The device was constructed from plastic sheets containing small, recessed wells. The wells were filled with liquid culture medium and inoculated with conidia of Beauveria bassiana (Bals.-Criv.) Vuill.. After incubation, the devices were hung in cages containing a yerba mate seedling and adults of G. spegazziniana. For comparison, yellow cardboard cards impregnated with conidia were used. There were 28 times more conidia in plastic device than in the yellow card. Conidia had a germination level above 90% and infected approximately 56% of the insects. Further tests in the field are planned to evaluate its effectiveness for managing populations of G. spegazziniana in yerba mate.","PeriodicalId":395961,"journal":{"name":"BioAssay","volume":"30 33","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138946945","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Toxic baits with the active ingredients fipronil and sulfluramid are the main method to manage these insects. The internal hygiene of the ant colony needs to be considered to carry out chemical control of LCA. The baits must act as a true ‘Trojan horse’ deceiving the toxic action during the moment of transport. The objective was to evaluate fipronil and sulfluramid in toxic baits against Acromyrmex crassispinus (Forel, 1909) (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) in the laboratory. The action was observed in the first hours after application. The pick-up of the bait with fipronil was more heterogeneous and more random than that with the sulfluramid. Individuals of A. crassispinus stopped cutting leaves after four and seven days after application (DAA) of fipronil and sulfluramid baits, respectively. The foraging activity tended to zero over time with the sulfluramid bait, but a low carry of leaves was observed on the 11th DAA with the fipronil bait. The fipronil and sulfluramid baits, in laboratory conditions, were toxic and efficient to the ant A. crassispinus. The lethal action of fipronil was faster, an undesired aspect in the management of social insects. A control method that simulates the mythical ‘Trojan horse’ on LCAs nests is desirable.","PeriodicalId":395961,"journal":{"name":"BioAssay","volume":"55 32","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138949427","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There are few studies about this science in the Brazilian academic world. Thus, this study aims to review this topic with emphasis on reporting successful experiences in different countries. A significant number of papers shows the advantages of using phytosanitary products infusions and injections in plants to control pests and diseases, when compared to traditional spraying. In endotherapy there is no product drift and, therefore, it is minimal the chance of reaching non-target organisms. Furthermore, the protective effect is more persistent due to the non-exposure of the products to the climate adverse effects. It is currently applied only in small areas in medium and large perennial plants due to its high cost, requiring new technologies for large-scale application. In Brazil, there are few studies about the efficiency of this tactic in phytosanitary management. Furthermore, there are studies to determine residues of fungicides and insecticides in plants through chromatographic techniques. Thus, endotherapy can be an efficient technique for phytosanitary defense.","PeriodicalId":395961,"journal":{"name":"BioAssay","volume":"14 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138972991","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The most common method for its control is chemical, but the indiscriminate use of pesticides, in addition to causing adverse effects to humans and the environment due to the toxicity of the products, favors the development of resistant individuals, thus causing the insect in question is difficult to control. Plants popularly known as myrtle (Murraya paniculata), guaco (Mikania glomerata), são Caetano melon (Momordica charantia) and lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) have demonstrated pharmacological potential, presenting repellent or toxic effects to insects. Thus, the objective of this work was to analyze in the laboratory the insecticidal activity of M. paniculata, M. glomerata, M.charantia and M. officinalis on the biological parameters of S. frugiperda, through the incorporation of extracts in artificial diets. Based on the results obtained, a significant insecticidal activity of the myrtle leaf extract (Murraya paniculata) was observed on S. frugiperda, as it caused a significant reduction in larval and pupal viability.","PeriodicalId":395961,"journal":{"name":"BioAssay","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115076482","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

