Studies predict that these cities are threatened with drowning by 2070-2050. Intervention policies for the conservation of coastal cities are among the most important concerns for Europe and North Africa. The concept of Resilient cities is one of the recent ways to deal with natural disasters and climate change that could threaten cities in the future. The northern coastal cities are of great importance in Egyptian urbanization, Where the second capital of Egypt (Alexandria). Northern cities have about 12% of Egypt's population. These cities represent economic and social power as well as historical and humanitarian value. Despite these risks, there has been a trend towards urban expansion in the northern coastal region since the end of the last century. \u0000This paper aims at studying the impacts of climate change on Egyptian northern coastal zones and exploring the urban resilience to the effects of climate change. In this regard, the current paper discusses the concept of resilience and describes the city resilience framework. Then the research focuses on coastal cities and surveys coastal vulnerabilities to the risks of climate change.  The paper addresses climate change resilience strategies by exploring various techniques applied in three international case studies. Then it surveys Egypt's coastal zones vulnerabilities to the impacts of climate change and Egyptian adaptation and mitigation attempts to climate change risks.  Finally, the paper addresses challenges and opportunities of the resilience of Egyptian northern coastal zones to the impacts of climate change and suggests some recommendations.","PeriodicalId":39925,"journal":{"name":"Canadian Journal of Urban Research","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90269508","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nature is not an optional, but absolutely essential quality of modern urban life. Biophilic city is a city full of nature in many different forms, it should consider nature at all levels, it is a place that learns from nature and emulates natural systems, incorporates natural forms and images into its buildings and cityscapes, and design and plans with nature, the experiential evidence of the truth of Biophilia, and social, psychological and other benefits from direct and indirect exposure to nature. It's important for emotional health and well-being, and human needs it for planetary health as well. It is not optional but essential. Capital Cairo is one of the newest Egyptian cities; it builds national spirit, provides for long-term sustainable growth, and aims to solve various issues faced by Egypt through a new city. This vision plan explores a set of strategies to guide growth over the next 40 to 50 years. Consequently, it must be resilient and sustainable enough to adjust to future changes and needs. This paper aims to sketch out guidelines needed to shift toward biophilic cities in the Egyptian new cities, based on Beatley’ s biophilic cities framework. Moreover, it explores how we can apply them to make the capital Cairo more biophilic, resilient, and sustainable.","PeriodicalId":39925,"journal":{"name":"Canadian Journal of Urban Research","volume":"40 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85749176","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With many changes in climate and population growth, water resources have become inadequate compared to demand. Water management has become a major challenge for both government and the private sector to provide quantities of water with high quality at reasonable cost and rational rate of energy consumption. Water is a critical component of the urban system, that affects environmental and human health, and nurtures local economic development. Sustainable development revolves around how to harmonize the indicators of high water demand and good water management to ensure integrated and sustainable development. Through the use of ICT systems, cities seek to achieve a number of additional benefits in the management of the water sector, such as: Accuracy and speed in identifying problems and priorities related to the sector, ensuring that decisions and solutions are taken quickly and accurately, thus achieving continuity and sustainability in water management. The research aims to achieve the principles of smart cities by measuring some quantitative indicators on the cities of Dakahlia governorate to classify them into three levels that reflect the application of ICT in water resource management and its impact on urban development using various technological capabilities, and then propose some smart water management technologies to achieve the principles of smart cities.","PeriodicalId":39925,"journal":{"name":"Canadian Journal of Urban Research","volume":"95 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85323325","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Streetscape design plays a vital role in connecting and accessing communities’ resources. When designed as sustainable; streets help to develop communities in terms of environmental, social, and economic aspects. In addition, sustainable streets protect and enhance the city ’s character and aesthetics. This research aims to highlight the importance of sustainability approach when designing a street whether it is a new street or a transformation of an existing one in order to be great. This paper is based on exploring the relationship between the basic principles of streetscape design and the sustainability framework comprising of its regular aspects: environmental, social, and economic. The paper highlights the intersection between the two main factors: 1. Streetscape design, 2. Sustainability framework. The research proposes a matrix through its application on an international case study to reach the final matrix. The final proposed matrix will be applied on Al-Alfy’ street in Cairo as a local case study. As conclusion the paper provides a checklist that may help developing sustainable design solutions for designing great streets.","PeriodicalId":39925,"journal":{"name":"Canadian Journal of Urban Research","volume":"362 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76415390","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This stress is pronounced notably in the form of poor air quality, high density, traffic overcrowding, neighborhoods lacking basic facilities and services, increasing population and decreasing percentage of urban open green spaces. This research aims to reach for Egyptian Suitable Pocket Parks design guidelines which would help to mitigate the impacts of urban heat islands, promote the public health in the city and increase the green areas for more social interaction and user’s satisfaction that goes for a large environmental, social and economic benefits. The Study aims to answer the following two main questions: How is it possible to use pocket parks as a greenery method in a city with very limited resources to mitigate the impacts of Urban Heat Islands and promote the community’s quality of life? And what are the perfect design guidelines of pocket parks in the Egyptian case? The study implements the case study method through studying “Al Zawya Al Hamra” district which is one of the highest dense over populated districts in Cairo city.The key findings of this paper disclose a 3d model for a proposed pocket park in one of the district’s neighborhoods. Most of the interviewed residents in the action area context expressed their high satisfaction after watching the space model before and after designing the pocket park. With proper community participation through the whole design process, the proposed design framework of pocket parks in the Egyptian case was enhanced and refined.","PeriodicalId":39925,"journal":{"name":"Canadian Journal of Urban Research","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89107196","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
