Abstract

Abstract:Thanhha Lai's 2011 semi-autobiographical children's novel-in-verse, Inside Out and Back Again both exemplifies and complicates the Asian American immigrant narrative in its depiction of a South Vietnamese family's flight to the United States after the fall of Saigon in 1975. Composed with prosodies hyper-aware of sonic quality, linguistic tension between American English and Vietnamese, and an emotional register attuned to Lai's memory of childhood reactions to an antagonistic school environment and family trauma, Inside Out and Back Again embodies in children's poetry characteristics that critics of the broader canon of Asian American poetry identify as significant to the work of establishing a respected and politically active Asian American poetics.
