Composed with prosodies hyper-aware of sonic quality, linguistic tension between American English and Vietnamese, and an emotional register attuned to Lai's memory of childhood reactions to an antagonistic school environment and family trauma, Inside Out and Back Again embodies in children's poetry characteristics that critics of the broader canon of Asian American poetry identify as significant to the work of establishing a respected and politically active Asian American poetics.","PeriodicalId":40856,"journal":{"name":"Childrens Literature Association Quarterly","volume":"47 1","pages":"131 - 133 - 134 - 156 - 157 - 175 - 176 - 190 - 191 - 207 - 208 - 224 - 225 - 225 - 226 - 228 - 228"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46866330","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These texts falsely claim to represent selective mutism. I propose the term \"literary selective mutism\" (LSM) to reflect the translation of this disorder in children's literature. Literary selective mutism has its own causes, symptoms, and treatment. It generates a particular plot structure and cast of characters. A disability studies perspective allows us to critique the way texts featuring LSM use this condition as a metaphor to focus on questions of silence, voice, and power.","PeriodicalId":40856,"journal":{"name":"Childrens Literature Association Quarterly","volume":"47 1","pages":"208 - 224"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49251949","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
