Economic nationalism came to Malaysia later than it did for its neighbours, and scholars have neglected crucial perspectives on how it took shape. One salient symbol of this national sovereignty came with the formation of a national oil company, PETRONAS, which overcame internal and external political threats, corporate intimidation by oil multinationals, and an initial lack of trained specialist staff. Drawing upon primary sources from diverse perspectives, this article discusses how PETRONAS became a global player in the fossil fuel industry, and negotiated successfully with well-established international partners and competitors.","PeriodicalId":39524,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Malaysian Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society","volume":"94 1","pages":"119 - 144"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1353/ras.2021.0014","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48632303","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It encourages us to imagine a different, ethical mode of living with animals even if it involves risks to ourselves. Each contributor to this roundtable critically analyzes an aspect of the book. Alicia Izharuddin focuses on issues arising from gendered care in the volume, Monamie Haines reflects on how the book deploys the concepts of nature-culture and decolonization, Faizah Zakaria discusses the moral imperatives in the book and the possibilities it holds for radical change, and Robert Cribb analyzes the book's colonial framework and the multiple meanings that freedom could take for humans and animals alike.","PeriodicalId":39524,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Malaysian Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society","volume":"94 1","pages":"203 - 215"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1353/ras.2021.0019","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44817885","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using published memoirs, interview material from the Oral History Centre at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), and personal interviews with two former women cadres of the MCP, this article focuses on the views of women who defected before the signing of the 1989 Haadyai Peace Accord. It provides the perspective of ordinary members on the MCP's ideas regarding war and revolution, and the position of women.","PeriodicalId":39524,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Malaysian Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society","volume":"94 1","pages":"100 - 75"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1353/ras.2021.0012","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41448580","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Vietnamese official records and Cam historical narratives show the role Malays played in the conflicts that tore through the region, but a detailed examination of these sources raises new questions regarding the origins of these Malay figures and their intentions. This study of the Malay Diaspora in the Indochinese Peninsula as seen through vernacular accounts goes beyond nationalist stereotypes and expands understandings of the dynamics of inter-ethnic associations in Southeast Asia.","PeriodicalId":39524,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Malaysian Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society","volume":"94 1","pages":"1 - 23"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1353/ras.2021.0009","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42149775","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
