This will be marked by an exhibition, Process: Design Drawings from the Rijksmuseum 1500-1900, to be held at the Design Museum in Den Bosch and afterwards at the Fondation Custodia in Paris. The show is accompanied by a catalogue presenting about 250 drawings: the collection is indeed coming of age! And it continues to grow, as evidenced in the selection brought together here, almost entirely acquired after the choice of drawings for the exhibition had been finalized. Research on these drawings is ongoing, and only some preliminary findings are presented at this point. \u0000The expansion of the collection is only possible because of the unflinching support of the Fund’s founders and of many other benefactors. {"title":"Berlin Furniture Drawings by Carl Wilhelm Marckwort (1798-1875)","authors":"Achim Stiegel","doi":"10.52476/trb.9683","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.52476/trb.9683","url":null,"abstract":"The Rijksmuseum recently acquired eight furniture designs, drawn by the cabinet-maker from Braunschweig, Carl Wilhelm Marckwort (1798-1875), while working as a journeyman in Berlin, in the years 1820-23. Apart from another group by Marckwort, no similar drawings made in Berlin during the first half of the nineteenth century survive, although they must once have been common. They were not regarded as works of art, and those that may have been retained in Berlin were lost during the Second World War. Marckwort took his drawings with him when he returned to Braunschweig in 1824, where they have until recently been kept by a succession of local cabinet-makers.\u0000Marckwort’s drawings present much information on current Berlin furniture types, and they document the high level of draughtsmanship attained by a talented craftsman working there. In Berlin, as in Vienna and indeed also in Braunschweig, much attention was given from the late eighteenth century onwards to providing drawing lessons for apprentices and journeymen. This was seen as an important step in an effort to improve the quality of manufactured goods. Marckwort’s manner of drawing, linear rather than free, exemplifies the workings of the new educational system. The Rijksmuseum conservators used our identification of the plants and animals as a basis for their rendered images of various possible original colour schemes for the frames that are presented here. The painting by Post must be understood in its historical context, as is the case for the frame and its motifs taken from nature. {"title":"Recognizing Artist and Subject: Bramine Hubrecht and her Sicilian Procession","authors":"Anna C. At the centre is one of her paintings – four veiled young girls entirely dressed in white in a church interior. This work is now in Museum Catharijneconvent. The painting was previously attributed to Isaac Israels (1865-1934) on the basis of two false signatures. New information has meant that it can now be identified as a work by the painter Bramine Hubrecht. One of her sketchbooks in the Rijksmuseum and a watercolour in the Pulchri Cabinet, a unique artists’ initiative in The Hague, helped in unravelling the story. These two works, which show exactly the same girls, can beattributed to Hubrecht with absolute certainty. New biographical information has reinforced this new attribution and also sheds light on the meaning of the subject. These ‘brides’ prove to be part of the Processione dei Misteri del Venerdì Santo,which is still held every year on the evening of Good Friday in Taormina, the little village in Sicily where Hubrecht lived at the beginning of the twentieth century. Wagenaar, Mieke Beumer","doi":"10.52476/trb.9736","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.52476/trb.9736","url":null,"abstract":"We do not know who trained Esaias Boursse (1631-1672) to be a painter, but we do know that he became a member of the Amsterdam Guild of St Luke around 1651. He certainly did not have a successful career because he joined the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in 1661. He travelled to Colombo, the capital of the island of Ceylon (Sri Lanka since 1972), captured six years earlier by the Portuguese, by way of Batavia (now Jakarta). In 1663 he was back in Amsterdam – remarkable, as the standard contract with the VOC was for five years. In financial straits again, he re-joined the VOC in 1671 and left for Asia. Shortly after leaving he died at sea. In 1996 an album containing 116 drawings came to light, most of them made by Boursse during his time in Ceylon; he made only a small number during his outward or return journeys to the Cape of Good Hope. The drawings are completely different from his earlier known oeuvre of genre paintings and prints with religious themes. The pages in his ‘Tijkenboeck’ provide a unique picture of what Boursse saw in and around Colombo.
