This protocol can be implemented over a synchronous bus local area network (LAN). CAST uses a simple algorithm by which each station can recognize its turn of access by counting either the number of data packets or the number of idle pulses sent from all preceding stations. The throughput versus transfer time performance of a CAST LAN is better than that of other LANs, and it can be verified by performance analysis. Other useful features are an integrated voice and data capability, a high-connection portability, and reliability. In particular, throughput and fairness parameters are examined. As far as fairness is concerned, a merit figure is proposed, and an evaluation procedure is presented. A general approach to cope with the above-mentioned aspects is discussed and, as a proposed solution, a MAC protocol, called adaptive cycle cell insertion (ACCI), is described. The architecture calls for a distributed implementation of the SMT CMT (station management connection management) for the concentrator. The main features include microcontroller-based physical connection management, configuration management, and link error monitor for the back-end and front-end PHYs. Other features include a node-processor-based entity coordination management, ring management, MAC support, SMT frame transaction support, and link layer control. Communication, between the node processor and the peripheral microcontrollers is two-way serial for high-speed support of concentrator management transactions between the physical entities and the node processor. For both cases capacity and cut-off-rate are investigated and exact expressions for the basic system parameters are derived. Various types of FEC codes are considered. Systems employing repetition coding (diversity) or dual-k codes are examined as well as concatenated coding schemes with various outer RS codes. The system is called the TPON Bit Transport System (BTS). A bit-interleaved technique coupled with efficient control protocols facilitates the design of reliable, low-complexity, and low-power-consumption TPON hardware at both head-end and remote node. The BTS subsystem for the remote node has been successfully integrated in two ASIC (application-specific integrated circuit) devices and the BTS head-end supporting up to 128 nodes is contained within a compact plug-in module. The pyramid DPCM is relatively simple, feasible, and allows a processing interval between samples that is longer than the sampling interval. Precise formulation within an optimization framework of the access control problem is developed. For the general problem of a multiplexer supporting traffic with different bandwidth requirements, a mixed integer programming formulation is developed and an efficient solution procedure is identified. Integrated AOM&P support has to be defined with a top-down approach, while the implementation of the integration plan should follow a bottom-up approach. The telecommunication management network (TMN) architecture could provide for a suitable support to this evolution towards the final target, allowing the progressive interconnection of existing and new operations support systems (OSS). The Italian Operating Telephone Company, SIP, has adopted these concepts in defining plans and programs for evolving from the present situation-where a number of dedicated OSS are mechanizing several AOM&P functions-towards an integrated OSS environment to provide for more flexibility, higher quality, and reduced company costs. Since in this type of excitation signal the positions of the pulses are known, a codebook can be easily obtained by applying the vector quantization design technique directly to a training sequence of the multipulse excitation generated by a conventional multipulse linear prediction (MPE-LPC) speech coder with restrictions on the pulse positions.
