Se proyectó como un edificio con un crecimiento programado en el cual la edificación se situaría en torno a un patio de máquinas. Esta disposición exocéntrica hizo que su tipología edificatoria fuese única dentro de la arquitectura de la prensa nacional. Fuertemente influenciado por la arquitectura alemana contemporánea, fue un ejemplo adelantado del uso de la modulación como mecanismo proyectual y, junto con los diarios Pueblo y Arriba, un representante de la segunda modernidad española. El periódico cerró en 1989 y un año más tarde fue reemplazado por una construcción con nulo valor arquitectónico, siguiendo el destino de la mayoría de los edificios de la prensa. Lo que ocurre con estos edificios cuando se vacían de contenido es una cuestión aún sin resolver.AbstractThe building of the newspaper Ya, designed by Víctor López Morales in 1955, was an innovation in the architecture of the press in Spain. It was designed as a building with a programmed growth in which the building would be located around a machine yard. This exocentric arrangement made its building typology as unique in the architecture of the national press. Strongly influenced by contemporary German architecture, it was an early example of the use of modulation as a project mechanism and, together with the newspapers Pueblo and Arriba, a representative of the second Spanish modernity. The newspaper closed in 1989 and a year later the original building was replaced by a new one with no architectural value, following the fate of most of the buildings of the press. What happens to these buildings when they are emptied of content is an issue still unsolved.","PeriodicalId":40549,"journal":{"name":"Cuaderno de Notas","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2019-07-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42681238","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Se propone así un doble ejercicio de análisis. En la aproximación propuesta se señalarán, en primer lugar, posibles intervenciones que a través de los objetos puedan entenderse como próximas al ready-made, junto a un estudio de posibles variantes en su utilización como recurso. En segunda instancia, se estudian distintos casos en los que el objeto deja de ser un elemento como tal dentro de la naturaleza de la obra para devenir, sin ambages, en su propio motivo formal: arquitectura como ready-made. Esta operativa condujo al estudio, como se analiza en el último apartado, a determinadas paradojas conceptuales.AbstractThis text aims to analyse a specific aspect of the idea of “convention” in the work of Robert Venturi: the inclusion of the everyday object into architecture, in the context of Pop culture, which would seem to re-establish the dialectics of the Duchampian ready-made, albeit transformed. A dual analysis exercise is undertaken. The proposed approach points at, firstly, those interventions by means of objects that may be understood as pertaining to the ready-made, together with a study of possible variants of use of said objects as a resource. In the second instance, different cases are studied in which the item ceases to be distinguishable element within the work, to become a full-blown formal motive on its own: ready-made architecture. This methodology led to the study, as analysed in the last section, of obvious conceptual paradoxes.","PeriodicalId":40549,"journal":{"name":"Cuaderno de Notas","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2019-07-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46634269","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A partir de 1999, aparece un cierto impulso para entender la arquitectura desde un punto de vista global, a la luz de la teoría postcolonial. Sibel Bozdoğan hace la siguiente proposición: escribir una ‘historia entrelazada/entretejida,’ que demuestre que el canon occidental y la producción cultural de las sociedades aparte de Europe y los Estados Unidos no son independientes, ni que ésta última fuera a sustituir a aquella. La bibliografía resultante no ha sabido mostrar las sutiles instancias de intercambios entre culturas y de valores universales compartidos, olvidándose de revisar el concepto de universalismo. Este trabajo de investigación propone una revisión crítica de las historias globales de la arquitectura publicadas entre 1999 y 2014, así como de los debates académicos más recientes para entender qué queda por hacer hoy. Aunque puede ser que ‘global,’ como categoría haya perdido su capacidad crítica para comprender el presente, la historiografía de lo global en arquitectura aún tiene que escribirse.AbstractThe writing of architectural history shifted with the turn of the century. By 1999, there is an urge to understand architecture from a global perspective, under the lens of postcolonial theories. Sibel Bozdoğan set the task: to write an ‘intertwined history,’ which shows that the western