Its purpose is not to explore econometric and statistical techniques but to offer advice on design and practical matters gleaned from a series of valuation exercises the author has been intimately involved with. These were largely Best-Worst Scaling (BWS) studies, but the implications hold true in many cases for traditional discrete choice experiments (DCEs) and ranking studies. The first two issues deal largely with the construction of the descriptive system (items). The third issue uses a within-subject DCE led by the author to introduce the worrying possibility that the quest for high statistical efficiency in discrete choice studies may have severe, unintended consequences. The need for quota, rather than representative, sampling is discussed as the fourth issue. Finally there is a discussion of the often used Case 2 type of BWS and how it relates to traditional “multiprofile” (choice between states) DCEs and Case 3 BWS. It hopes to correct misconceptions that continue to be propagated concerning the differences between the methods. The author offers advice on future studies and is encouraged by work funded by the EuroQoL Group.","PeriodicalId":396916,"journal":{"name":"Health Economics Evaluation Methods eJournal","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-07-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121716527","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We find that 10 additional hours of childcare per month, a 31 percent increase with respect to the sample average, increases the probability of developing depressive symptoms by 3.0 to 3.2 percentage points for grandmothers and by 5.4 to 5.9 percentage points for grandfathers. These results suggest that policies that substitute informal with formal childcare can improve the mental wellbeing of grandparents.","PeriodicalId":396916,"journal":{"name":"Health Economics Evaluation Methods eJournal","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-07-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132333097","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Over years, its progression has well-documented. This paper determines the incidence of HIV across globe on ages 15 to 49 from 1990 to 2012 and identifies the continents that HIV disease is mostly prevalent. Moreover, since its occurrence is inevitable, the paper projects the prevalence of global HIV cases in 2050. The percentage of people ages 15 to 49 who are infected with HIV is lifted from Catalog Sources World Development Indicators updated in 2012 as baseline data for time series analysis. Results reveal an abrupt increase of HIV infected from 108.4 million in 1990 which reaches its peak in 2001 with 308.1 million HIV-infected. However, it is found out that starting 2001, 52% decrease in new HIV infections from 308.1 million to 265.8 million in 2012 is observed. Nevertheless, this will increase dramatically in 2050 due to several factors like health disparities which include differences that occur by gender, race or ethnicity, education or income, disability, geographic location or sexual orientation. Furthermore, HIV epidemic is mostly prevalent in Sub-Saharan Africa with 25 million cases that comprise 5% of the world total HIV victims.","PeriodicalId":396916,"journal":{"name":"Health Economics Evaluation Methods eJournal","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121597589","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods: We use data on country-level brain cancer death rates between 1990 and 2012 from the World Health Organization and lagged country-level mobile phone subscription rates from the World Bank to investigate the association between cell phones and brain cancer. We use a measure of mobile phone use that is not subject to recall problems, include controls for other country-level characteristics that may influence the prevalence of brain cancer and its mortality rate and identify effects that may only be detectable in the aggregate and over a period of multiple decades.Results: Mobile phone subscription rates are positively associated with death rates from brain cancer 15 years later [pConclusions: Mobile phone use may be associated with increased risk of brain cancer deaths.Impact: As new data become available, it will be possible to use our methods to connect recent variation in mobile phone use with lagged brain cancer mortality. To err on the side of caution, individuals may want to make greater use of the speaker phone and/or texting options on their cell phones or investigate cell phone cases that may deflect radiation away from their ears.","PeriodicalId":396916,"journal":{"name":"Health Economics Evaluation Methods eJournal","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-04-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129409539","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In return, the generic receives a payment and/or an authorized licensed entry at a later date but before the patent expiration. We examine why such deals are stable. We combine the first mover advantage for the first generic with the ability of the branded manufacturer to launch an authorized generic to show when pay-to-delay deals are an equilibrium outcome. Policy simulations show that removing the ability to launch authorized generics will deter such deals but removing exclusivity period for first generic will not.","PeriodicalId":396916,"journal":{"name":"Health Economics Evaluation Methods eJournal","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114522161","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These incentives are derived upon concepts of behavioral economics, in particular mental accounting, prospect theory and choice bracketing, and incorporated into deposit, copayment and bonus schemes. We conduct randomized laboratory experiments to evaluate the performance and effectiveness of each incentive scheme on persistence behavior under controlled