There are many gaps in our knowledge of the optimal utilization of the techniques available to assess pain in a valid and reliable manner. Pain that is not treated may cause significant clinical complications in the newborn infant. An initial start was made in a previous study to design a novel Premature Infant Pain Profile with a substantial focus on physiological factors. In this study, the novel Artemis Premature Infant Pain Profile (APIPP) was retrospectively compared with the Premature Infant Pain Profile (PIPP) that is used in the NICU at The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, to evaluate the effectiveness and validity of the novel scale being proposed. The main objective of this research was to use a preliminary case study approach by using retrospective data that were assigned PIPP scores to compare the performance of the novel APIPP with the current standard for measuring pain. The experiment was performed with two surgical subjects' data retrospectively with the APIPP algorithm. We demonstrated this study using an environment known as Artemis, a clinical decision support system.","PeriodicalId":398710,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 27th International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems","volume":"734 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122938941","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Systems are required that provide provenance data capture and management as support for analyses. This paper presents a provenance enabled system that is used in the N4U project, which aims to provide detailed trace ability to support research analysis processes in the study of biomarkers for Alzheimer's disease. To facilitate the orchestration of complex, large-scale analyses in this project we have adapted CRISTAL, a workflow and provenance tracking solution. The use of CRISTAL has provided a rich environment for neuroscientists to track the evolution of both data and workflows in N4U.","PeriodicalId":398710,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 27th International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems","volume":"107 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124124136","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of this work is to propose a novel model-based measure for quality evaluation of image registration techniques in DCE-MRI. The proposed measure is based on a compartmental model of blood plasma and of the extra vascular extra cellular space (EES) for tumour tissue. Its suitability for evaluating image registration techniques has been indirectly verified by considering the results obtained, after each image registration technique, by a CAD segmentation system, developed in our previous work. In particular, it has been shown that the ranking obtained by means of the proposed quality assessment measure is in agreement with the ranking of the CAD segmentation systems, proving that our measure can correctly evaluate image registration techniques in the DCE-MRI context.","PeriodicalId":398710,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 27th International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126505049","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We studied the case of phase 1 clinical trials where the identity of participants is key in determining their eligibility to participate in a trial. Our objective is to use the experience from our study to present a list of parameters to help generate data sets that closely match their real-world counterparts. We also examine existing tools and address their limitations with a tool of our own. Through the development of our clinical trial protocol, we discovered a field selection that proved to be efficient to detect a participant's identity, which may be used by other researchers in their protocols.","PeriodicalId":398710,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 27th International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems","volume":"110 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127997263","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Currently, several methods for reducing dimensionality are developed, used and evaluated within the medical domain. While these methods perform well, the computational cost tends to increase with growing dimensionality. An alternative solution is random indexing, a technique commonly employed in text classification to reduce the dimensionality of large and sparse documents. This study aims to explore how the predictive performance of random forest is affected by dimensionality reduction through random indexing to predict adverse drug reactions (ADEs). Data are extracted from EHRs and the task is to predict whether or not a patient should be assigned an ADE related diagnosis code. Four different dimensionality settings are investigated and their sensitivity, specificity and area under ROC curve are reported for 14 data sets. The results show that for the investigated data sets, the predictive performance is not negatively affected by dimensionality reduction, however, the computational cost is significantly reduced. Therefore, this study concludes that applying random indexing on EHR data reduces the computational cost, while retaining the predictive performance.","PeriodicalId":398710,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 27th International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems","volume":"78 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131808586","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

On this basis, several software tools have been developed by different research groups worldwide to support physicians for example in measuring remnant liver volume, analyzing tumors, and planning resections. Several algorithms have been developed to perform these tasks. Most of the time, the segmentation of the liver is at the beginning of the processing chain. Therefore, a vast amount of CT-based liver segmentation algorithms have been developed. However, clinics slowly move from CT as the current gold standard for diagnosing liver diseases towards magnetic resonance imaging. In this work, we utilize a Probabilistic Active Shape Model with an MR specific preprocessing and appearance model to segment the liver in contrast enhanced MR images. Evaluation is based on 8 clinical datasets.","PeriodicalId":398710,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 27th International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123880680","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The adoption of the Cloud to host such services is a promising solution to address the increasing demand for computational power and also to deal with expected or unexpected computational peaks. This paper proposes a framework that allows the execution on the Cloud of the X1.V1 platform, which is a commercial product that supports a number of e-health services as well as the interoperability among different healthcare environments. This framework is meant to enable an easy and quick management of the Cloud resources allocated to the X1.V1 platform, in order to enhance the platform performances and optimize resources utilization. The design of the framework takes into account security aspects as well, because unauthorized accesses could lead to serious inefficiencies of the e-health services.","PeriodicalId":398710,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 27th International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123890078","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These issues lie at the intersection of Web search methodologies, ontology studies, lexicon studies, and natural language processing. The presented in the article entropy-based methodology is aimed at enhancing search techniques and diagnostics by capturing semantic properties of written texts. The range of possible applications ranges from forensic linguistics to psychological diagnostics and evaluation. The presented case study assumes that for texts written under atypical mental conditions, the level of relative text entropy may fall below a certain threshold and the distribution of entropy across the text may show unusual patterns, thus contributing to the semantic assessment of a subject's mental state. Further processing methods potentially contributing to psychological evaluation diagnosis and ontology-based search are discussed.","PeriodicalId":398710,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 27th International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123906303","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Addressing IT skills for healthcare workforce is seen as an important element of achieving greater social inclusion. Thus, in this paper we propose a framework for a social network based registry where the users (healthcare workforce), the institutions and the policy makers could, collaboratively shape the required IT skills and competences for each healthcare profession. At the same time, all knowledge created at the registry could be shared through the semantic web and linked with existing silos of knowledge.","PeriodicalId":398710,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 27th International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124342192","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