canon and the cultural production of societies outside of Europe and North America are not separate and independent, nor is the latter to replace the former. Subsequent literature failed to look into subtle instances of cross-cultural exchanges and universally shared values, thus neglecting to revise the notion of universalism. This paper analyses the resulting literature on global architecture published between 1999 and 2014, and more recent scholarly discussions to understand what remains for historians to do today. Though it may be that ‘global’ has lost its criticality as category to comprehend the present, the historiography of global architecture is yet to be written.","PeriodicalId":40549,"journal":{"name":"Cuaderno de Notas","volume":"15 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2019-07-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67732385","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Este problema, de hecho, cuenta ya con una larga trayectoria que nos lleva hasta el punto en que Frederick Law Olmsted, uno de los creadores de Central Park, concibió la profesión. Partiendo de las intuiciones mostradas en publicaciones recientes, este artículo trata las dificultades que tuvo la American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), la primera organización oficial de paisajistas, para definir la arquitectura del paisaje como una profesión moderna. Para explorar esta idea se han consultado los documentos originales que la ASLA produjo desde el momento de su fundación hasta la mitad del siglo XX, almacenados en uno de los archivos históricos de la Biblioteca del Congreso de Estados Unidos y que, hasta el momento, no han sido publicados en su mayor parte. Una lectura crítica de estos documentos muestra los conflictos y complicaciones que tuvo la sociedad para definir un ámbito profesional y un perfil concreto de cara al público.AbstractIn current times, several landscape theorists have noticed a persistent crisis in the professional identity of landscape architecture. Actually, this problem has a long history that can be traced back to when Frederick Law Olmsted, one of the creators of New York’s Central Park, conceived the profession. Following some of the ideas that recent publications have hinted at, in this paper we look into the difficulties that the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), the first official organization of its kind, went through during the early attempts to define landscape architecture as a modern profession. To do this, we have consulted the original documents that the ASLA produced between its foundation and the middle of the 20th century. These are currently stored in the Library of Congress of the United States and some of them remain unpublished up until now. A critical reading of these records highlights the conflicts and complications in defining the field of landscape architecture and building a specific public profile.","PeriodicalId":40549,"journal":{"name":"Cuaderno de Notas","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2019-07-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67733299","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

La construcción vernácula ha proporcionado respuestas diversas a estos condicionantes pero también estos banqueos surgidos de las necesidades del cultivo han inspirado soluciones más recientes, que buscan adaptarse a la pendiente sin necesidad de grandes explanaciones. Este fue el caso de diversas arquitecturas que tras la Guerra Civil plantearon una modernidad que, mirando a la escena internacional, no olvidaba la tradición vernácula en un intento de sentar bases propias. El recinto ferial de la Casa de Campo –erigido en tiempos de escasez en la accidentada periferia madrileña- propició en varios de sus solares el banqueo del terreno para hacer posible el tránsito expositivo, trasladando a un ámbito periurbano elementos más propios de un entorno agrario. Este artículo se propone explorar las soluciones aportadas por el pabellón de los Hexágonos (1958-1959), el pabellón del Ministerio de la Vivienda (1959) y el pabellón de las Bancadas (1962-1965) para acoger un uso expositivo y abordar a la vez el problema de la adaptación a la pendiente mediante construcciones pétreas y estereotómicas ligadas al terreno y entramados ligeros y tectónicos ligados a la cubierta.AbstractSpain’s abrupt topography has fostered the stepped arrangement of many agrarian estates, articulating landscapes where retaining walls shape the ground while they determine the way the site is inhabited. Vernacular construction has provided different solutions to these problems, but terraced slopes have also inspired more recent designs that adapt to the contours of the site avoiding large excavations. That was the case of some of the architecture that emerged after the Spanish Civil War, which looked up at the tenets of