics were determined for both treatments during 30 days. In Colombia, information about its causal agent and the external factors that foster its development is scarse,which lead us to carry on a preliminary research. In three avocado farms of Fresno municipality, the severity of the spot in Lorena cultivar fruits was evaluated by using five types of barriers and a control, from the inflorescence phase to the developed fruit. The symptoms of the “avocado spot” in Lorena’ cultivar were characterized. Samples from different plant organs were sent to four diagnostic laboratories. Besides, in ten farms of Fresno municipality,the severity of the spot was measured on Lorena, Hass and Choquette cultivars by carrying out bi-weekly samplings.Simultaneously, in eleven farms in Fresno, the culture labors,pesticides, production costs and incomes were recorded.The treatment that was significantly different from the control was the fungicide application. The phytopathological diagnosis identified two pathogens, Glomerella sp. (Anamorphic:Colletotrichum sp.) and Cercospora sp. related to the spot symptoms. The Lorena cultivar was the most affected by “the spot”, it caused an increase of 3.65 % of the production costs to growers and the crop incomes decreased 21.65 % due to fruits with “spot” symptoms. This information is required for the hybrids OxG of oil palms under the conditions of the palm growing Colombian region. In two soils with different moisture retention and air space, the growth and development in nursery of hybrid oil palms OxG F1 (Elaeis oleifera x Elaeis guineensis) and Tenera DxP (Elaeis guineensis x Elaeis guineensis) were evaluated. Plants of OxG material were larger and accumulated more biomass in most of its constituent bodies in comparison with plants of DxP material. Likewise, both plants were quite different in the order of preference distribution and accumulation of assimilated species at the petiole basis, stem and petiole. In comparison with DxP, the OxG material showed the differential characteristic to allocate more of their assimilated species growth the plant root system. Moreover, it was determined that OxG plants exhibit better growth and development compared with DxP plants in nursery stage with high moisture retention and low aeration soils. Guerrero, Judith Guevara Agudelo","doi":"10.21930/RCTA.VOL16_NUM2_ART:371","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.21930/RCTA.VOL16_NUM2_ART:371","url":null,"abstract":"For the last 15 years, Colombia has developed a research process leading to the expansion of its agricultural frontier at the flat well drained savannas of the Eastern Plains, by improving predominantly acid soils with liming to increase base saturation with depth, vertical liming —as its referred locally—, crop rotation with rice, corn, soybeans, and with the potential to include other crops like cotton in the rotation system. To achieve this, a pioneering research in Colombia was conducted to determine the adaptation of cotton in the acid conditions of the high plains improved sheets. An Agronomic evaluation test was developed using five elite genotypes of cotton in a design of a randomized complete block at four locations in soils with base saturation above 80 %. The results identified a genotype (LC-156), which presented an adaptation to the high plains, associated with an average yield of 2.2 t/ha of cottonseed, 1.5 t/ha of cotton fiber type medium-long, a percentage of fiber extraction above 36.0 %.
