Earthenware pottery is one of the tools used by prehistoric society as a tool for use in daily life. Earthenware pottery found at archaeological sites should be determined whether it was made by the local community or brought in from outside. Therefore, chemical analysis using X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) and mineralogical analysis using X-ray Diffraction (XRD) methods need to be done to obtain the mineral content and elements of earthenware pottery that can be compared with clay found in the area. This comparison is to ascertain whether the prehistoric pottery was made in the vicinity of the discovery area or brought in from outside. The results of this study found that the pottery discovered during excavations at Gua Jaya was brought in from other areas. Besides, it was also determined that the pottery was burned openly due to the uneven combustion temperature. The Malay Basin is known to have shown evidence of vitrinite reflectance (Ro) suppression in a selection of wells that were also analysed using the FAMM (Fluorescence Alteration of Multiple Macerals) technique. Analysis of available data suggests that potential vitrinite reflectance suppression may be identified using an empirical regression line which separates “suppressed” from “normal” Ro values based on the FAMM data. The “FAMM minimum regression line” was used to screen through Ro data from 142 wells (drilled between 1969 and 2005) in the Malay Basin and it is estimated that a quarter of those wells might be affected by suppression. Possible suppression was also noted in the Penyu Basin, where bottom-hole temperatures in some wells are consistently higher than Ro-derived temperatures. The regression line could be used as a tool for quick screening of legacy Ro data for potential suppression of vitrinite reflectance. The present of igneous and metamorphic rock at Hulu Langat creates diversity in rock, features and geomorphological features includes hot spring, waterfall, hill and mountain that hold potential as a protected geosite of heritage value. Besides, the previous tin mining activities created by the contact metamorphism, left series of lakes and ponds while the nearby mountain is susceptible area as watershed that turn into dams around the area. Analysis on topographical maps, satellite image and aerial photograph interpretation aided in identification potential geosite based on geomorphological diversity. A total of 31 potential geosites with geological-scientific value have been identified in this study compare to 10 from the previous study. The potential geosite have been classified into rock diversity, natural landscape diversity and anthropogenic landscape diversity. Characterisation recognise 6 of these potential geosite are best example or tip location to illustrate the geological element, 4 of these geosites are the only occurrence of the geological element, 27 of the potential geosites are well preserved and 4 hold the scientific knowledge written in the international journal. The intermediate saprock (Zone II) is 1.12 m thick and consists of brown, very stiff, sandy silt with many lateritic concretions, whilst the bottom bedrock (Zone III) is an outcrop of vesicular olivine basalt with weathering along joints. Constant volume samples show the saprolite (sub-zone IC) to have dry unit weights of 11.78 to 12.80 kN/m3, whilst the solum (sub-zones IA and IB), and saprock, have values ranging from 10.65 to 11.09, and from 11.35 to 11.50, kN/m3, respectively. Porosities are variable; the saprolite with the lowest values of 52 to 56% and the solum and saprock with values of 57 to 60%. Clay and silt contents increase up the profile with a corresponding decrease in sand and gravel contents. Colloid (<1 μm size) contents especially increase up the profile from 10 to 15% in saprock through 30 to 40% in saprolite and exceeding 57% in the solum, These increasing colloid contents point to the increasing effects of pedological processes. Thin-sections of weathered rims (1-2 cm thick) show alteration of basalt to start with formation of micro-cracks (Stage 1) that become stained by secondary iron oxides and hydroxides. Decomposition of the essential minerals then occurs in the order: olivine (Stage 2), augite (Stage 3), and plagioclase feldspar (Stage 4). An increase in apparent porosity, but a decrease in unit weights and specific gravity, reflect these stages of weathering; the boundary between ‘rock’ and ‘soil’ material occurring when all olivine and augite crystals have decomposed. A geological review has been carried out in Kampung Bukit Besi, Temangan, in Kelantan, Malaysia, which is composed of schist, shale, andesite, and ignimbrite. In Temangan, andesite and ignimbrite show an intimate relationship, as the ignimbrite exists as the fragments and andesite as the matrix. The methodology