conditions. Participants in the experiment are students remunerated according to their performance in the experiment.We find that financial incentive schemes based on the principles of prospect theory significantly improve treatment persistence compared to the situation where there are no incentives at all. This finding implies that the simple but smart re-allocation of co-payments and co-payment support between the treatment initiation phase and treatment maintenance phase represents an effective way of promoting persistence behavior.This study delivers first applications of behavioral interventions based on theoretical foundation. Using the method of experimental economics the study serves as a first proof of concept of a scalable way to design, calibrate and test the effectiveness of financial incentives on behavioral change. This approach is inevitable for broad application in real world as it minimizes the need for patient research while clarifying the impact of interventions under controlled conditions before these interventions get implemented in the field.","PeriodicalId":396916,"journal":{"name":"Health Economics Evaluation Methods eJournal","volume":"17 3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131809580","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Conventionally, Pharmacoeconomic outcomes are generally measured by ratios. The most commonly used ratios are the cost-effectiveness, cost-benefit, cost-utility and incremental cost-effectiveness ratios. However, ratios are fundamentally unsuitable to be used measures for the purpose of comparison across drugs or health programs that wildly differ in cost or effectiveness. For example, the cost of innovator brands are many times the cost of the same generic although effectiveness should be theoretically equal. Thus, medical decision making can be a fundamentally flawed process by relying on conventional ratios. Thus, we propose a candidate model that provide a new Pharmacoeconomic index that is symmetrical, proportional and scale invariant. These properties provide the vital invariance required for a broad range of decision making under great uncertainty for medical practitioners and policy makers.","PeriodicalId":396916,"journal":{"name":"Health Economics Evaluation Methods eJournal","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122843845","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Current systems are only temporarily masking the dilemma. New protocols at both the state and federal levels need to be implemented to tackle the problem at hand. Additional medical training on pain management and full disclosure to patients will also help reduce prescription pill abuse and result in many lives saved. Public awareness and a demand for change of the stigma of addiction is the only way this nation will succeed in fighting the epidemic and treating the disease of addiction.","PeriodicalId":396916,"journal":{"name":"Health Economics Evaluation Methods eJournal","volume":"91 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116663908","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The World will have more than 300 million diabetics by 2025. India alone accounts for more than 50 million patients which is the highest in the world. Very limited studies have been conducted before, which assessed the aware- ness of diabetes mellitus in slum dwellers especially in Mumbai. The aim and objective of the study was to assess the knowledge, attitude and awareness in slum dwellers of Mumbai, India. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at a slum area of Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. A well-structured questionnaire was distributed to 150 adults between 18 to 60 years. Data was collected and statistics were drawn with the help of SPSS 19. Results: In the present study, out of 150, 54.44 % were males (84) and 44 % were females (66). We observed that 71.33% of the slum dwellers have heard about diabetes. 35.33% consumes tobacco while 27.33% have alcohol every day. 20.66% are hypertensive and almost one fourth of them denied taking any medications. Approximately 60% knew the cause of diabetes. 72.33% did not know any signs & symptoms of diabetes. 35% and 40% did not have any knowledge regarding the methods used for investigations and complications of diabetes respectively. Conclusion: Overall, the present study showed that the aware- ness, attitude and knowledge was low in slum dwellers of Mumbai, India. In order to further prevent new cases and complications of diabetes, new schemes and policies of health awareness should be implemented at grass root level.","PeriodicalId":396916,"journal":{"name":"Health Economics Evaluation Methods eJournal","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128382936","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Compared to traditional cost-benefit analysis, we implement distributional weighting based on equivalent incomes, a new concept of individual well-being that does respect individual preferences but is not subjectively welfarist. Individual preferences are estimated on the basis of a contingent valuation question, introduced into a representative survey of the French population. Compared to traditional cost-effectiveness analysis in health technology assessment, we show that it is practically feasible to go beyond a narrow evaluation of health outcomes while still fully exploiting the technical sophistication of medical information. Sensitivity analysis illustrates the relevancy of this richer welfare framework, the importance of the distinction between an ex ante and an ex post-approach, and the need to consider distributional effects in a broader institutional setting.","PeriodicalId":396916,"journal":{"name":"Health Economics Evaluation Methods eJournal","volume":"2011 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133719155","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
