The behaviour changes with the number of load cycles applied. Changes concern global slope and degree of nonlinearity of stress-strain paths and the magnitude of remaining irreversible strain after unloading. These changes are huge in the first load cycles and decline rapidly in the following ones. This shows an increasing mechanical saturation to a mainly elastic behaviour. However, some of the changes of the mechanical properties do not come to a halt. Only in infinity they approach an invariable, mechanically saturated state. Nonetheless, in a state acceptably close to the ideal saturated state, the stress–strain paths reveal the elastic share of the initially inelastic stress–strain paths of woven fabrics. This contribution investigates the number of load cycles required to achieve a mechanically saturated state by means of monotonous cyclic biaxial tensile tests on PVC-coated polyester fabrics and PTFE-coated glass fibre fabrics. It is found that irreversible strain increments decrease fast to low constant levels with low scatter after approximately a dozen load cycles. In contrast to that, other properties like the global slope or nonlinearity of the stress-strain paths saturate only after a number of load cycles of several orders of magnitude more than those for the irreversible strain. Changes of stiffness parameters in late cycles are slow but can be considerably","PeriodicalId":395358,"journal":{"name":"10th edition of the conference on Textile Composites and Inflatable Structures","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115920144","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An adaptive building envelope transforms a stadium within minutes into a multifunctional arena, improves the interior climate, comfort and general acoustics. The Al Janoub Stadium in Qatar features a 10.800 m² innovative retractable membrane roof. The layout of the retractable roof has been developed to perfectly fit to the overall architectural appearance of the building. Within 30 minutes the retractable roof can be closed to provide full shade for the playing field and the stands, which is essential in areas with strong solar radiation to reduce the temperature and to provide the desired spectator comfort. The stadium is located in the port city of Al Wakrah, south of Doha. The intention is to host over 40,000 spectators during the FIFA 2022 Worldcup. Being one of the oldest cities in Qatar, Al Wakrah used to be the starting point for the traditional Dhow fishing and pearl boats. The striking hull of a dhow with its large sails inspired Zaha Hadid Architects to create such futuristic design. The roof support structure resembles the skeleton of ship frames, surrounded by a roof skin with gracefully curved surfaces and folds, interpreting the waters of the Persian Gulf. The inner retractable roof above the field of play measures approximately 170 m in north-south direction and up to 93 m in east-west direction. The elegant concept for the inner roof is very efficiently based on lightweight construction principles. Low-mass and high-strength materials significantly reduce the consumption of resources. Most elements are only axially utilized in tension so the cross-sections can be minimalized resulting in a very elegant appearance.","PeriodicalId":395358,"journal":{"name":"10th edition of the conference on Textile Composites and Inflatable Structures","volume":"90 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126535816","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although they are widely employed to withstand severe hygrothermal and mechanical loading conditions [1], the remarkably incomplete understanding of their governing deformation mechanisms before, after, and at the onset of yielding represents a limit in the development of such innovative systems [2]. In this work, we present a new experimental method, based on the inflation of plane membranes, to characterise the yield strength of elastomeric thin films, thus overcoming the limitations of the available empirical techniques. The phenomenon of strain localisation during inflation, which has not been utilised before, is employed to identify the material yield domain. The framework is developed by obtaining a finite strain analytical solution for the inflation of elastoplastic thin films that is numerically validated by means of finite element simulations. The proposed technique is graphically illustrated in Figure 1 with the help of strain contours obtained by the analytical method and FEA. A hypothetical bilinear elastoplastic material, Figure 1(a), with elastic modulus E , yield stress 𝜎 𝑦 and a tangent modulus E t in the plastic phase of the material is used as an example. The accumulation of strain at the centre is evident in Figure 1(c) and (d) after the occurrence of plasticity, which was maximum on the edges during the elastic phase, Figure 1(b). Through the digital image correlation technique, experiments are performed for several materials on a custom-made setup and they prove the accuracy and reliability of the proposed technique in assessing the onset of the plasticity of highly deformable membranes. Therefore, such observed localisation can be employed for the development of a novel imaging technique to assess the yield strength in thin films.","PeriodicalId":395358,"journal":{"name":"10th edition of the conference on Textile Composites and Inflatable Structures","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116262912","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
