In this paper, the impact of watermarking attacks on the performance of offline signature verification is assessed in the context of intelligent bio-watermarking systems. The considered system is based on incremental learning computational intelligence, and multi-objective formulation that allows optimizing parameters according to watermark quality and robustness simultaneously. In this study, Extended Shadow Code features are extracted from digitized offline signatures, collected into feature vectors, and discretized into binary watermarks prior to being embedded into high resolution grayscale face image. The impact on biometric verification performance of quantization and different intensities of attacks are considered, and also observed the impact of using only certain areas of face images of higher texture Region Of Interest (ROI) for embedding the watermark. Experimental results conclude the optimal discretization, and better watermark fitness and verification performance when embedding in ROI. To improve the performance in future research, the authors propose to embed more reference signatures, use efficient ROI identification techniques, and finally novel formulation to add biometrics verification fitness to the watermark quality and robustness fitness during embedding optimization. The proposed system can be applied for verifying individuals crossing borders using offline signatures, or protecting biometric templates.","PeriodicalId":396721,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Workshop on Computational Intelligence in Biometrics and Identity Management (CIBIM)","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-04-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124153398","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For some of the traits (e.g., face and iris) significant research efforts were already made toward the development of systems able to operate in completely unconstrained conditions. For other traits (e.g., the ear) no similar efforts are known. The main purpose of this paper is to announce the availability of a new data set of ear images, which main distinguishing feature is that its images were acquired from on-the-move subjects, under varying lighting conditions and without demanding to subjects any particular care regarding ear occlusions and poses. The data set is freely available to the research community and should constitute a valuable tool in assessing the possibility of performing reliable ear biometric recognition in such d challenging conditions.","PeriodicalId":396721,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Workshop on Computational Intelligence in Biometrics and Identity Management (CIBIM)","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-04-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122214357","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A novel approach for face detection is presented in this paper. Multiple algorithms are used to process the same face image, but extract different facial features. Since it does not amplify the errors, the sum rule is applied to the score outputs of multiple detectors. Different from the other approaches that use the pre-set weights, a fuzzy model is developed to dynamically generate the weights based on the image quality. The experimental results demonstrate a distinct advantage of the proposed method - detecting face in a near dark environment.","PeriodicalId":396721,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Workshop on Computational Intelligence in Biometrics and Identity Management (CIBIM)","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-04-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125706082","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A new technique called Bilateral Processing (BP) was implemented to analyze discordances in left and right trait sides. BP tested visible and infrared spectrum trait images using Cross-Correlation, Wavelets and Neural Networks. Selected traits were tooth, ear, iris, fingerprint, nose and cheek. Acoustic BP was also implemented for skin vibration asymmetry evaluation during voiced sounds and compared to MFCC plus Vector Quantization speaker recognition system. Image and acoustic BP investigated bilateral sides of 9 adult male brothers during one year. Results achieved 100% identification in all biometrics treated with BP, compared to a maximum 44% of correct identification without BP. Apart from ameliorating performance, the study concludes that body structure analyses incorporating biognostic mechanisms can complement traditional recognition approaches.","PeriodicalId":396721,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Workshop on Computational Intelligence in Biometrics and Identity Management (CIBIM)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-04-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125386930","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Belief networks provide a coherent environment in which beliefs about target propositions can be re-evaluated using newly acquired evidence. Contact-less systems achieve the fingerprint capture by vision systems avoiding that users touch any parts of the biometric device. Typically, the finger is placed in the working area of an optics system coupled with a CCD module. The captured light pattern on the finger is related to the real ridges and valleys of the user fingertip, but the obtained images present important differences from the traditional fingerprint images. These differences are related to multiple factors such as light, focus, blur, and the color of the skin. Unfortunately, the identity comparison methods designed for fingerprint images captured with touch-based sensors do not obtain sufficient accuracy when are directly applied to touch-less images. Recent works show that multiple views analysis and 3D reconstruction can enhance the final biometric accuracy of such systems. In this paper we propose a new method for the identification of the minutiae pairs between two views of the same finger, an important step in the 3D reconstruction of the fingerprint template. The method is divisible in the sequent tasks: first, an image preprocessing step is performed; second, a set of candidate minutiae pairs is selected in the two images, then a list of candidate pairs is created; last, a set of local features centered around the two minutiae is produced and processed by a classifier based on a trained neural network. The output of the system is the list of the minutiae pairs present in the input images. Experiments show that the method is feasible and accurate in different light conditions and setup configurations.","PeriodicalId":396721,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Workshop on Computational Intelligence in Biometrics and Identity Management (CIBIM)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-04-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128410857","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Parameter management schemes for cancelable biometrics","authors":"Kenta Takahashi, Shinji Hirata","doi":"10.1109/CIBIM.2011.5949210","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/CIBIM.2011.5949210","url":null,"abstract":"Protecting biometric information is a critical issue in biometric systems, since physical characteristics such as fingerprints, irises, face and vein patterns, cannot be changed or revoked like passwords. To address this issue, an authentication scheme called cancelable biometrics has been studied, in which the biometric features are transformed by a kind of encryption or one-way function and matched without restoring the original features. The transformation function is determined by a user-specific parameter, which plays a similar roll as an encryption key. To secure biometric features using the cancelable biometrics, the parameters have to be managed properly. In this paper, we review several naive schemes for parameter management and point out that they reduce the usability of authentication systems. Then we propose a novel parameter management scheme based on server-side parameter management and authentication protocols using one-time parameters and one-time templates. Our scheme makes it possible to realize a cancelable biometric authentication system with high usability and security.","PeriodicalId":396721,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Workshop on Computational Intelligence in Biometrics and Identity Management (CIBIM)","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-04-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116549620","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These skeletons are 1-pixel wide structures which retain the topology of the segmented image. They are used for computer vision, edge detection or high level feature extraction for example in biometric systems. In this paper a fast method on how to extract specific feature points from skeletonized structures is presented. The convolution of the skeleton image with a bi-dimensional mask of size M×N enables us to identify arbitrary structures of the mask size in the skeleton. Of special interest are branch and endpoints of the skeletons to get high level features for biometric comparisons. The problem can here be reduced to the following: in an 8-connected skeleton within a 3×3 mask there are 8 structures that correspond to endpoints and 18 to branch points. After applying the convolution, the search for feature points corresponds to finding the 26 different filter response values in the resulting signal. We describe how the convolution approach is applied to biometric vein recognition systems and show that our approach yields a 430% speedup when compared to the crossing number approach used in ANSI/NIST.","PeriodicalId":396721,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Workshop on Computational Intelligence in Biometrics and Identity Management (CIBIM)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-04-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114302948","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Poor-quality samples increase the enrollment failure, and decrease the system performance. Therefore, it is important for a biometric system to estimate the quality of the acquired biometric samples. Toward this goal, we present in this paper a multi-class SVM-based method to predict sample quality. The proposed method uses two types of information: the first one is based on the image quality and the second is a pattern-based quality using the SIFT keypoints extracted from the image. For the experiments, we use four large and significant face databases to show the efficiency of the proposed method in predicting the system performance illustrated by the Equal Error Rate (EER).","PeriodicalId":396721,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Workshop on Computational Intelligence in Biometrics and Identity Management (CIBIM)","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-04-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114790785","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