(Coleoptera: Curculionidae) is considered a key pest of coconut crop. Therefore, the objective of this research was to evaluate the efficiency by contact of the insecticide thiamethoxam on adults of R. palmarum, determining the lethal concentrations (LC50 and LC90), under laboratory conditions. One mL of insecticide solution was applied to the insect body at concentrations of 1 ppm, 2 ppm, 3 ppm, 4 ppm and 5 ppm. Insect mortality in the treatments was evaluated after five days. The comparison of means was performed by the Tukey test at 5% significance. For determining the lethal concentrations of 50 and 90%, Probit analysis was performed. The LC50 (2.16 ppm) and LC90 (4.23 ppm) remained within the confidence interval. The concentration of 5 ppm caused 100% mortality, evidencing the efficiency of the insecticide by contact, demonstrating a promising alternative in controlling this pest.","PeriodicalId":395961,"journal":{"name":"BioAssay","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114559783","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In addition to its global value as the main source of sugar, energy, and ethanol, it is a raw material for several products. However, phytosanitary problems cause significant losses in the agricultural production of the crop, of which most are only due to the ineffective management of insect pests. We evaluated the impact of the application of insecticides used in sugarcane crops on the predation of eggs of Ephestia kuehniella (Zeller) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) under field conditions. For this, cards containing 30 eggs of this species were fixed in the middle third of sugarcane plants and exposed to predation by insects present in areas sprayed with insecticides: thiamethoxam; lambda-cyhalothrin + thiamethoxam; fipronil and Metarhizium anisopliae, in addition to a control (area without spraying). The dose used for insecticides was the minimum recommended for control of insect pests in the crop. The cards remained in the areas for 24 hours after the insecticides spraying, being collected for evaluation after this period. The cards from areas sprayed with thiamethoxam; lambda-cyhalothrin + thiamethoxam and fipronil, the average number of eggs remaining was significantly higher. While in the treatments control and M. anisopliae, there was a significant reduction in the number of preyed eggs, evidencing that the chemical insecticides tested affected the rates of predation in the field, a fact not found with the biological insecticide M. anisopliae.\u0000 ","PeriodicalId":395961,"journal":{"name":"BioAssay","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134283876","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Results obtained with plant extracts for termites control show that they may be a potential cheap control method. In Brazil, the phytopharmacological collection is still understudied, more investigations on the biological proprieties of forests species that present toxicity to xylophagous insects are needed. The goal of this paper is to test the antifeedant and repellent potential of Tachigali paniculata and Peltogyne venosa (Fabaceae) against Cryptotermes brevis (Walker) (Isoptera: Kalotermitidae). Ethanolic tested extracts were obtained from P. venosa and T. paniculata bark. The experiment was performed in Petri dishes containing filter paper impregnated with 0.1; 1; 2; 5 and 10% concentrations of cited extracts. Each Petri dish was considered as an experimental unit, containing ten pseudo-workers and a soldier. The experiment was observed during 30 days. Bark extracts from P. venosa and T. paniculata presented antifeedant activity (p < 0.0001) for C. brevis, however, only P. venosa showed an increase in mortality when compared to other treatments (P < 0.001, F3.76 = 27.296). Tests with extracts from other parts of the plants in question are recommended for future studies. Furthermore, we suggest the use of solvents with different polarities for new mortality tests, since the preliminary studies identified potential insecticide compounds, like alkaloids and saponins.","PeriodicalId":395961,"journal":{"name":"BioAssay","volume":"72 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114179378","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The leafminer fly, Liriomyza sativae (Blanchard) (Diptera: Agromyzidae), is one of the major problems that negatively interfere in the productivity increase in this crop. Chemical control is the most adopted method for this pest; however, producers have reported reduced susceptibility to insecticides. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the susceptibility of L. sativae larvae to abamectin, cyromazine, and cyantraniliprole from populations collected from two melon crop-producing regions in Northeast Brazil (Juazeiro, BA and Icapuí, CE). The insecticide's lethal concentration 50 (LC50) was obtained in the laboratory using the leaf dip bioassay method with L. sativae larvae.
