This study seeks to understand the perception of local people about Rohingya refugees regarding the impacts of refugees on the host community from both environmental and social perspectives. The study finds that in the initial period of the refugee influx, local people showed their sympathy and provided support to help these forced migrants. However, the perception of local people started to change over time as they believed that because of the massive influx of refugees, the host environment lost a thousand acres of forest, more than half of the total hill lands, and vast biodiversity. Moreover, due to the establishment of refugee camps, the host communities face several social problems like theft, robbery, hijacking, teasing, violence, smuggling, etc. The long presence of refugees in an area with scarce resources brings social tensions and competition that may turn into social conflict if there is a lack of proper surveillance and policies from respective authorities.\u0000Social Science Review, Vol. 39(3), Dec 2022 Page 1-16

Written, based on secondary resources available in books, journal articles, and online sources, it argues that conflictsensitive approaches to development pay attention to contextual realities to avoid any intentional and unintentional ‘harm’ that a context may face due to insensitive developmental intervention. On the Arial Beel case, it found that a localised, violent resistance movement developed against the decision to construct a modern airport due to inadequate attention to local realities and inappropriate pre-project development assessment processes. The government had to backtrack the project. However, at the latter stage, the decision-makers learned to respect local sensitivities while looking for alternative sites for an airport project. It suggests an insensitive development project that becomes unwanted too to locals could influence policymakers to learn about contextual sensitivities and respect the pulse of people on the ground.\u0000Social Science Review, Vol. 39(2), June 2022 [Special Issue] Page 19-37

Focusing on original in-depth ethnographic fieldwork in Barind, the paper concerns Oraons’ identity that how it is structured by their present economic condition as well as by the processes that have promoted internal Oraon diversity. Despite this concern, the paper depicts the processes of Oraons’ identity formation as minority group or adibashis or indigenous people. The Oraons, by claiming their identity rights as adibashis, strategically unite with other adibashi group from both Bangladesh and abroad, politically respond to global indigeneity. Analysing available research on different databases this study identifies general trends in Bangladesh’s private television and its news media research which shows that in addition to low volume of research, most of the study focused on some common aspects resulting in many significant areas unexamined. Finally, this article suggests new agendas in news media research with particular focus on the role of the state, ownership and news labour—three key stakeholders of the private television news media. This article used the power relation approach of Foucault, Althusser, and Mills, Barth’s idea of ethnicity and boundary maintenance, primordial and instrumentalist approaches to ethnicity, and primordial and socia-constructionist approaches to identity. The politics of identity formation and movements of Bangalee, Chakma, and Tripura ethnic communities are associated with multidimensional issues. Some of these are - collectiveness, struggle for existence, ensuring rights, protecting traditions, and securing land and natural resources of the hills. The study used qualitative data collection methods such as observation and participation, key informant interviews, life history, case studies, and narratives. Data analysis followed the qualitative technique by interpreting various aspects or layers of meaning and relationships among ethnic communities. The findings further show that Chakma and Tripura communities bear a nationalist and political ideology through the term Jumma, while Bangalees have a reconstructed image of the hill Bangalee. This article, thus, critically examines the politics of identity formation in CHTs, focusing on inter-ethnic relations of power and political practices.\u0000Social Science Review, Vol. 39(2), June 2022 [Special Issue] Page 1-17

Therefore, this article discusses the historical context within which post-independence Sufi/Pir-centred political parties emerged, their interaction with other parties, and their electoral performance. It also touches upon some basic issues relating to Pir-cum political leaders: once a Pir becomes a politician, does his previous relationship with his murids (disciple) remain intact? This paper concludes that instead of posing any meaningful challenge to the political regimes, Pir-led parties have developed a tendency to maximise their political opportunities by reaching various kinds of agreements with dominant political parties.\u0000Social Science Review, Vol. 39(2), June 2022 [Special Issue] Page 59-78

The term Disaster Management has also been introduced in Bangladesh in the contemporary period. However, Bangladesh is observing the lack of good governance being an obstacle to disaster management. Without ensuring good governance the rise of the death toll due to natural as well as human-induced disasters such as floods, cyclones, river erosion, drought, fire incidents, launch accidents, or building collapse could not be prevented. This study has particularly focused on revealing the relation of landslides to the eight significant characteristics of good governance. The researchers have collected both the primary and the secondary data and have adopted a qualitative method for analysing the data retrieved from Chattogram metropolitan area (previously known as Chittagong) during the research. This study has tried to establish the argument that, lack of the characteristics of good governance including transparency, accountability, rules of law, participation, responsiveness, consensus, inclusiveness, efficiency, and effectiveness is responsible for occurring disasters like landslides. Thus, this study is expected to open a new edge in academic and development research. While most of those studies focus on mac ro-economic perspective and are based on the western and developed economies, this study aims to investigate the impact of the pandemic on the money market of a developing economy (e.g., Bangladesh), the series of steps undertaken by the policy makers of the country and the consequences of those interventions on the liquidity of the money market based on the data from July 2018 to June 2021. Our analysis shows that the central bank of the country, Bangladesh Bank, without any delay implemented an expansionary monetary policy to ease the financial stress caused by the pandemic. We identified the policies adopted by the authorities included injecting liquidity, reducing interest rates, easing inflows of inward remittance, reducing CRR requirements, increasing Repo facilities at lower rates, reducing Annual Development Programme (ADP) implementation, borrowing from foreign channels instead of domestic markets etc. We also discussed the consequences (e.g., the record Foreign Exchange Reserve, a huge inflow of BDT liquidity in the market etc.) of the series of those interventions and outline the theoretical implications drawing on the findings.\u0000Social Science Review, Vol. 39(1), June 2022 Page 179-198

This study aims to examine the effect of COVID-19 on mental health in children with Communication Disorders in Bangladesh. Data were collected over the phone among 210 parents from urban and rural areas having a child with Communication Disorders. The child’s general socio- demographic information and clinical characteristics were reported through a bivariate test, while the risk factors associated with developing anxiety were measured using Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-6) scales. The result shows that children aged 11-15 suffer from severe anxiety (28.6%), and children who do not possess any language level 20(9.5%) have severe anxiety. Similarly, among children from families with Covid-19 positivity, 42(20.0%) of them have a severe level of anxiety. Therefore, counseling services should be provided to the families of COVID-19 positivity.
