Abstract

An analysis of the many physical and chemical characteristics of the Great Salt Lake leads to the conclusion that any measure or measures to control either lake level or brine salinity will affect both. Three proposed measures to control the lake level have been analyzed to determine their potential effect on the salinity of the lake brines. These measures are: develop additional evaporation areas adjacent to the lake; pump the lake brine to evaporation areas west of the lake; and open the Southern Pacific Railroad causeway. The first two measures will have a minimal effect on the salinity of the lake, but the third measure, opening the causeway, will greatly alter salinity.
