This study investigates the socio-economic processes behind this growth in interest. It proposes an analytical framework that examines sleep in the relationships among the body, work, and the rhythms of everyday life within the constraints of today’s capitalist work regime. In this framework, the concept of time pressure is significant for understanding practices and approaches to sleep, as well as the structural processes and contradictions of contemporary capitalism. Having a work life and accelerating one’s social life are the main determinants of time experience. While sleep, which is a very important part of an employee’s life, becomes limited or restricted, it is nevertheless essential for the sake of efficiency and continuing activity in business and daily life. This study investigates the ambivalent position of sleep with reference to Hartmut Rosa’s concept of social acceleration. This ambivalent position is found to be constructed by the trio of acceleration, flexibility, and time pressure, and it is essentially defined by capitalism. ABSTRACT This study proposes a conceptual framework within the discipline of sociology to the problem of sleep, accepted as a natural activity of human beings. Based on Hartmut Rosa’s (2009, 2013) concept of social acceleration, this study focuses on the ambivalent position of sleep, revealed within the tripartite relationship of social acceleration, flexible working regimes, and time pressure. The claim of the study is that this position is determined within the interaction of deceleration and acceleration. Sleep, perhaps the most important deceleration practice in human life, has both preventive and supportive functions in capitalist acceleration. The combination of these two functions, which seem to be in opposition, indi cates the ambivalent position of sleep at the present time. coordination between rhythms and conflicts and contradictions are emphasized. This study proposes a framework that does not ignore the distinctions between the historicity of social time, as conditioned by the mode of production, and the experiences of different social groups in different places (see Col -ley, Henriksson, Niemeyer, & Seddon, 2012). The basic concept used for this purpose is that of social acceleration, as developed by Hartmut Rosa (2009, 2013). Another process related to acceleration, to be discussed over the time theme, is the flexibility of the working regime. This article will primarily ex amine acceleration and flexibility in the context of time pressure. This discussion is undertaken to show that the triad of acceleration, flexibility, and time pressure are the defining elements of today’s capitalism. The article will then seek to make sense of the position of sleep in capitalism for the result of these three processes. Finally, the ambivalent nature of the position of sleep in the interaction of decelerat","PeriodicalId":40967,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Economy Culture and Society","volume":"10 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2021-11-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82601982","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In Turkey, the achievement gap between schools is relatively high, therefore, examining the factors related to achievement is crucial to the mitigation of these differences. Related studies often utilize international large-scale assessments and yield results for particular school types. Therefore, the current study aims to determine the factors related to academic achievement by using data from a student population who took the 2020 High School Transition System (LGS). Accordingly, this This work is licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License Türkiye’de Akademik Başarının Belirleyicileri 2 Journal of Economy Culture and Society study is novel in that it examined the factors related to academic achievement in a high-stake test in Turkey. Data analysis used two-level hierarchical linear modeling. The results demonstrated that between-school variance in LGS achievement is relatively low compared with international large-scale assessments, such as the PISA and TIMSS. The variable with the most significant relationship with student achievement is socioeconomic status of the school followed by teacher seniority, school size, and class size. Moreover, the relationships of the student–teacher ratio and participation in in-service training to achievement are nonsignificant. The results highlight the importance of academic support for socioeconomically disadvantaged students.","PeriodicalId":40967,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Economy Culture and Society","volume":"177 4 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2021-08-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79212879","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on the food industry, a qualitative research approach was adopted in this study. The data was collected through semi-structured interviews with Syrian refugees in two major European cities (i.e., London and Istanbul). The theme coding analysis was performed on the qualitative data, and the analysis processes revealed three main dimensions: entrepreneur integration motives, entrepreneur integration domains, and entrepreneur integration challenges. As a result of the analysis, beyond the previous studies' findings, three interconnected fundamental relations emerged from the main dimensions' sub-categories, which contribute to a better understanding of the role of refugees' entrepreneurship motives and challenges in their integration into the host society: (1) the relation between the market accessing challenge, citizenship desire, and social equality, (2) the relation of cultural proximity and the attitude of host people in building social bridges and, (3) the relation between refugees' mental health problems and resilience in entrepreneurship achievements. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this study is among the first attempts to reveal the effects of refugees' entrepreneurship motives and challenges in their integration in the context of the food industry.","PeriodicalId":40967,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Economy Culture and Society","volume":"44 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2021-08-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88819819","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
