Whilst these swords were usually custom made to meet the requirements of individual officers, others bore regimental insignia and, more rarely, are known to have been approved as regimental patterns in lieu of the then current regulations. To date there has been very little documentation to show to what extent, if any, special patterns were widely adopted by officers of the 7th (Queen’s Own) Hussars. This paper describes extensive searches of the Wilkinson Proof Records held at the Royal Armouries, Leeds which were made in an attempt to identify such officers and to determine any uniformity in the specifications of their swords where these departed from the regulation pattern for light cavalry. Two 7th Hussars special patterns were found corresponding to periods 1857 to 1858 and 1893 to 1900, both of which gave rise to design features adopted by officers of other regiments.","PeriodicalId":40914,"journal":{"name":"Arms & Armour","volume":"18 1","pages":"65 - 98"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2021-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/17416124.2021.1886746","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41864891","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In many cases these are rifles and bayonets supplied by Germany to the Ottoman Empire during two specific periods: from 1887 to 1903, when Germany supplied all the modern infantry weaponry used by the Ottoman army; and from 1916 to 1918, when Berlin answered the request from Constantinople for the latest models of their own small arms. This article looks into the circumstances behind that request and the German response, with a focus on the bayonets that were provided, as these are most often seen in places open to the public today. In addition, a brief account is provided on how these rifles and bayonets remained in service use, often in a modified form, until the 1950s.","PeriodicalId":40914,"journal":{"name":"Arms & Armour","volume":"18 1","pages":"99 - 117"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2021-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/17416124.2021.1882793","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47534686","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At the forefront of this trend was the British Museum which worked in conjunction with the Foreign Office and Admiralty to bring them back to Britain. Yet current historiography of the region has ignored the role played by another leading government department, the Ordnance Office. The establishment of a permanent British military presence on Malta and in the Ionian Islands had a transformative effect on the study and acquisition of ancient, classical and medieval antiquities from the region as personnel from the civil and military establishments were now able to engage with them at first hand.","PeriodicalId":40914,"journal":{"name":"Arms & Armour","volume":"17 1","pages":"157 - 177"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2020-07-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/17416124.2020.1796367","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47316975","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article aims to redress those imbalances but firstly a degree of context is necessary.","PeriodicalId":40914,"journal":{"name":"Arms & Armour","volume":"17 1","pages":"178 - 197"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2020-07-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/17416124.2020.1838102","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46965876","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