used in this study are petrography and X-ray Diffraction (XRD) analyses, to determine the mineralogical composition of andesitic ignimbrite. Andesite shows aphenitic and porphyritic textures and consist of pyroxene, plagioclase, alkali feldspar, quartz, biotite and iron oxides. A range of plagioclase textures indicate imperfect equilibrium condition from andesite, reflecting plagioclase dissolution and regrowth. The structural analysis suggest that thrust fault occurred in the study area. Amar","doi":"10.7186/bgsm72202111","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.7186/bgsm72202111","url":null,"abstract":"A marine sediment core EW17-09 (03˚ 28’358” latitude and 96˚ 18’788” longitude, 870 m water depth, 390 cm core length) was retrieved from the western Sumatra, Simeulue sub-basin, Indonesia. Simeulue sub-basin are situated in eastern Indian Ocean, western part of Aceh Province, which is one of the outer islands in Indonesia. This sub-basin is influenced by adjacent lands in response to tectonic and climate dynamics. The dynamics of marine ecological conditions in the past is an urgent need for providing an analogy to the changes in the future conditions. In this study, the ecological conditions were examined by identifying the vertical distribution of planktonic foraminifera assemblages. This preliminary study demonstrated the presence of Globigerinoides ruber, Neogloboquadrina dutertrei, Pulleniatina obliquiloculata, Globigerina calida calida, Globigerinoides elongates, Globigerinoides cyclostomus and Globigerinoides sacculiferus in the samples. The assemblages indicate warm water conditions prevailed in the Simeulue sub-basin during the deposition of the samples. However, subtle ecological changes might have occurred in response to the dynamic of thermocline layer. Cluster analysis of planktonic foraminifera abundance and diversity resulted in three groups showing different ecological conditions. Warm water conditions, high salinity, deeper thermocline with moderate sedimentation disturbance prevailed during the deposition of lower part of the core. Oligotropic water conditions with higher temperature, lower salinity, shallower thermocline layer, and moderate sedimentation disturbance predominated during the deposition of the middle part of the core. The paleooceanography conditions of the upper part of the core are comparable to the lower part. Nevertheless, there are a shoaling of the thermocline in the end of the period. The basis of an industry success is the availability of raw materials and, the low extraction in addition to transportation costs. The Bahr Al-Najaf region is abundant with limestone rocks but lacks primary gypsum. An investigation had been carried out to identify the source of secondary gypsum as an alternative to primary gypsum. Twelve boreholes were drilled for a depth of 2 m, as the thickness of suitable secondary gypsum layer ranges from 1 to 1.5 m. The mineralogical study revealed the predominance of gypsum followed by quartz and calcite, with an average of 62.9%, 19.6% and 14.35%, respectively. The geochemical analysis revealed that the content of SO3 is appropriate and ranging from 41.92% to 32.89% with an average of 37.73%. The SO3 content is within an acceptable range. The mean abundance of the major oxides of the study area may be arranged as SO3 > CaO> SiO2> MgO> Al2O> Fe2O3. The insoluble residue was at an acceptable rate. The laboratory experiments for milling secondary gypsum with clinker has successfully proven the production of Portland cement that matches the limits of the Iraqi Quality Standard (IQS) No. 5 of 1984. Mendidih to Teluk Ewa) has given an idea for the review of stratigraphic succession of Kaki Bukit Formation (Lower Setul Member). The analysis is related to a sedimentology study, where the sedimentary sequences formed as a mixed siliciclastic–carbonate shallow marine system that combines the carbonate and silisiclastic deposits. Eight facies have been recognised such as (1) argillite facies, (2) interlayer of mudstone and limestone facies, (3) wavy stromatolites limestone facies, (4) linear stromatolites limestone facies, (5) heterolithic of mudstone-limestone facies, (6) shale facies, (7) massive limestone facies and (8) thrombolites limestone facies. Each facies are divided into four litostratigraphic units based on the evaluation from Malaysian Stratigraphic Nomenclature Committee (1997) and North American Stratigraphic Code 2005. (1) The clastic unit referring to the uppertmost part of Machinchang Formation maintains it's name. Meanwhile, the suggested nomenclature for the new units such as (2) The Sabung Member is referring to the basal carbonate unit comprising microbial facies and mixed silisiclastic-carbonate sediment. (3) The Pesak Seluar Member in the middle is a silisiclastic unit that consists of shale