In the measurements, three video QoS (Quality of Service) parameters, that is, the frame size, frame rate, and quantization scale change, then the double stimulus continuous quality scale method is used to obtain the subjective test scores from the subjects. This report provides the experimental results and discusses on the correlation between the QoS parameters and the user assessment, which might be useful for user-adaptive QoS control in video streaming service.","PeriodicalId":405589,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Multimedia and Expo, 2001. Usually watermark is used as a way for hiding information on digital media. The watermarked information may be used to allow copyright protection or user and media identification. In our application the watermark must be, obviously, imperceptible to the users to mantain the quality of the source, should be robust to standard TV and radio editing and its processing has to require a very low complexity. This last item is essential to allow a software real-time implementation of the insertion and detection of watermarks using only a minimum amount of the computation power of a modern PC. Simulation results obtained on a long set of subjective test prove the quality and the robustness of the proposed approach.","PeriodicalId":405589,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Multimedia and Expo, 2001. A comprehensive video retrieval system should be able to accommodate and utilize such various (complementary) description data in facilitating effective retrieval. In this paper, we present a hybrid approach by integrating a query-based (database) mechanism with content-based retrieval (CBR) functions. We describe the VideoMAP + architecture and its specific language mechanism (CAROL/ST with CBR) which provides an improved expressive power than what pure query-based or CBR methods currently offer. An experimental prototype is being developed using a commercial object-oriented toolkit on a PC platform.","PeriodicalId":405589,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Multimedia and Expo, 2001. Most systems make very strong assumptions in modeling users’ query concepts. However, since the information need of users can be very diverse, these assumptions may not always hold and hence can lead to poor search results. For instance, if a system assumes that the query-concept is convex but a user issues a disjunctive query, and vice versa, the search result cannot be satisfactory. In this study, we propose a method that can approximate more complex (non-convex and disjunctive) query concepts. Our method uses intelligent modeling and learning to increase query speed and accuracy. Empirical results show that our method converges consistently faster than some traditional approaches on different datasets.","PeriodicalId":405589,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Multimedia and Expo, 2001. Three types of methods known from video processing literature were evaluated. An unprecedented amount of 8 hours for 6 different videos were used to evaluate the methods under the same circumstances so that an unbiased judgement is presented. As Logical Story Units cannot be defined with full certainty, a new evaluation method is introduced measuring the economic impact of results. Experiments show reasonable performance for all methods. Time constrained clustering is the most effective and consistent method.","PeriodicalId":405589,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Multimedia and Expo, 2001. The techniques either are errorprone due to the inaccuracy of the hummed query or force the users to hum according to a metronome. This paper presents a new slope-based query-by-humming technique, in which the retrieval is robust to the inaccuracy in query and the use of metronome is eliminated. We use melody curve to represent the melodies of the original songs and the hummed query. And curve features: slope ranges and spans and note changes are extracted from the melody curves. Music retrieval is done by matching the curve features of query with those of the original musical songs. Results have shown the features and the algorithms are robust to humming inaccuracy.","PeriodicalId":405589,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Multimedia and Expo, 2001. In fact, it is quite common to use three-dimensional image and the realistic 3D-sound. Most of leading information systems aim at making the best use of such three-dimensional media. But, the three-dimensional media is not always more powerful than the other media. In this paper, it is addressed that each dimensional media has its own strength and the suitable dimension of the media must be used for effective information output. To exemplify it, two systems with the seamless cooperation of multi-dimensional image and sound have been developed and evaluated. Finally the findings are applied to the design environment for the car exterior designer.","PeriodicalId":405589,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Multimedia and Expo, 2001.
