The system is PC-based and replacs an earlier version based around a PDP-11/34. Hardware comprises a 386/486 PC, two screens, and three input devices steering wheel, floor-mounted joystick, and a dlinger tapping sensor. All tests are run and analyzed by the program SMTESTS whkh is menu-driven, flexible, and user-friendly. The test battery comprises tests of visuospatial function, motor function (minimal visual content), and tracking (substantial visual and motor requirements). In most evoked potential experiments, the response is studied as a function of covariates such as stimulus characteristics and drug states. We propose a frequency domain model of multichannel evoked potential data that includes parameters representing the effects of covariates on the amplitude and latency (time from stimulus presentation) of the response. The variability of the response among scalp electrodes is modeled by the activity of one or more equivalent electrical dipoles. The frequency domain representation allows considerable data reduction, facilitates modeling of the noise, and leads to a simple approximate expression for the latency effects. We describe maximum likelihood estimation of the model parameters and construction of approximate confidence intervals for the covariate effects. We report the results of a simulation study in which we evaluated the bias of the estimators and the coverage rate of the confidence intervals. The unit consists of a lithium battery and electronic circuits mounted on a printed circuit board. These components are potted in biomedical grade epoxy which has external connections for the stimulating conductor (lead). The operating characteristics can be changed after the unit has been implanted by positioning a permanent magnet close to the unit and then removing it. The electrical stimulator is then cycled to a new operating mode. The operating life of these Units is 2-12 months depending on the application. A comparison of three known spectral estimation techniques is first presented. The methods work well at high signalto-noise ratio (SNR). However a t low SNR, which often characterises the EEG, these methods fail to produce good spectral estimates. Here, we discuss a new preprocessing technique for filtering noisy data. This technique is based on time-frequency peak filtering.
