Miller","doi":"10.2307/774128","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.2307/774128","url":null,"abstract":"Colby College in Waterville, Maine opened its new Art and Music Center with an Inaugural Exhibition on October 18. At that time the Center was dedicated to Colby's retiring president, Dr. J. Seelye Bixler. Included in the exhibition were more than two hundred items from the college's permanent collection or on extended loan. Recent gifts accounted for the greater part of this total, and these came as a result of the efforts of the Friends of Art at Colby, an organization formed last spring to improve and enlarge the permanent collection at Colby. Notable among the acquisitions is a large bronze by William Zorach entitled Mother and Child which has been placed outdoors in the Montague Sculpture Court adjacent to the gallery. Other sculptures recently acquired are works by Chaim Gross, Lewis Iselin and Sidney Simon. Prints by Adolf Dehn, Lawrence Beall Smith, Clare Leighton, paintings by Karl Zerbe, Philip Elliott, Milton Avery and Kenneth Callahan have been donated within the last year.","PeriodicalId":407005,"journal":{"name":"College Art Journal","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1959-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130226518","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is concerned not with the specific content or subject matter of these studies, but with the qualities of character and personality which are encouraged by the study of the fine arts, in contrast to those developed by science and technology. It demonstrates that liberal education is incomplete when the fine arts are omitted, and that the personality of the student is then correspondingly impoverished in several ways.","PeriodicalId":407005,"journal":{"name":"College Art Journal","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1959-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114293379","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The answer to this question is not simple: art is as complex (or simple) as the individual who creates it; the problems of teaching are involved and complex. The idea of a professional level of attainment in art, which the professional's role suggests, poses a serious dilemma between what to teach and how to teach, a dilemma so serious that the antagonism between the professional artist and the art educator in many art departments has reached such major proportions as to seriously jeopardize the effectiveness of the departments. The topic under consideration, in other words, can be reworded to ask the question: what is the relationship between the role of the professional artist and the role of the art educator?","PeriodicalId":407005,"journal":{"name":"College Art Journal","volume":"101 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1959-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124624109","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