facies and (4) The Ewa Member at the top representing the upper limestone unit. All units show a similar litostratigraphic characteristics that are found in Tarutao Group, Pante Malaka Formation, Rung Nok Formation and Lae Tong Formation in Thailand as described by Wongwanich et al. The Miri oilfield was first discovered in 1910 and subsequently abandoned in 1972 with intermittent exploration activities in the late 1980’s to early 1990’s. To rejuvenate exploration interest and to identify remaining hydrocarbon potential of the study area, in 2009-2010 JX Nippon acquired gravity, then regional 2D seismic data, followed-by exploration well drilling from 2011-2014. This paper discusses the social-environmental impacts and concerns associated with these petroleum exploration activities, from acquisition of seismic where explosives and vibroseis were used as a source of propagating signals, to exploration drilling with petroleum chemicals such as water-based muds used to facilitate the drilling operations. Overall, the inquiry addresses operational challenges, security of explosive storage and concern for handling explosives in the field, the social-environmental impacts of seismic acquisition operations, as well as removal of drilling fluid chemicals and disposal of contaminated cuttings. Containment procedures and mitigation measures undertaken to alleviate these social-environmental impacts are discussed according to the guidelines and regulatory requirements provided by the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), in conjunction with PETRONAS Procedures and Guidelines for Upstream Activities (PPGUA) and the company’s Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Management System. In the final analysis, significant environmental and social challenges were certainly encountered while planning and conducting petroleum exploration activities in the study area. These challenges include problems related to topographic variabilities, permitting issues, compensations for affected lands and cash crops; layout constraints, drilling operations, well control measures for blowout prevention, traffic controls, potential damage to infra-structures, explosive and equipment transportation. However, with proper planning, effective communication with the local authorities, and awareness sessions conducted for the affected parties and stakeholders; together with the support of the local communities the operations have not only managed to mitigate these social and environmental concerns, the exploration activities also provided economic benefits such as hotel accommodation, logistics and transportation demands for local businesses, and short-term employment opportunities for the local people. Ultimately, the operations successfully acquired nearly 900-line km of seismic across many villages, longhouses, and in the city areas, with four exploration wells were drilled in the exploration block. We are glad to report that both seismic and drilling operations were conducted successfully and safely with minimal interruptions to people and environment, without untoward incidents or spills. Detailed stratigraphic columns are presented with special emphasis on the sedimentary sequences, providing insights into the depositional environments. The rocks are comprised mostly of sandstone, claystone and a mix of both lithologies, and are piled up in cycles of coarsening upward successions, which are here interpreted as parasequences. Most sections are characterized by abundant and diverse sedimentary structures, reworked fossiliferous deposits and organic fragments such as ambers and wood remains. Certain beds are rich in fossils: among the macrofossils, the most common are bivalves, gastropods and followed by fish remains (teeth and otholiths), crustaceans, corals and echninoderms, which are abundant at specific locations. Among the microfossils, the most common are foraminifera, which are mostly dominated by either rotaliids or textulariids; the most common genera are Ammonia, Elphidium and Trochammina. Porcelaneous and planktonic foraminifera are rare. Ostracods are also found. Ichnofossils are quite abundant in all sections but are represented mostly by Ophiomorpha and Thalassinoides. In view of the observations, the sections are interpreted as evidence of shallow-marine conditions, in which wave, fluvial and tidal actions strongly influenced the depositional environment. In a few cases, deposition of sediment seems to reflect the transition from wave-dominated to tide-dominated conditions. Our findings indicate that in such shallow marine deposits, the interpretation of sediment type and sedimentary structures alone cannot indicate one specific sedimentary environment, but such observations should include palaeontological evidence to generate more accurate palaeoenvironmental reconstructions.
