In order to satisfy these requirements it is necessary to implement QoS mechanisms in the software and hardware used in multiservice cellular networks. QoS mechanisms in the LTE network can be implemented, for example, in the radio interface. In the article, a new analytical model for a determination of traffic characteristics of RT and NRT traffic streams serviced in the LTE radio interface is proposed. The model has been validated by a number of simulation experiments carried out by the authors. The conducted experiments have confirmed that the proposed analytical model can be used for engineering calculations.","PeriodicalId":410892,"journal":{"name":"2014 16th International Telecommunications Network Strategy and Planning Symposium (Networks)","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127056600","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We assume that users' preferences are described in terms of the utility which reflects their willingness to pay. Each Internet Service Provider allocate his links' capacities among users to maximize his total profit. Users choose the Internet Service Provider which offers them the highest transmission rate. We model such a situation with game theoretical framework. This approach allows to examine in detail the interdependency between teletraffic market participants (network operators). We present an algorithm which enables finding all Nash equilibria of the proposed game. Introduced method is illustrated with a numerical example.","PeriodicalId":410892,"journal":{"name":"2014 16th International Telecommunications Network Strategy and Planning Symposium (Networks)","volume":"186 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114298540","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As for network service providers, OPCInet provides them with large switching capacity of low energy consumption, high flexibility, and efficient resource utilization in the form of a simple control mechanism. This paper presents the recent progress made in the development and deployment of an OPCInet. We have developed OPCI nodes, capable of Layer 3 switching between the Ethernet frame and the optical packet in the optical packet edge part. Burst-tolerant optical amplifier and optical buffer with optical fiber delays in 100Gbps optical packet switching part have also been developed. The header processor, capable of longest-prefix matching with very-low power consumption search engine LSIs, is also developed. Toward deployment of the OPCInet, we have succeeded in using the OPCI nodes in a lab-network that has an access to the Internet. Network management system for shifting from R&D to operation has come a step closer to reality.","PeriodicalId":410892,"journal":{"name":"2014 16th International Telecommunications Network Strategy and Planning Symposium (Networks)","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132760346","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Energy-aware and energy-aware & short-path routing techniques were used. Simulations were made based on a real network topology as well as on forecasts of traffic matrix based on statistical data from 2005 up to 2017. Energy aware routing optimization model on IPoWDM network, showed the lowest energy consumption along all years, and once compared with energy-aware & short-path routing, has led to an overall reduction in energy consumption up to 29%, expecting to save even more than shortest-path routing.","PeriodicalId":410892,"journal":{"name":"2014 16th International Telecommunications Network Strategy and Planning Symposium (Networks)","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124518299","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, corporate customers have to content with a helpless bystander and victim roles due to the lack of tools to detect and counter-act Internet-scale traffic redirection. An world-wide redirection of target traffic will compromise unencrypted communications and allow the deployment of various attacks on encrypted communications. This paper proposes a world-wide distributed probing methodology to detect traffic routing variations. Upon detection, a corporate customer cannot act in terms of Internet-scale routing but can warn its network service providers and request consequent actions. Nevertheless, upon warning, the corporate customer can locally deploy extreme security policies, like terminating sensible deferrable communications (database/information synchronization, audio/video calls) and increasing the required encryption level for public services. The proposed solution is easily deployed and has a very low implementation cost. The proof-of-concept presented in this paper uses worldwide deployed probes to detected specific traffic redirection. The results obtained reveal that the proposed methodology, due to this world-wide spreading of the probes and joint analysis of measurements, is able: (i) to detect Internet-scale traffic redirection attacks, and (ii) ignore localized licit inner-AS rerouting.","PeriodicalId":410892,"journal":{"name":"2014 16th International Telecommunications Network Strategy and Planning Symposium (Networks)","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132154050","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Energy conserving solutions are needed to maintain their sustainability. With access networks being the leading contributor to overall network energy demand, their energy-aware operation is of primary importance. Future access networks are expected to be based on a hybrid wireless-optical architecture. This paper examines such a network consisting of a small cell LTE wireless part and a wireline PON backhaul. We investigate the trade-off between serving the user population with a reduced number of active cells and the quality of network services. We explore two directions: selectively switching off currently dispensable cells with the aim of reducing power consumption and loosing some cells due to a failure in the underlying PON network. In case of the PON the effect of the optical topology is also considered. Simulations are used to quantify the impact on network services from the standpoint of network availability and throughput.","PeriodicalId":410892,"journal":{"name":"2014 16th International Telecommunications Network Strategy and Planning Symposium (Networks)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133765488","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Daily and weekly traffic fluctuations as well as yearly traffic growth are considered when analyzing the power consumption. Low power mode in optoelectronic devices (sleep-mode and rate adaptive capabilities) is implemented within a traffic-aware networking approach. The impact of dedicated 1:1 protection in a dynamic network scenario is considered and a comparison is made with the unprotected case. A GMPLS control plane is implemented and used to re-configure the power-adaptive devices and connections. Results show that symbol-rate adaptation provides high savings for unprotected scenarios (37% energy savings w.r.t. unprotected Baseline), while for the protected scenarios better results are obtained for modulation format adaptation which includes sleep-mode (57.1% energy savings w.r.t. protected Baseline). Moreover, compared to the Baseline scenarios the Mixed adaptation, combining both symbol-rate and modulation format, is the most power-efficient strategy providing 39% energy savings for unprotected scenario and 70% energy savings for dedicated protection scenario.","PeriodicalId":410892,"journal":{"name":"2014 16th International Telecommunications Network Strategy and Planning Symposium (Networks)","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114867192","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As the Internet is a collection of Autonomous Systems (AS), most of the time the communication endpoints belong to different ASes, so that all the ASes traversed by the communication must cooperate in order to offer end-to-end guarantees. Yet each AS is usually unwilling to disclose any detail about its internal network. To address this confidentiality issue we propose a system where each AS publishes a list of offers, specifying the QoS guarantees between its entry and exit points, without specifying anything else about its internal network. As proposed in several works, it is also possible for ASes to form alliances, which can be seen as “macro ASes” that publish the available offers between the entry and exit points of the alliance. In this paper we present ACQA, an algorithm that can find end-to-end paths satisfying given QoS constraints by combining the offers of several alliances and/or ASes.","PeriodicalId":410892,"journal":{"name":"2014 16th International Telecommunications Network Strategy and Planning Symposium (Networks)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115541484","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Traditionally, either active or passive measurements are considered. While active measurements allow to know exactly the workload injected by the application into the network, the passive measurements can offer a more detailed view of transport and network layer impacts. In this paper, we present a hybrid approach in which active throughput measurements are regularly run while a passive measurement tool monitors the generated packets. This allows us to correlate the application layer measurements obtained by the active tool with the more detailed view offered by the passive monitor. The proposed methodology has been implemented following the mPlane reference architecture, tools have been installed in the Fastweb network, and we collect measurements for more than three months. We report then a subset of results that show the benefits obtained when correlating active and passive measurements. Among results, we pinpoint cases of congestion, of ADSL misconfiguration, and of modem issues that impair throughput obtained by the users.","PeriodicalId":410892,"journal":{"name":"2014 16th International Telecommunications Network Strategy and Planning Symposium (Networks)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129725543","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
