An attribute grammar approach to shape recognition combines both advantages of syntactic and statistical methods and makes shape recognition more accurate and efficient. However, the time complexity of a sequential shape recognition algorithm using attribute grammar is O(n/sup 3/) where n is the length of an input string. The paper presents a parallel shape recognition algorithm and its implementation on a fixed-size VLSI architecture. The proposed algorithm has time complexity O(n/sup 3//k/sup 2/). Experiments have also been conducted to verify the performance of the proposed algorithm. The proposed algorithm and architecture could be very useful for image processing, pattern recognition and related areas.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":410961,"journal":{"name":"[1992] Proceedings. 11th IAPR International Conference on Pattern Recognition","volume":"69 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-08-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123142628","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, a computational vision approach is presented for the estimation of 2-D translation, rotation, and scale from two partially overlapping images. The approach has the following features: (1) an illuminant direction estimator is used to obtain an initial estimate of camera rotation; (2) feature points are located based on a Gabor wavelet model for detecting local curvature discontinuities; (3) estimation of rotation and translation is formulated as a linear problem; and (4) hierarchical coarse-to-fine matching is used. This results in a fast and novel algorithm that produces good results even when large rotations and scale changes have occurred between the two frames and the images are devoid of significant features. Several applications of the algorithm are presented.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":410961,"journal":{"name":"[1992] Proceedings. 11th IAPR International Conference on Pattern Recognition","volume":"73 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-08-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124491948","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The next stage is to characterize the local geometry of these surfaces in order to extract points or lines on which registration and tracking procedures can rely. To avoid the need to find links between 3D edge detection and local surface approximation, the authors propose a method involving computing the curvatures on the edge points from the second partial derivatives of the image. The 3D image is treated as a hypersurface (a 3D dimensional manifold) in R/sup 4/. Relationships are established between the curvatures of the hypersurface and the curvatures of the surface traced by the edge points. The maximum curvature at a point of the hypersurface is expressed with the second partial derivatives of the 3D image. These curvatures can also be directly computed in R/sup 3/ using a realistic assumption, but it may be more efficient to smooth the data in R/sup 4/. For instance, in the case where the contours are not iso-contours (i.e. the gradient at an edge point does not approximate the normal to the surface) the only differential invariants of the image are in R/sup 4/. This approach could also be used to detect corners or vertices. Experimental results are presented.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":410961,"journal":{"name":"[1992] Proceedings. 11th IAPR International Conference on Pattern Recognition","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-08-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132200424","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An interesting repercussion of this system is its ability to solve problems where utilized data for reasoning is stored in a geographic information system and which solution may be expressed by mean of a priority map. It works in a two step process consisting of a first one of usual classification followed by a second one consisting in previous classification improvement. The authors have chosen this approach because it permits one to integrate in a flexible way expert knowledge and know-how in satellite image interpretation.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":410961,"journal":{"name":"[1992] Proceedings. 11th IAPR International Conference on Pattern Recognition","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-08-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134436440","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Formulae specifying how GP's transform from fine to coarse resolution exist for a restricted set of computationaly tractable cost functions and, while numerical routines solve the problem in principle, they are hopelessly slow for that class of spatially inhomogeneous GP's (site parameters) which depend on the image data. The authors provide a general theorem which specifies how site parameters coarsen for deterministic linear block coarsening. The theorem can be used to accelerate the annealing of realistic image models.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":410961,"journal":{"name":"[1992] Proceedings. 11th IAPR International Conference on Pattern Recognition","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-08-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133658023","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The authors first present a two-view motion algorithm and then extend it to multiple views. The two-view algorithm requires generally 6 pairs of point correspondences to give unique solution of the motion parameters. However, when the used points lie on a Maybank quadric, the algorithm requires 7 pairs of point correspondences to give double solutions. Object-centered motion representations and a motion model of constant acceleration are used to estimate motion parameters from long image sequences. The algorithm guarantees globally optimal solution. Since the algorithm does not involve structure parameters, it contains the least number of unknowns and is hence more efficient and robust than the existing ones. Experimental results with real image data are presented. The same method can be applied to solve for motions described by second or higher orders of polynomials.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":410961,"journal":{"name":"[1992] Proceedings. 11th IAPR International Conference on Pattern Recognition","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-08-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127308802","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
