Unfortunately, a train is a very challenging environment to provide a mobile network service to due to attenuation and bad coverage leading to dropped phone calls and unreachable Internet services. Improving mobile network service on-board trains, however, is costly and should be planned carefully. A multi-criteria comparison of different deployment options is therefore essential toward an optimal investment decision. But, the impact of the choice of on-board distribution system is often overlooked. This article compares three types of on-board signal repeaters side-by-side: IP-based data access points, wideband repeaters and small cells. The differences in terms of network coverage, human exposure, deployment cost, revenue model and telecommunications policy are analyzed for each of them.","PeriodicalId":410892,"journal":{"name":"2014 16th International Telecommunications Network Strategy and Planning Symposium (Networks)","volume":"82 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133446831","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, with the introduction of novel configurable and dynamic mechanisms, such as Software Defined Networking (SDN) and their programmable nature, a unique opportunity for finally solving such issues presents itself. This paper presents a solution based on SDN, which improves network resources management and the fault tolerance of the network elements, applied to a data center management scenario. Results show that the proposed solution achieves minimum packet loss when network links fail, as well as an acceptable topology adaptation time for data center operation.","PeriodicalId":410892,"journal":{"name":"2014 16th International Telecommunications Network Strategy and Planning Symposium (Networks)","volume":"106 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124404395","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, many other factors can influence what users perceive as good Quality of Service (QoS). In Portugal, ANACOM, the telecommunications regulator, performs frequent studies to evaluate the quality of the Internet access service offered by the various Portuguese ISPs. Traditionally, these studies have been carried out by resorting to carefully selected users, which run the measurement tests from their homes using special purpose equipment. This methodology makes the studies very expensive to setup and run, especially in rural areas. In this paper, we address the problem of large-scale, user-driven, measurements of the Internet access QoS on broadband connections, both wireless and wired. Our solution is based on three components: a software agent running on the participant's computer or smartphone, which performs scheduled or on demand measurements on its behalf, one or more endpoints against which the measurements are carried out and a central server that collects and processes the measurement results, and allows remote configuration and reporting through a Web portal. The agent reports geographical information whenever possible, enabling both nationwide and regional studies. To validate our proposal we developed a prototype including all components and tested it extensively. The results indicate that our system is able to operate correctly and scales well to large deployments. This work was the basis for the measurement system currently being deployed by ANACOM.","PeriodicalId":410892,"journal":{"name":"2014 16th International Telecommunications Network Strategy and Planning Symposium (Networks)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130612375","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Later, Danilewicz and Kabaciński extended BWA to the variable window sizes variant in [2]. Some authors used this concept for different architectures of nonblocking multicast switching networks (Danilewicz, Hwang) [3], [4]. In this paper, performance evaluation of BWA in blocking multicast log2(N, 0, p) switching networks is presented. Different settings of BWA have an impact on a performance of the algorithm. In this paper, we investigate which parameters of BWA give better results in terms of blocking probability in blocking multicast log2(N, 0, p) switching networks.","PeriodicalId":410892,"journal":{"name":"2014 16th International Telecommunications Network Strategy and Planning Symposium (Networks)","volume":"71 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121312182","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed scheme utilizes the medium access control (MAC) procedure of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission technology, which has been used to achieve transmission with a high link rate in WLANs in recent years; however, the transmission efficiency degrades at the MAC data service access point (SAP), although a high transmission link rate is achieved at the physical (PHY) layer. The transmission efficiency achieved by the proposed scheme is confirmed at a high level of approximately 97% when used with an aggregation MAC protocol data unit (A-MPDU) by computer simulations, which is better than that of Ethernet. An A-MPDU has the effect of improving the transmission efficiency because it achieves a burst transmission of data packets. Furthermore, the results of our theoretical calculations correspond with the computer simulation results, indicating that the proposed scheme is indeed efficient and reliable.","PeriodicalId":410892,"journal":{"name":"2014 16th International Telecommunications Network Strategy and Planning Symposium (Networks)","volume":"2003 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127462737","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This requires a communication system based on mechanisms that self-adapt to dynamic conditions and that are able to work under heterogeneous networks. The proposed Cognitive Routable Ad-hoc Network (CRAN) protocol allows efficient and distributed information sharing within the same hierarchy and between distinct hierarchical levels. The CRAN mechanisms contain the control plane, which includes the discovery mechanism and the autonomous adaptation when topology changes, and the data plane, which is responsible to forward tactical messages within the platoon. The evaluation results show that CRAN provides a fast knowledge forwarding with high message delivery and requires small bandwidth. This ensures real-time situation updates, improving operational reality awareness and more accurate decisions, improving the overall operation results.","PeriodicalId":410892,"journal":{"name":"2014 16th International Telecommunications Network Strategy and Planning Symposium (Networks)","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122855261","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The necessary prerequisites for proper dimensioning (capacity planning) of the access network are careful modeling of the arrival traffic characteristics and proper QoE to QoS (Quality of Service, e.g., delay) mapping. The Internet traffic is known to be bursty and self-similar and therefore in this paper an analytical modeling of the arrival traffic is developed based on a two-state Markov Modulated Poisson Process, MMPP(2). The performance in terms of inter-arrival time of the packets and the resulting queueing delay distribution of the MMPP(2)/D/1 system is found to be a good approximation for the packet delays of the VoIP, web and video traffic.","PeriodicalId":410892,"journal":{"name":"2014 16th International Telecommunications Network Strategy and Planning Symposium (Networks)","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114632743","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The strategy is designed to handle partial link failures. We present two variants of the strategy and analyze their pros and cons. We show that the initial strategy is not directly implementable to cope with severe link failures such as total link failures. Therefore, we propose a restricted flow adjustment version as well as its distributed variant that can be used for the total link failures case. Numerical experiments for different settings and test networks illustrate the findings.","PeriodicalId":410892,"journal":{"name":"2014 16th International Telecommunications Network Strategy and Planning Symposium (Networks)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122632888","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Every resource of the developed cost model defines its contribution to the investment and operation costs, which allows for a detailed tracking and reporting of capital and operation expenditures from single elements to complete network abstraction. The internal structure of the model makes use of template replication that allows for the modelling of a generalized modular structure of a network location in great detail, which is in turn instantiated and parameterized to as many instances as required to match the respective operator network. Several techniques are described to demonstrate simple modelling solutions for complex network structures. This combined CAPEX and OPEX model is run for several scenarios to exemplarily demonstrate its usage for strategic modelling of architectural design decisions. The software “Strategic Telecoms Evaluation Model (STEM)” was used for the model development and result analysis.","PeriodicalId":410892,"journal":{"name":"2014 16th International Telecommunications Network Strategy and Planning Symposium (Networks)","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133421225","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
