Fault tolerance is achieved through consistent replication of both client and server objects. Objects may be actively or passively replicated, and replicated objects of both types may coexist. Nested operations involving both active and passive objects are accommodated. Suppression of duplicate operations is ensured by unique message and operation identifiers. Continued operation is allowed in all components of a partitioned network. State transfer mechanisms and fulfilment operations restore the consistency of the states of the replicas when communication is re-established and the components remerge.","PeriodicalId":404872,"journal":{"name":"Distributed Syst. The two-phase commit propagation rules within a distributed transaction tree are similar in the X/Open, ISO and OMG models. Building an OTS on an OSI TP protocol machine is possible because the two specifications are somewhat complementary. OTS defines a set of external interfaces without specific internal protocol machine, while OSI TP specifies an internal protocol machine without any application programming interface. Given these observations, and having already implemented an X/Open two-phase commit transaction toolkit based on an OSI TP protocol machine, we analyse the feasibility of using this implementation as a transaction service provider for OMG interfaces. Based on the favourable result of this feasibility study, we are implementing an OTS compliant system, which, by initiating the extensibility and openness strengths of OSI TP, is able to provide interoperability between X/Open DTP and OMG OTS models.","PeriodicalId":404872,"journal":{"name":"Distributed Syst. This paper presents GEM - an interpreted generalized event monitoring language. It allows high-level, abstract events to be specified in terms of combinations of lower-level events from different nodes in a loosely coupled distributed system. Event monitoring components can thus be distributed within the system to perform filtering, correlation and notification of events close to where they occur and thus reduce network traffic. GEM is a declarative rule-based language in which the notion of real time has been closely integrated and various temporal constraints can be specified for event composition. The paper discusses the effect of communication delays on composite event detection and presents a tree-based solution for dealing with out-of-order event arrivals at event monitors.","PeriodicalId":404872,"journal":{"name":"Distributed Syst. We propose a total ordering protocol based on a dynamic token-passing scheme which determines the next token holder dynamically, not in predetermined order. The proposed protocol provides fast stability time, uses a small buffer, and distributes evenly the load of ordering messages to accomplish a total message ordering. We present simulation results to illustrate that the performance of the proposed protocol is superior to that of existing token-based total ordering protocols.","PeriodicalId":404872,"journal":{"name":"Distributed Syst. The pinwheel protocols are designed for applications characterized by a uniform message arrival pattern. The on-demand protocol is designed for non-uniform, bursty message arrivals. The protocols tolerate omission/performance communication failures and crash/performance process failures. Simulation studies for the pinwheel protocols demonstrate that they have superior performance over other well known atomic broadcast protocols, for uniform message arrival rates. We also report measurements taken on prototype implementations, that show very good results and a substantial performance advantage of the on-demand protocol for non-uniform and intermediate message arrival patterns.","PeriodicalId":404872,"journal":{"name":"Distributed Syst. However, few systems in existence today, whether they be large scale pilots or small scale test-beds in research laboratories, offer a fully integrated and flexible environment where multimedia applications can maximally exploit the quality of service (QoS) capabilities of supporting networks and end-systems. In this paper we describe the implementation of an adaptive transport system that incorporates a QoS oriented API and a range of mechanisms to assist applications in exploiting QoS and adapting to fluctuations in QoS. The system, which is an instantiation of the Lancaster QoS Architecture, is implemented in a multi ATM switch network environment with Linux based PC end systems and continuous media file servers. A performance evaluation of the system configured to support video-on-demand application scenario is presented and discussed. Emphasis is placed on novel features of the system and on their integration into a complete prototype. The most prominent novelty of our design is a `distributed QoS adaptation' scheme which allows applications to delegate to the system responsibility for augmenting and reducing the perceptual quality of video and audio flows when resource availability increases or decreases.","PeriodicalId":404872,"journal":{"name":"Distributed Syst. However, the burstiness of typical variable bit rate traffic streams makes it difficult to provide the QoS guarantees that the network's clients require and simultaneously make efficient use of network resources. In this paper, we investigate the impact that smoothing traffic at the network's edge has on both the client's QoS and on the network's utilization. Considering the case of end-to-end deterministic QoS guarantees, we explore the analytical foundations of smoothing and identify the scenarios in which smoothing is beneficial to the network or its clients. Moreover, we quantify the potential benefits of smoothing with a set of experiments based on traces of MPEG-compressed video in heterogeneous multi-hop networking environments.","PeriodicalId":404872,"journal":{"name":"Distributed Syst. Generic modelling and monitoring techniques are inevitable for such a model-based approach. The planning of user-requested QoS is done by the evaluation of automatically created models out of a library of model components, while achieved QoS is checked using monitoring. In this paper we experiment with the generic modelling and monitoring of a multimedia service in an open distributed processing environment. We both use simulation and numerical techniques to evaluate the models. In this particular case study, end-user requested QoS is specified by throughput, mean end-to-end delay and delay-jitter.","PeriodicalId":404872,"journal":{"name":"Distributed Syst. The management of these services has to take into account the available resources and the user's wishes concerning the desired quality and costs. Based on our experience with the construction of a News-on-Demand prototype, we present in this paper a few simple principles applying to QoS management for distributed multimedia applications. We discuss in particular ways in which an application can adapt to reduced network performance related to throughput, loss, delay or jitter, and we consider the situation where the configuration of the distributed application can be selected dynamically and be revised during the running of the application. We also comment on the handling of QoS in a layered system architecture and the use of performance models for QoS management.","PeriodicalId":404872,"journal":{"name":"Distributed Syst.
