The efficacy of combining five Trichoderma species and cattle dung in the management of aflatoxin-producing Aspergillus flavus under laboratory and field conditions was evaluated. Trichoderma asperellum, T. hamatum, T. viride, T. harzianum and T. pseudokoningii were bioassayed against A. flavus in vitro, while they were applied in combination with cattle dung in the field experiment. A randomized complete block design was used for field treatments with four replications. Trichoderma containing 2.3×108 cfu/gr was applied as seed treatment, while soil application was done using 2.5 kg/ha of sorghum grains as carrier and 5 t/ha cattle dung. Aflatoxin concentration was quantified using high-performance thin-layer chromatography. There was no significant difference among the treatments in the laboratory experiment. However, T. harzianum was the most effective with 72.3% mycelial inhibition of A. flavus. Seed treatment with combination of T. harzianum and cattle dung was most effective in reducing A. flavus soil population to 1.1×103 cfu/gr, while the combination of T. hamatum and cattle dung produced the highest pod yield of 2.7 t/ha, which was significantly higher than carbendazim fungicide. Therefore, integrated approach is recommended in managing aflatoxin contamination in pre-harvest groundnut.","PeriodicalId":402006,"journal":{"name":"Agrivita : Journal of Agricultural Science","volume":"604 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116367945","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nitrogen appears to have a positive effect on flaxseed growth and production. In an experiment conducted in two consecutive years in Greece, it has been studied how three combinations of urea fertilization affect flaxseed cultivation (cv. ‘Everest’). More specifically, the experimental treatments with urea fertilizers were represented as follows: only urea; urea with urease inhibitor; and urea with urease inhibitor and nitrates inhibitors. The value of root mass ranged from 0.780 to 1.182 mg/cm3 in the first year and from 0.872 to 1.267 mg/cm3 in the second year. The maximum value of plant height was 69.25 in urea with double inhibitors. Leaf Area Index (LAI) was double in fertilized plots compare to unfertilized. Oil content was significantly affected by year and noticed mostly 1% among treatments. Oil yield was affected by fertilizers and the maximum value was 513.96 kg/ha. A positive significant correlation coefficient was observed between oil yield and LAI (r=0.8699). A positive correlation was noticed between seed yield and NUE (r=0.6881). The most beneficial effects were mentioned under urea with UI and NI inhibitors.","PeriodicalId":402006,"journal":{"name":"Agrivita : Journal of Agricultural Science","volume":"241 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120850029","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is crucial to explore the drought tolerant rice varieties and improve their quality for sustainable production for droughtprone environments. The aim of this study was to know the ability of selected landraces (Aapjhutta, Kartika, Aanadi and Jhapamansuli) and improved varieties (Khumal-8, Khumal-10, Khumal-11 and Chainung-242) of rice to tolerate water-deficit stress in Nepal. The rice plants were grown in polyethylene pots. The pots were watered for the first two days of seedling transplantation and then watering was stopped. Survival and survival probability of seedlings were calculated. In addition, the concentration of an osmolyte (proline) was estimated after complete death of the plants in each variety. Two rice varieties, Jhapamansuli and Aapjhutta showed the highest seedling survival under water-deficit stress than the improved and other rice varieties. Results indicated that these two varieties have the ability to survive better than others under the stress by accumulating a high amount of proline as a compatible solute. Thus, these varieties can be preserved and utilized for breeding activities to develop drought tolerant and high yielding varieties.","PeriodicalId":402006,"journal":{"name":"Agrivita : Journal of Agricultural Science","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130559003","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Variance due to general (GCA) and specific combining abilities (SCA) and their interaction with environment was found to be significant for most of studied traits. For all the studied traits but ASI (Anthesis-silking interval), HI (Harvest index) and starch content, additive gene action was highly important than non-additive gene action for their expression as reflected by Baker's ratio which was near to unity. CML439, R13-1-1 and Tarun83-1-3-2 were the best general combiner for starch, protein and oil, respectively. R13-1-17, CML439 and Tarun83-1-3-2 were good general combiner for maturity characters and harvest index while TSK 196 and TSK 197 were good general combiner for cob length, cob girth, number of grains/row and grain yield. DMR9047×R13-1-17 and POP31Q×Tarun83-1-3-2 showed desirable heterosis and SCA effect for maturity characters. Regarding to SCA and heterosis, the prominent hybrids for grain yield were TSK197×R13-1-10, TSK194×POP31Q, DMR9047×POP31Q and R13-1-1×DMR9047. SCA established stronger relationship with per se performance of grain yield and quality traits than mid-parent (MPH) and best-parent heterosis (BPH), reflecting that an improvement in selection of SCA will results in an indirect improvement of MPH and BPH of hybrids.","PeriodicalId":402006,"journal":{"name":"Agrivita : Journal of Agricultural Science","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-03-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123528303","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The research was to evaluate the response of several barnyardgrass biotypes from Greece to profoxydim and evaluate the role of different rates and growth stages on the overall effectiveness. Three experiments were conducted in 2018. The response of the several biotypes had high variability (20-100%), with the most susceptible biotypes originating from regions in which crop rotation is a common practice (Fthiotida). Moreover, dose-response experiments showed that the rate of profoxydim required to adequately control the resistant population G17 was 4-times higher than the maximum recommended dose. Concerning the phenology effect on profoxydim effectiveness, This study revealed a higher efficacy at the earlier growth stage BBCH 13 (15-50% higher than growth stages BBCH 22 and 30), probably it was due to the smaller size and the higher growth rate of the younger plants. Consequently, the significant effect of weed growth stage on the effectiveness of profoxydim implies that application of the herbicide at earlier growth stages could optimize herbicide use and result in a better control with the condition of avoidance crop injuries.","PeriodicalId":402006,"journal":{"name":"Agrivita : Journal of Agricultural Science","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-03-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132419583","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Pranic agriculture involves the projection of prana to seeds, soil and plants to enhance their growth. The objectives were to appraise the papaya by PA treatment and to study its effect on germination and growth characteristics during early seedling stages. Papaya seeds were exposed to PA treatment and grown under greenhouse conditions and seedling growth was evaluated from 30-day-old seedlings. Non-pranic treated seeds were referred to as the control group. For Pranic group, the mean germination days, plant length, shoot length, number of leaf, leaf length, leaf diameter and seedling vigor index I and II enhanced considerably and the results were significant (p < .05) when compared to control. Thus, the PA technique helps in enhancing the growth of papaya seedlings. PA treatment could be practiced by farmers to enhance papaya growth. Further studies are needed to compare the differences in their nutritional composition and also find out the mechanism for this improved growth in pranic group. By practicing PA technique, farmers would be benefitted to enhance their crop growth.","PeriodicalId":402006,"journal":{"name":"Agrivita : Journal of Agricultural Science","volume":"66 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-03-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125680153","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

(Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae), is an extraordinary strategy in IPM (Integrated Pest Management). This study was intended to evaluate the potency of people in collecting larvae and to determine the age structure of the beetle population. The study was conducted in Asahan Regency, North Sumatera Province. Adult men, adult women, adolescent girls, and adolescent boys collected beetles for 2 hours in each breeding site. Results showed that the beetle was more significant abundant in decomposed trunks at plots of immature and mature palms than at heaps of the empty fruit bunches namely 236, 221 and 93 individuals/2 hours. The population age-structure showed significantly predominant of 2nd and 3rd instars in all breeding sites, i.e. eggs, 1st instars, 2nd instars, and 3rd instars, pupae, adult males, and adult females were 2.02, 23.29, 21.39, 47.06, 3.17, 0.86, and 2.21%, respectively. Adult men, adult women, and adolescent boys had similar potency in collecting 3rd instar larvae while the least amount was collected by the adolescent girls viz. 70, 85, 60, and 38 larvae/2 hours, respectively. It is suggested that the study results support future efforts in the sustainable control of rhinoceros beetle through collecting larvae for commercial utilization.","PeriodicalId":402006,"journal":{"name":"Agrivita : Journal of Agricultural Science","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-02-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132960929","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The research was arranged according to a Factorial Random-Block Design consisting of two factors and three replications. The first factor was the dose of chicken compost (0 and 15 t/ha) and the second the dose of KCl fertilizer (0, 50, 100 and 150 kg/ha). The results showed that chicken compost stimulated the growth, yield, postharvest quality of sweet corn, respiration, and microbial activity of soil. KCl fertilizer increased SPAD values linearly and quadratically chlorophyll pigment, β-carotene, yield components, and yield. KCl fertilizer did not affect soil respiration, fungi, or bacteria populations. The use of chicken compost reduced the need for KCl fertilization by 25%. Therefore, the integration of organic and inorganic fertilizers are recommended to be applied by farmers in the tropics.","PeriodicalId":402006,"journal":{"name":"Agrivita : Journal of Agricultural Science","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-02-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130622484","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There is an urgent need to find an appropriate soil amendment fertilizer to minimize negative effect of saline soil on sugarcane growth. The objective of the research was to determine the effect of vermicompost and nitrogen on N, K and Na uptakes and growth of sugarcane grown in saline soil. The treatments consisted of three rates of vermicompost (equivalent to 0, 10, 20 t/ha) and three rates of nitrogen fertilizer (equivalent to 50, 75 and 100 kg N/ha). Nine combinations of treatments were arranged in randomized block design with four replicates. Sugarcane commercial variety of ‘Bululawang (BL)’ was planted for 4 months in soil with Electrical Conductivity (EC) of 4.12 dS/m. Results showed that interaction between vermicompost and nitrogen fertilizer rate increased N, K uptakes and growth of sugarcane in saline soil. Addition amount of vermicompost and nitrogen reduced soil EC and Na/K ratio uptake of sugarcane. In this study, addition of 20 t vermicompost together with 50 kg N/ha induced sugarcane production with the highest biomass during 4 month planted in saline soil.","PeriodicalId":402006,"journal":{"name":"Agrivita : Journal of Agricultural Science","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116630616","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study, after the 2014 eruption of Kelud volcano, aimed to evaluate: (a) soil physico-chemical fertility post eruption, (b) impact of organic inputs interacting with ash in infiltration pits on soil C and N underneath (1 st experiment), (c) biomass loss (decomposition) of local biomass ( Trema orientalis and Parasponia andersonii ) in a coffee agroforestry system (2 nd experiment). Measurements in the ash-affected (+Ash) Tulungrejo-village (Ngantang-Malang district) were contrasted with an area without recent ash deposits (-Ash) in Krisik (Gandusari-Wlingi district). The 1 st experiment (-Ash site) treatments did not lead to statistically significant influences on soil conditions just below the infiltration pits during 12 weeks of monitoring. The 2 nd experiment quantified rate of biomass loss from litterbags. In +Ash location, litter half-life time (t 50 ) was 19.5 weeks for coffee or Parasponia as single biomass source to 24 weeks for Coffee+Sengon+Durian. In -Ash location decomposition was slower, with t 50 of 24 weeks for Parasponia to 27 weeks for Coffee+Sengon+Durian biomass. Concentrations of soil NH 4 and NO 3 below the litterbags peaked between 4 to 8 weeks, with nitrification lagging behind on ammonium release.","PeriodicalId":402006,"journal":{"name":"Agrivita : Journal of Agricultural Science","volume":"83 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132277660","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
