Cooperatives under investigation are of average size (turnover between 30 and 50 million euro) and large (turnover of more than 50 million euro). The results support the argument that cooperatives have a strong resilience during times of economic crisis. In particular, the cooperatives operating in the field of multi-services (mainly cleaning and waste collection services) and food service activities have registered brilliant results, while those operating in the field of transportation and cargo, have been more severely affected by the crisis of the manufacturing sector. The same conclusions result from the analysis carried out on employment data. The results for firm size show that bigger cooperatives have better performances.","PeriodicalId":396770,"journal":{"name":"ORG: Other Types of Organizations & Organizational Behavior (Topic)","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129679469","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Most large institutions lack effective democratic control by voters. Even though citizens of democracies can vote, corporate shareowners can vote, and co-op members can vote, those voting rights are ineffective if voters lack the information, insight and nomination rights necessary to elect the best leaders. This paper outlines how we can better implement the fundamental co-op principle of democratic member control, even when co-ops grow very large. Later we can apply these ideas to our democracies and corporations.Democratic accountability to voters need not come with a cost of decreased effectiveness of the co-op's management. On the contrary, if democratic reform includes a voter information system that gives voting members insight into which director candidates would better serve the co-op and thus its members, the result will be improved performance of the co-op.Instead of co-ops following corporations down the path of undemocratic governance, they can lead corporations toward democratic governance. All that's needed is for us voters to learn which governance changes are democratically empowering, and which are disempowering. In particular, improving our voter information systems can enhance director elections and board accountability.Co-ops that grow large (e.g. over 10,000 members) often tend to become less democratic. Voter turnout falls, and boards become less accountable to members. Boards may create bylaws and rules that shift power from members to boards. Directors may become more allied with a co-op's senior staff than with the members. As this trend progresses, a co-op's power structure can become an oligarchy. But the trend is not inevitable -- we can reverse it. The further a co-op slides toward oligarchy, the harder it is to reverse; but it's never too late, as the Arab Spring has recently reminded us.","PeriodicalId":396770,"journal":{"name":"ORG: Other Types of Organizations & Organizational Behavior (Topic)","volume":"304 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-09-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114598898","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

But what does learning mean and how can it become an attribute of an economic entity? In order to obtain an answer to this question a research had been developed. This aimed to identify the similarities and differences between organizational learning and learning organization. The goal had been achieved through a content analysis of the relevant literature. In the end, we find out that the learning organization may be categorized as a useful illusion which emphasis the importance of promoting the organizational learning within the company.","PeriodicalId":396770,"journal":{"name":"ORG: Other Types of Organizations & Organizational Behavior (Topic)","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125053169","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In examining overviews of past single perspective entrepreneurship research, this study shows that the primary role of entrepreneurs in organisation emergence is to acquire knowledge and create social capital properly. This process is necessarily accompanied by creation of knowledge communities to establish the domain consensus of new organisations among various stakeholders paying particular attention to the fragility and dysfunctional side of entrepreneurship and social capital. The paper concludes with a hypothesis and suggestions towards a future research agenda. It is hoped that, as a result of this theoretical development, this paper will help to focus greater attention on the concept of entrepreneurship in studies of management development.","PeriodicalId":396770,"journal":{"name":"ORG: Other Types of Organizations & Organizational Behavior (Topic)","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-04-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116758569","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Finding - The findings indicate that IP significantly influences other dimension of IC which consists of Human Capital (HC), Relational Capital (RC) and Structural Capital (SC). The study also provides empirical evidence that gaining firm performance is positively related to these three elements of IC. Research limitation/Implications - Firstly, more advanced statistical techniques with larger number of respondent could be used to evaluate the regression equations. Secondly, the companies chosen for the study are from two specific and fairly similar industries in Iran. Thus, the results may not be applicable to other industries in different countries.Practical Implications - With a broad view on IP that considers its creation, protection and utilization too, IP have a central role in knowledge-based organizations to enhance competitive advantages.Originality/Value - This study builds on and extends the research made by Bollen et al. (2005) to link IP and IC to company performance. On the contrary, the authors focus on the effects of IP on other parts of IC.","PeriodicalId":396770,"journal":{"name":"ORG: Other Types of Organizations & Organizational Behavior (Topic)","volume":"158 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126206176","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
