They are membrane structures that acquire load-bearing capacities with internal pressure. They are made of two fabric layers linked together by high-strength threads to keep both sides parallel. The panel is then sealed by lateral walls and pressurized. While it may look like a plate, traditional plate theories cannot be applied since they ignore the internal pressure forces. The aim of this work is to develop a theoretical framework and expertise on inflatable panels to design reliable inflatable buildings. A theory of inflatable beams has been developed for over 50 years [1,2,3,4,5]. However, there is little work on inflatable panels. Wielgosz [6] studied inflatable panels by considering them as beams, but there is no theory of inflatable plates. In this work, we propose a theoretical model based on the Mindlin-Reissner plate theory which takes into account the internal pressure. The hyperelastic Saint Venant-Kirchhoff material model is used for the membranes. Nonlinear equations for the dynamics of inflatable panels are derived from the principle of virtual power for large displacements. The resulting PDEs can be solved for the displacement of the mid-surface and the direction of the fibers. In order to find analytical solutions, we linearized around the pre-stressed equilibrium state. Solutions are found for clamped or simply-supported circular panels with uniform vertical load, as well as for rectangular panels with supported and free edges. The pressurization gives rise to additional stiffness terms which play a key part in structural integrity. The analytical solutions are compared to 3D finite element results. In the linear elastic range, the predicted deflection is found to be in good accordance with finite element simulations.","PeriodicalId":395358,"journal":{"name":"10th edition of the conference on Textile Composites and Inflatable Structures","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120990550","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They are very similar in applications to very common automotive airbags that protect passengers during accidents. Their construction standard was established in 1980’ [ 1] and has not changed to this day. The requirement to be equipped with these devices is imposed on emergency services in many countries of the world because authorities recognize the fact that these are life-saving equipment. However, there are no observed scientific or engineering attempts to improve their design, or even to investigate it in a systematic manner using computer aided methods and experiments. Much effort is focused on car airbags [2], landing systems [3] or wearable airbags [4,5]. This scientific research gap has been addressed by the authors. The primary goal of the research is to improve the system ’s response under different impact conditions, what will result in higher safety of the equipment and greater trust to rescue cushions. In order to achieve this goal, a complex study, including modelling, simulation and experimental validation of models, is required. Within this contribution authors discuss the procedure of elaborating a computer model of rescue cushion in CAE system. Technical details of the model, such as the material and fluid models or ground interaction, and difficulties encountered during its preparation, are discussed and explained. Research procedure is started by formulating necessary assumptions and introducing the modelling methods. Then the numerical model is implemented and validated using a laboratory demonstrator. Influence of the selected parameters on the accuracy of the model, as well as on the performance of rescue cushion system, is analysed. Biggest challenges and directions of further research are indicated.","PeriodicalId":395358,"journal":{"name":"10th edition of the conference on Textile Composites and Inflatable Structures","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115566009","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposal, created by Frei Otto, Kenzo Tange, and Arup embodied a convergence of ideologies that elevated ingenuity in structural design to the forefront of broader discussion of human occupation in extreme ecological conditions. The designers believed that innovations in design science could help envision a resilient and quasi-utopian future for how, and where, humans might eventually live—a proposal that is particular relevant today, 50 years later. The paper will contextualize the designer’s work and broader pneumatic design efforts in this era as a way of providing insight into their ideologies and the technical limits they encountered. Otto’s earliest design and research efforts, focused nearly exclusively on how pneumatics could assist humanitarian efforts by providing lightweight and adaptable shelter and infrastructure, even in extreme conditions [2]. Tange specialized in futuristic megastructure / infrastructural system designs, and Arup’s Structures 3 division was the leading specialist in innovative engineering. Technically the proposal was innovative with merits and limitations that remain relevant. By 1971, pneumatics had long been used in feasibility proposals for massive free-spanning structures, as the engineering calculations were easier to confirm than other lightweight structures [3]. Because of the climate conditions of wind, snow, and weather variations, they proposed a grid of high-strength polyester fiber cables, and a unique (pre-ETFE) double-layer pillowed membrane that would have ideally allowed the enclosure to act more as a skin rather than a true dome—other technical aspects were less successful in retrospect. Overall, they developed details for many living and working conditions in (and out) of the dome which are illustrative of extreme climate concerns we face today. Eventually Otto criticized the proposal’s scale and its disregard","PeriodicalId":395358,"journal":{"name":"10th edition of the conference on Textile Composites and Inflatable Structures","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116210746","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

During this event, there was also heavy rainfall which caused ponding on the membrane structures. We believe one possible mechanism that resulted in the damage to the tents is the large vertical oscillation of the water mass with the membrane, excited by the fluctuating wind loads. This can easily be seen in the available video footages. The primary motivation of the current work is to simulate such a phenomenon. This requires unsteady fluid-structure interaction (FSI) simulation involving the wind, ponding water, and a membrane structure. In previous work [2], we developed methods for determining the initial condition of membrane structure with ponding for the unsteady FSI simulation, where the developed methods were used to calculate the static deformation of membrane structures under ponding loads. In the present work, we propose a novel coupling strategy to solve such problems, where the wind, water, and membrane are simulated using three different solvers. The simulation of the wind is carried out by an OpenFOAM incompressible solver with large eddy simulation (wind solver), while for modeling the movement of water on the membrane an OpenFOAM volume of fluid solver (VoF) is used (water solver), and the structural solver with membrane elements in KratosMultiphysics is employed for modeling the membrane structure (structural solver). The coupling strategy couples the structural solver in parallel with the wind and the water solver. This means that in the partitioned simulation, the structural solver receives tractions from the wind and water solvers, which are added and applied to the structure.","PeriodicalId":395358,"journal":{"name":"10th edition of the conference on Textile Composites and Inflatable Structures","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128077776","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Both components show a different behaviour under mechanical loading. As a consequence, the behaviour under uniaxial loading differs from the one under biaxial loading. This will be shown by the results of respective experiments. From these experiments one can conclude that the structure of the mechanical behaviour is transverse isotropic: The behaviour in the direction of the thickness is different from the one in the plane of the film. This difference between the behaviour in uniaxial and biaxial loading is shown very clearly in the experiments where the load is increased beyond the yield point. In the biaxial case the deformations are less than in the uniaxial one. The viscous parts of the deformations are different too. But in both cases the behaviour, once the yield point is passed and the load is reduced, is more or less elastic with some viscous influences. Based on these experiments one can establish design rules for ETFE-films beyond the yield-point. Furthermore the „compensation deformation“ can be determined from the results of biaxial tests. These deformations are nothing else than the irreversible part of the plastic deformations. It is to add that the analysis of the structural behaviour of ETFE-films does not need to include elastic-plastic material behaviour, the knowledge of the irreversible part of the plastic behaviour is sufficient.","PeriodicalId":395358,"journal":{"name":"10th edition of the conference on Textile Composites and Inflatable Structures","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130440232","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
