To eliminate the risks associated with a central, trusted party, we propose a generic method to enforce k-anonymity of location data in a decentralized way, using a distributed secret sharing algorithm and the concept of location and time specific keys. We describe our method in the context of a system for privacy-friendly traffic flow analysis, in which participants report origin, destination, start and end time of their trips. In order to protect their privacy the accuracy of time and location information is reduced, until it applies to at least k distinct trips. No trusted, central party is required to determine how much the accuracy of each trip report must be reduced. The participants establish location and time specific keys via vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication at the beginning and end of their trips. They use these keys to encrypt trip reports with several levels of accuracy, and uploaded them to a central, untrusted database. The keys are published using a secret sharing algorithm that allows their reconstruction, once at least k shares of the same key have been uploaded. Consequently, trip reports become available automatically, after k vehicles have made “the same trip” (same origin, destination, start and end time) with respect to a certain accuracy level.","PeriodicalId":399816,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference (VNC)","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125404561","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on these techniques, this paper introduces a novel protocol called cooperation and network coding based MAC (CNCMAC) for vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs). It employs cooperative automatic repeat request (ARQ) and network coding techniques to enhance throughput. The CNC-MAC protocol works in two phases. In the first phase - cooperation - data is sent to relay nodes. The second phase - network coding - minimizes received packets. The performance of the CNC-MAC protocol is compared with cooperative ARQ-MAC, another common protocol in this domain. The simulation results indicate that CNC-MAC outperforms ARQ-MAC.","PeriodicalId":399816,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference (VNC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125634605","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In brief, we found unicast communication using MAC acknowledgement frames (ACKs) to be unsuitable for vehicular networks, because missing ACKs make protocol operations susceptible to pronounced head of line blocking effects. Worse, a transmit queue that is blocked by a missing ACK will delay messages for all protocols running on the same node that use the same access category. Other than in traditional networks, missing ACKs are especially prevalent in VANETs due to their high topology dynamics. Depending on the scenario, delays of messages could be shown to reach 200 ms and beyond - above the tolerable range of many VANET applications. Our findings are based on analytical calculations, measurements on hardware, as well as computer simulations; we conducted simulations both at small scale, for a baseline validation, and at a macroscopic level, to gauge the impact on a more complex protocol.","PeriodicalId":399816,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference (VNC)","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132291638","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It frees drivers from stressful driving task and offers comfortable car trip experience. It is also expected to contribute to energy savings. In platooning control systems, beacon messages have an important role. Each member vehicle controls its acceleration according to the information of the position, speed, and acceleration included in the beacons from 1) the leader vehicle and 2) its preceding vehicle. Since the position, speed, and acceleration of a vehicle can be observed by its direct follower vehicle using on-board sensors, the beacon for preceding vehicle is not so critical. In contrast, the beacon transmitted from the leader vehicle to the member vehicles cannot be replaced by on-board sensors and is the key factor that requires high reliability. However, radio communication from the leader to the member vehicles is vulnerable to radio jamming attacks. This paper proposes a radio and visible light communication (VLC) hybrid protocol to tackle RF jamming attacks. Simulation results show that the proposed hybrid protocol can avoid long end-to-end delay and achieve high message delivery ratio even under RF jamming attacks.","PeriodicalId":399816,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference (VNC)","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122978881","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A key challenge is the deterministic low-latency transport of Ethernet frames, as many safety-critical real-time applications in these domains have tight timing requirements. Time-sensitive networking (TSN) is an upcoming set of Ethernet standards, which (among other things) address these requirements by specifying new quality of service mechanisms in the form of different traffic shapers. In this paper, we consider TSN's time-aware and peristaltic shapers and evaluate whether these shapers are able to fulfill these strict timing requirements. We present a formal timing analysis, which is a key requirement for the adoption of Ethernet in safety-critical real-time systems, to derive worst-case latency bounds for each shaper. We use a realistic automotive Ethernet setup to compare these shapers to each other and against Ethernet following IEEE 802.1Q.","PeriodicalId":399816,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference (VNC)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127421474","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

PLC avoids a dedicated wire harness for communication in Li-ion battery packs and helps to reduce weight and production costs. Moreover, PLC enables higher data rates than currently used communication systems, such as the controller area network. The additional data rate is mainly assigned to safety purposes, since Li-ion batteries are potentially harmful for users and the environment. Thus, a fast communication system with low latency must be developed, which works reliably in an unusual environment. Despite the short distances between receiver and transmitter in a battery, the channel shows high attenuation and several resonances. A suitable frequency range must be found in order to ensure a reliable communication link. For this purpose, we analyzed the PLC channel inside a traction battery. We determined the coherence bandwidth and a similarity factor between positions in the battery pack. These results show that a center frequency of 500 MHz is appropriate. In order to verify this, we performed bit error rate (BER) simulations with an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system for different positions in the battery pack. The results suggest that the relation of energy per bit to spectral noise power density must be 9 dB to satisfy all system requirements.","PeriodicalId":399816,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference (VNC)","volume":"226 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122457151","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, potential of the scheme has not been analyzed in detail nor optimized yet. The application works by sharing vehicles' data through high frequency periodic beaconing which, due to channel congestion, might not work in highly dense scenarios. To address this issue, in this paper we propose a dynamic approach called Jerk Beaconing which exploits vehicle dynamics to share data only when needed. The results, compared to a commonly assumed 10 Hz beaconing, show huge benefits in term of network resource saving. Moreover, our approach outperforms static beaconing in terms of safety as well, as it is able to keep inter-vehicle distance closer to the desired gap even in highly demanding scenarios.","PeriodicalId":399816,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference (VNC)","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122124439","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
