His thought on the matter is a development of the theologies developed in the Second Vatican Council’s Lumen Gentium and John Paul II’s Ut Unum Sint, borrowing the words “exchange of gifts,” which affirms elements of sanctification present in churches “separated” from Rome. This work will expand on how Benedict XVI’s teachings about the Eucharist as the Sacrament of Unity gained merit in the Church’s ecumenical movement. This theology can be described as a “Eucharistic Ecclesiology,” and it has earlier codification made formal through the thought of Henri de Lubac. It will be done firstly through an exposition of de Lubac’s commentary in Mystici Corporis, which confirms the origins of Eucharistic Ecclesiology through Patristic and Pauline theology. Therapy is healing and restoring the sick to health; enhancement is improving the normal functioning of the body. With nanomedicine, the boundary becomes even hazier. Nanomedicine refers to the application of nanotechnology to the prevention and treatment of diseases. The European Science Foundation defines it as the science and technology of diagnosing, treating, and preventing disease and traumatic injury, relieving pain, and preserving and improving human health using molecular tools and knowledge of the human body (ESF, 2005). While nanomedicine delivers numerous and unprecedented benefits to the health and general well-being of individuals, nano- enabled human enhancement technologies will be the gateway to the transhumanist vision of immortality. Transhumanism contends that through the advancements in science and technology, we can overcome our physical and cognitive limitations, extend human lifespan, and attain perpetual existence. The blurring boundaries between enhancement will have remarkable consequences on what it means to be a human being. A supernatural power may dissolve both the natural and supernatural bonds through the exercise of the ‘ Potestas Vicaria’ of the Roman Pontiff who exercises it not as the Supreme Head of the Universal Catholic Church but in virtue of his prerogative as the “ Vicarius Christi ” on earth. The correct exercise of the divine power is based on theology and grounded in canonical science. Its right understanding and interpretation are harmonious employment of the metaphysical principles applied in theological and canon sciences. The author traces the theological foundation of the potestas vicaria in Sacred Scriptures and Sacred Traditions constantly interpreted and enriched by the Church living Magisterium. The ‘ potestas divina et vicaria’ exercise is based on the canonical provisions and praxis starting from the 7th century. The vicarious power exercised by the Church in the name of God is also referred to as ‘ Potestas Instrumentalis’ , i.e., Instrumental Power. A clearer understanding of the philosophy of this instrumental causality applied in theology and canon law implies a great deal of comprehension of some notion of causality proper of metaphysics.
