Further, the National Diabetes Statistics Report for 2020 states that cases of diabetes have risen to 34.2 million, with 1.5 million new cases annually. Another alarming trend is the rise in insulin costs, making it difficult for many Americans to afford treatment. The American Journal of Managed Care indicates that the price for a vial of insulin rocketed from $21 in 1996 to $275 in 2019, which appears to be a crisis in the making. In relation to these trends, this research tracks adverse event reports for insulin and insulin pumps. The FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database reveals that adverse event reports for insulin from 2018 to 2021 show a steady decrease in the number of incidents. Similarly, the FDA Manufacturer and User Facility Device Experience (MAUDE) database indicates a decrease in incident reports for common insulin pumps within the same time period. There are two possible explanations for this counterintuitive trend. Since it is highly unlikely based on the data that there are fewer diabetics using insulin, there could be a decrease of usage based on the economics of acquiring insulin and related devices. The other possible explanation is that the advent and rapid adoption of continuous glucose monitoring devices has allowed patients to better regulate their insulin intake, leading to lower levels of usage. Further studies will be needed to determine root causes of these trends.","PeriodicalId":394576,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 8th World Congress on New Technologies","volume":"93 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125175854","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Plastics are the main sources of environmental pollution, however, their global demand and production continues to increase. Geosynthetic materials are commonplace sources of soil pollution. The primary recipients of geotextiles are environmental engineering, agriculture, and horticulture, where they are used for drainage, filtration, erosion protection, separation, reinforcement, retention, and mulching. Unfortunately, although they have numerous advantages, they pose a significant burden for the environment , particularly because a vast majority of them is produced from synthetic fibres. As a result, it is desirable to seek and apply alternative solutions that take into account the current environmental challenges. One of the methods of managing a sustainable economy is to develop technologies are based on biodegradable materials, including waste. The paper describes a sustainable technology of water storage in soil, which was tested in the actual field conditions. Water absorbing geocomposites (WAG) are an innovative technology that supports sustainable water management and plant vegetation. WAG are used successfully, among others, in agriculture and environmental engineering. The basic version of the WAG consists of a nonwoven geotextile, internal skeleton structure, and superabsorbent polymer (SAP). The permeable nonwoven fabric absorbs water from the environment and transports it to the interior of the WAG, where it is stored in the SAP. The skeleton structure is a spatial grid that captures the loads and creates a free space for the swelling of SAP. This study investigated a new biodegradable version of a water-absorbing geocomposite (BioWAG).","PeriodicalId":394576,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 8th World Congress on New Technologies","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128513534","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Estimates speak of a threefold amount of plastics in the year 2050 compared to today. The effect of these particles on aquatic organisms is relatively well mapped, but their effect on plants remains still poorly understood [1]. Plants are the key part of entire human population diet. Microplastics and nanoplastics are known to bind and concentrate harmful chemicals from the environment (POP, toxins, pesticides, PCB etc.), [2]. They increase stress too and especially in plants, they bind to the surface of root fibers [3]. It is estimated that there is such plastic pollution in European agriculture soil as in the North Pacific gyrus [4]. In this study, we have analyzed the effect of bacteria-sized particles on Arabidopsis thaliana , peas ( Pisum sativum L.) and maize ( Zea mays L.) in hydroponic cultivation which eliminates the influence of soil and soil microbiota. The procedure with trifluoroacetic acid was used for the synthesis of PET microparticles (MPs), [5]. Luminescent quantum dots (QDs) are ideal luminophores for multiplexed optical coding because their fluorescence emission band position can be continuously tuned by changing the particle size. The absorption and emission spectra are regarded as properties of the material and are normally independent of the light intensity. However, for sufficiently large light intensities, such as those available with femtosecond lasers, these optical characteristics additionally become functions of the light intensity. The quantum confinement and dielectric confinement effects make these materials a promising class of third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) media with large third-order nonlinear susceptibilities and a fast response time. The colloidal syntheses presented here allow the fabrication of morphology well-defined, monodisperse in size semiconductor QDs, QRs, or quantum nanoplatelets (NPLs). In the literature current studies are primarily the NLO properties measured usually at a single wavelength. We studied the nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of several quantum-confined semiconductors with various morphologies, i.e. quantum QDs, QRs and NPLs. The NLO properties of the samples were measured by the Z-scan and two-photon excited emission (TPEE) techniques using a femtosecond laser system in a wide spectra range. Here, we show the NLO factors in a wide wavelength range to find maximal values of the parameters","PeriodicalId":394576,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 8th World Congress on New Technologies","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130650512","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This research investigates the safety and performance of a life-saving cardiovascular medical device when one manufacturer monopolises the market. The Abiomed Impella(R) heart pump provides hemodynamic support for the heart. As there are no other manufacturers of similar devices, Abiomed maintains a monopoly on these medical devices. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Manufacturer and Use Facility Device Experience (MAUDE) database lists adverse events for medical devices, and provides insights into adverse event types and occurrences. This study analysed adverse events, including deaths, injuries, and malfunctions, for Abiomed Impella(R) devices from 2008 to 2021. The data reveal a striking increase in reported malfunctions over the decade from 2011 to 2021, during which annual malfunctions rose nine-fold from 10 to 90. Of the 285 total malfunctions reported for Abiomed Impella(R) devices in the decade 2011 to 2021, almost one-third of malfunctions occurred in 2021. Reported injuries for Abiomed Impella(R) devices rose even more dramatically, from one annual injury to 374 annual injuries between 2008 and 2021. Reported deaths for Abiomed Impella(R) devices also rose from 2 annual deaths to 17 annual deaths between 2012,and 2021. Most concerning, many patient deaths were misreported as injuries or malfunctions. Only 33% of deaths associated with Abiomed Impella(R) devices were accurately reported as deaths. These results highlight the need for continuous improvement and transparent reporting for medical devices; it can mean the difference between life and death.","PeriodicalId":394576,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 8th World Congress on New Technologies","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126735826","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the production of these components depends on the substrate where the fungus grows. The present work aims to evaluate the effect of the growth medium of Fusarium oxysporum in the synthesis of cadmium sulfide nanoparticles (CdS-NPs). The fungal biomass was obtained from a growth medium with nitrogenous components of higher and lower complexity (MGYP and DS respectively) and used for the synthesis of CdS-NPs using cadmium nitrate (Cd (NO 3 ) 2 *4H 2 O) and elemental sulfur (S°). CdS-NPs exhibit two absorbance bands at 320 and 450 nm, with a fluorescence emission at 520 nm when excited with a wavelength at 365 nm. Transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction confirmed the presence of CdS-NPs with a mean diameter of 4.7 ± 0.7 and 4.9 ± 0.9 nm when MGYP and S media were used for biomass production, as well as atomic columns of CdS-NPs with A similar crystalline structure. However, it was also possible to appreciate fewer CdS-NPs when using the fungal biomass obtained from DS medium, which was confirmed by spectrophotometry through the absorption and emission bands at 450 and 520 nm.","PeriodicalId":394576,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 8th World Congress on New Technologies","volume":"278 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133384450","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The primordial role of water can be related to its unique physical properties particularly due to the structure of its hydrogen bond network or its dipolar moment. In extreme confinement situation, such as inside nanoscale channels, important modifications of these features are expected. Thus, many theoretical predicted that confined water in extremely small diameter pores exhibits unusual phase behavior[1] and structure compared to bulk water. Thanks to their stiffness, hydrophobic smooth surface and high aspect ratio, Single Wall Carbon Nanotubes (SWCNT) can be considered as a model nanochannel to get insight into the confinement of water molecules. Due to the content of iron oxides in the fly ash, zeolites synthesized from ash also contain iron in various forms [1,2]. The presence of iron and traces of other metals in FA transferred into zeolites, contributes to the better catalytic performance of the catalysts, based on these zeolites, in oxidation reactions. Catalytic performance of FA zeolites can be improved further by loading of different novel metal species on the zeolite surface [3]. In the present study, by using of a two-stage process of zeolite synthesis (fusion and hydrothermal treatment) zeolite X has been synthesized from FA. The same amount of iron, which is contented in the FA zeolite, was loaded on the reference sample synthesized from pure chemicals in order to be compared with it. Both samples were modified with platinum and the catalytic activity for benzene, toluene and hexane oxidation of the obtained samples was investigated (Fig. 1). That may cause an increase of metal amounts in herbivore food, host plant, among the others, in the hyperaccumulators of cadmium. Various environmental factors such as short period of starvation and metal exposure may affect differently detoxification processes in insects. The one of the indicative of metal toxicity may be oxidative stress, and enhanced cost of antioxidant defence. Glutathione is the main thiol in living cells. It plays an important role in antioxidant defense. About 90% is present in reduced form. Excessive oxidation can result in the formation of more disulfide, oxidized glutathione [1]. In a study carried out on Spodoptera exigua , the activity of the detoxifying enzyme glutathione S-transferase was checked in larvae from the first and second generation of these insects treated with zinc and cadmium added to the medium. Increase in the activity of the GST enzyme in the fat body and Malpighi tubules caused by zinc and its reduction under the influence of cadmium have been observed [2].
