A remarkable 53 per cent of all election spending on advertising was spent on digital platforms. With the next general election coming into view there are growing calls to reform political advertising and end deceptive campaign practices, particularly online. Just five years on from Cambridge Analytica, there is still concern that online political advertising can be manipulative, misleading and problematic for democracy. And yet, whilst people are familiar with stories of personality profiled ads and voter suppression activities, when we think about our own experience of political advertising on platforms such as Facebook, it’s rare to recall particularly concerning practices. This raises an important question: exactly how is political advertising being used in elections? To answer this question, we created a research team at the University of Sheffield composed of staff and students. Working together, we coded over 2,500 Facebook adverts placed by national political party accounts, party leaders and ‘satellite campaign’ groups – which are non-party groups promoting particular electoral outcomes – during the 2019 General We Coded 2,500 UK General Election Adverts – Here’s What We Learned","PeriodicalId":401121,"journal":{"name":"Political Insight","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131222339","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Prevent, part of the UK’s wider counter-terrorism strategy, aims to stop people being drawn into or supporting the extremist ideologies that underpin and justify terrorism. Led by Sir William Shawcross, the review put forward 34 recommendations to improve the delivery, impact and outcomes of Prevent. The review’s headline finding was that Prevent had lost its way in recent years, apparently because of being excessively focused on those vulnerable to extreme right-wing ideologies at the expense of those vulnerable to Islamist ideologies. Accordingly, the review recommended that Prevent be refocused. The Iraq War was ostensibly launched to remove the threat of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) posed by the dictatorial rule of Saddam Hussein. The invasion phase lasted little over a month, but the Iraq War dragged on for years, fundamentally changing the power balance in the Middle East and redefining US and UK foreign policy. The war had a huge impact on Iraq. The Iraqi death toll is so high it can only be estimated: the ‘Iraq Body Count’ project estimates that between 186,694 and 210,058 civilians died. The ‘Cost of War Project’ puts the figure at between 275,087 and 306,495 dead. The UK lost 179 military personnel in Iraq.
