Chilean Legislation (Supreme Decree N°248/2007) establishing the concept of tailings as a finely ground solid, which is discarded in mining operations, and it is not considered a hazardous waste. For a long time, due to the lack of regulations, mine tailings were stored without major environmental consideration; therefore, at present, several abandoned impoundments are located near population centres. In 2004 the Supreme Decree N°132 modified the Mining Safety Regulations by incorporating regulations on the closure of mining operations, forcing, for the first time, to the mining companies to execute a closure plan at the end of their production phase including the closure of tailings impoundments.","PeriodicalId":394576,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 8th World Congress on New Technologies","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128724968","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Italy was among the first European countries to ban asbestos, with Law 257/1992, and was among the first to issue technical sector regulations for the protection of workers and living environments. The technical characteristics of this substance, together with its low cost, led to the creation of different mixtures and the processing and production of over three thousand types of products containing asbestos with content varying from 10% to 99% in weight. These products included Asbestos Cement Pipes (ACPs), used for decades for civil and military purposes. ACP are not in themselves a primary source of danger to public health when underground, intact and still in place, insofar as the main asbestos-related health risk is inhalation. Cement asbestos pipes can however generate situations of risk when they are subject to removal or maintenance that involves their partial or total exposure to ambient air with the possible dispersion of fibres into the air. The paper shows a systematic set of procedures and indications to be followed for the safe removal of underground pipes in ACM in order to ensure maximum protection of workers and the living environment surrounding the area of operations. These procedures may be subject to periodic updating on the base of feedback following their application. These procedures were developed because of the need to provide precise guidelines of national reference, due to a lack of specific sector regulations.","PeriodicalId":394576,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 8th World Congress on New Technologies","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126418609","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Rivers are the major transport pathways of microplastics to reach the marine environment. Understanding how microplastics are distributed horizontally and vertically in rivers is a requirement to assessing the risks associated with microplastic abundance. This study aims to investigate the effect of flow characteristics on the transport of microplastics and identify transport of these particles mechanistically between a tributary and main stream of the Ergene River, Turkey using mass-balance and hydrodynamic equations. For this purpose, Corlu tributary of the Ergene River was chosen as the study area. River samples were collected from the six stations of the Ergene River including Corlu tributary and upstream and downstream of the outfall of this tributary in September 2020. Fifteen litres of water sample were collected from the water surface of each sampling station using stainless-steel buckets and transferred to glass bottles. Additionally, the parameters including flow rate (m s -1 ) and stream depth (m) of the river were measured using Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler instrument. After removing organic matter, the collected water samples were filtered onto a plankton mesh with 45 µm pore size. Microplastic particles were visually identified under stereo-microscope (Olympus SZX 16, 30x) and transferred to a clean cellulose filter paper, previously checked for airborne contamination. Microplastic particles were photographed and counted by the help of ImageJ software.","PeriodicalId":394576,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 8th World Congress on New Technologies","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126598524","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

[1] So, platforms for their removal by applying new efficient, sustainable, and low-cost wastewater treatment technologies, should be developed. Among various approaches, the adsorption could be considered suitable to remove ECs, avoiding the release of other pollutants usually arisen from chemical treatments. More specifically, a patented adsorbent material, developed at University of Turin (Italy), based on cyclodextrin polymers was selected during this work. [2] It consists of positively charged cross-linked mixture of cyclodextrins. As first step, the chemical and physical characterization of the adsorbent was performed by adopting several complementary techniques.