international modernism, while resorting to vernacular traditions in order to find its own profile. The Casa de Campo fair grounds, raised on the verge of Madrid in a time of scarcity, provided several sites where terraces were needed to allocate an exhibition program, transferring a characteristic feature of the rural landscape onto the urban periphery. This paper explores the different ways in which the Hexagon pavilion (1958-1959), the Ministerio de la Vivienda pavilion (1959) and the Bancadas pavilion (1962-1965) hosted an exhibition program and adapted to the sloping terrain by means of petrous, stereotomic structures linked to the ground and light, tectonic frames linked to their roofs.","PeriodicalId":40549,"journal":{"name":"Cuaderno de Notas","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2019-07-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46689319","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

El artífice de este número fue el arquitecto y crítico Peter Buchanan, que desempeñaba en ese momento el cargo de ‘deputy editor’ de la prestigiosa revista. Además de este fascículo monográfico, Buchanan publicó en Architectural Review, a lo largo de la década, varios artículos de interés sobre la arquitectura española, que contribuyeron a situarla en la palestra arquitectónica internacional. Responsible for that issue was the architect and critic Peter Buchanan, then deputy director of the prestigious journal. In addition to it, throughout the 1980s Buchanan published several other articles about Spanish architecture in Architectural Review, thereby contributing to position it in the international scene. Sin embargo, y pese a que parte de ellas nacieron con esa voluntad de ruptura, existen y han existido múltiples conexiones entre tradición y modernidad, entre las que puede desatacarse el valor asignado a determinadas tradiciones vernáculas por sucesivas generaciones de arquitectos. Entre estas últimas, han destacado históricamente las tradiciones mediterráneas, que se convertirían en fuente de modelos para algunas de estas nuevas arquitecturas. Desde apreciaciones puramente formales, desligadas de los condicionantes culturales y funcionales que las habían ido configurando generación tras generación, se llegó a menudo a una valoración más amplia de las mismas y, partiendo de ésta, surgirían importantes debates que contribuirían de forma significativa a la evolución de la arquitectura moderna. AbstractThe architectural vanguards are often understood as movements opposing tradition. Nevertheless, and in spite of part of them having been born under such a will, multiple links between tradition and modernity exist and have existed. Among them, the way successive generations of architects have valued particular vernacular traditions stands out, especially those belonging to the Mediterranean regions. These last traditions would historically become a source of references for some of those new architectural trends. From purely formal appreciations, disconnected from the cultural and functional conditioning factors which shaped them generation after generation, often a wider understanding of them was reached. From that starting point important debates would come up and they would significantly contribute to the evolution of modern architecture.","PeriodicalId":40549,"journal":{"name":"Cuaderno de Notas","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2019-07-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48560920","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Además del sentido moderno de sus funciones, muchas resultaron de procesos de gestión de la construcción novedosos, pues su realización implicó la importación de estructuras complejas, de grandes dimensiones, con gran variedad de materiales. Más que en sus aspectos técnico-constructivos, este artículo busca hacer énfasis en la incorporación de los mecanismos de gestión que estos implicaron. Los proyectos de los arquitectos Theodore De Lemos y August Cordes, construidos por el ingeniero mexicano Gonzalo Garita, con estructuras de acero de la empresa de Edward y Foster Milliken, también con sede en Nueva York, fueron resultado del desarrollo de un mercado en el cual aparecieron los primeros empresarios de la construcción modernos del país. El trabajo se centra en la realización en la Ciudad de México de los edificios para la Casa Boker y para la Mutual Insurance Company of New York en el contexto de las obras realizadas por los proyectistas y contratistas en Manhattan, Ciudad del Cabo o Johannesburgo. De ese modo se entiende una gestión moderna de proyectos y obras que se adelantaba a la globalización de nuestros días.AbstractIt is known that during the first decade of the twentieth century in Mexico was built a large number of buildings, both public and private, which meant the dissemination of modern building materials and techniques.
