North of Vernal, Utah, the Nugget contains sedimentary cycles consisting of three units: (I) red mudstone, (2) siltstone, and (3) sandstone. The thinly bedded facies of the Nugget is characterized by complete cycles (1-2-3) in which the redbeds of units I and 2 are dominant. The crossstratified facies consists of alternations (2-3), and the medium- to large-scale cross-stratified sandstone of unit 3 is so well developed that it gives the facies its name. The cycles formed during wet-dry fluctuations in the climate. Units I and 2 represent small lakes, inland sebkhas, and mudflats; unit 3 represents eolian dunes. During deposition of the Nugget the general climate became more arid, and eolian dune deposition dominated, broken only rarely by local ephemeral lakes during moist periods.","PeriodicalId":398645,"journal":{"name":"Utah Geology","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114428029","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

On North Horn Mountain the Blackhawk Formation ranges from 215 to 290 meters in thickness and consists of interbedded sandstone, shale, siltstone, carbonaceous shale, coal, and limestone. The lower half of the formation, which contains the economically important coal beds, was deposited predominantly in a shallow water , wave-modified delta system. The upper half of the unit was deposited in fluvial environments of meandering streams and floodplains. The source for the clastic sediments of the Blackhawk Formation was to the west. Potentially minable coal exists in the Hiawatha and Blind Canyon beds and possibly in the Bear Canyon bed. The thickest beds were measured in the southeastern part of the study area, with 5.3 meters of the Blind Canyon bed found in one measured section. These coals are high quality and have lateral continuity, but the thickness varies and scattered wants and splits are to be found. Coal reserves on North Horn Mountain are large and should become an important source of supply for local and regional markets.","PeriodicalId":398645,"journal":{"name":"Utah Geology","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124253765","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Petroliferous Lithosomes in the Moenkopi Formation, Southern Utah","authors":"R. Blakey","doi":"10.34191/ug-4-2_67","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.34191/ug-4-2_67","url":null,"abstract":"Recent stratigraphic studies of the Triassic Moenkopi Formation suggest the possibility of important petroleum potential within the unit in southeastern and central Utah. Potential reservoir rocks include shoreline sandstone in the Black Dragon Member, carbonates in the Sin bad Limestone Member, and delta-front and delta-slope sandstone in the Torrey Member. Significant tar sand deposits have been mapped in the Moenkopi Formation in the San Rafael Swell and Circle Cliffs, and small oil and gas fields produce from the Moenkopi at the Grassy Trail and Last Chance fields respectively. These occurrences plus the large areas of bleached, nonred Moenkopi indicate that large amounts of hydrocarbons have moved through the formation. The most favorable source rocks for the Moenkopi hydrocarbons were probably the thick, dark, Paleozoic and Lower Triassic rocks west of the Cordilleran Hingeline (Wasatch Line). Thick Jurassic rocks deposited west of the Ancient Ephraim Fault may also have been important source rocks. Future successful exploration in the Moenkopi will involve locating an area where reservoir rocks and favorable structure coincide. Previous exploration involving surface structure has been rather disappointing, but recent exploration in the Rocky Mountain Region has indicated that many existing oil fields occur along major lineaments and their intersections. Major linear features are located throughout the area of study and may provide the most promising areas for future exploration.","PeriodicalId":398645,"journal":{"name":"Utah Geology","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124912625","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Three proposed measures to control the lake level have been analyzed to determine their potential effect on the salinity of the lake brines. These measures are: develop additional evaporation areas adjacent to the lake; pump the lake brine to evaporation areas west of the lake; and open the Southern Pacific Railroad causeway. The first two measures will have a minimal effect on the salinity of the lake, but the third measure, opening the causeway, will greatly alter salinity.","PeriodicalId":398645,"journal":{"name":"Utah Geology","volume":"63 4","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120899283","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

About 500 stations were taken as part of a study of geothermal exploration techniques. The region of investigation includes portions of both Juab and Millard Counties and incorporates parts of the Desert, McDowell and Drum Mountains. A simple Bouguer gravity anomaly map was computed and two-dimensional geologic models were prepared for two east-west gravity profiles. The analysis of the gravity data, in conjunction with the known geology and the results from other geophysical studies, led to the following interpretations: 1) the indication of two buried intrusive bodies - one a north north westward-trending dike lying beneath the Baker Hot Springs and the eastern margin of the Fumarole Butte lava flows and another several miles southwest of Desert Mountain; 2) the delineation of previously ' unpublished Basin and Range faults and associated grabens; and 3) the existence of a basement flexure with postulated fractures that served as conduits for the upwelling magma to reach the surface at Fumarole Butte.","PeriodicalId":398645,"journal":{"name":"Utah Geology","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123790160","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recent detailed mapping of Brigham Group rocks in and near Walcott's type area has shown that these rocks are cut by the Box Elder thrust, a fault that has removed some 1,500-3,300 feet (450-1,000 m) of Precambrian Z rocks. It is now thought that Walcott's probable type section was above the Box Elder thrust and that Walcott's type Brigham can be correlated with essentially all of the Geertsen Canyon Quartzite, an Early Cambrian(?) unit whose type section is near Huntsville, Utah, 16 miles (25 km) southeast of Brigham City","PeriodicalId":398645,"journal":{"name":"Utah Geology","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127492912","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Analyses of the whole rock and a feldspar concentrate from it were run. The whole-rock determination gave an age of 412 ± 17 my and the feldspar concentrate 453 ± 17 my. The whole-rock determination would place the age in the uppermost Silurian; the feldspar concentrate determination would place the age as medial to uppermost Ordovician. Because the present monitoring methods have certain limitations, an alternate procedure was investigated to determine brine concentrations. By use of a refractometer, we found that the index of refraction of a concentrating or saturated brine has a high degree of correlation with its magnesium ion concentration.
