This paper presents physics-based simulation modelling for predicting the thermal field solution and molten pool geometry in laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) process for Ti6Al4V, SS316L, and IN625 metal powders. Two-dimensional (2D) thermal field on the powder bed surface along the laser path and the hatch direction are computed for a moving laser heat source using implicit numerical formulation to understand the temperature rise during L-PBF process. The temperature field into the powder is computed using the temperature solution obtained along the laser path. The results are compared against the literature to corroborate the computed molten pool geometry. This numerical solution approach is found to be highly practical for computing thermal fields and suitable for digital twin development in metal additive manufacturing.","PeriodicalId":39429,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Mechatronics and Manufacturing Systems","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66752820","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the complexity of such a system has posed significant challenges for traditional quality engineering methods, especially in monitoring and diagnosis of system performance. The traditional practices for monitoring or controlling multistage systems either treat each stage as an individual entity or model all stages as a whole. The formal approach mainly focuses on the most critical stages while ignores information from the other stages. In contrast, the latter approach attempts to build one model to account for all stages. In a complex production system, this latter approach is impractical, if not impossible. This research provides a control strategy by proposing an intelligent process monitoring system for high dimensional multistage processes using predictive models built from historical data. A repository dataset is used to demonstrate the implementation of the proposed framework.","PeriodicalId":39429,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Mechatronics and Manufacturing Systems","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48472145","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper we suggest that the established metaphor of layering is insufficient to capture the diverse ways in which PSS can be differentiated for, and by, consumers. Responding to this issue, we develop a new framework that centres on the distinction between different modes of horizontal product differentiation, including static, dynamic, compository and user-journey differentiation. Using a design science research (DSR) approach, the framework is applied to two case studies of prototype PSS that use augmented reality to connect physical goods to digital services. Building on this analysis, we argue that the uncovered aspects of differentiation should be further investigated in the management literature and that the existing metaphor of layers should be superseded by a more suitable one.","PeriodicalId":39429,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Mechatronics and Manufacturing Systems","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41894014","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

EHA was widely used in industries due to the increased efficiency, reduced leakages and lower overall weight. This paper reviewed the development of EHA from three aspects. The existing types of EHA were classified according to possible configurations, and their development processes were shown correspondingly. And publications related to design methods were reviewed. There were some issues like the parameter uncertainties and nonlinearities for EHA control system, the accuracy of the mathematical model and the effectiveness of the control strategy were analyzed. The review concluded by summarising the scope for further research trends in the area of system configurations, design methods and control technologies. The EHAs based on linear actuator is becoming a research hotspot because of its good dynamic performance.","PeriodicalId":39429,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Mechatronics and Manufacturing Systems","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48753701","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper shows through a study of UK-based food and beverage manufacturers that the application of Industry 4.0 activities is mostly tactical, and thereby decoupled from the firms' business models (BM). This stems from a lack of strategic envisioning on the impact of Industry 4.0 on their entire businesses, and the prevalent efficiency-oriented corporate cultures. Findings indicate that firms need to continuously innovate their business model in order to implement I4.0. Thereby, two principles are key in adopting advanced mechatronics: (1) to granularly segment customer needs; and (2) to enhance the flexibility of value adding activities. These two principles are mutually interdependent and hence an integrated approach through continuous business model innovation will enable manufacturers to be more responsive to individual customer needs; transforming their make-and-sell BM into sense-and-act BM.","PeriodicalId":39429,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Mechatronics and Manufacturing Systems","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43236761","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This process is time-consuming while automated operations with industrial robots can be a more efficient solution. This paper describes the development of such an automated bolt-nut pair painting system for a small parts assembly line. In this paper, a low-cost and flexible solution for automated bolt-nut pair painting using a painting dabber and machine vision system is proposed. A Sense 2 camera is used to capture the 3D model of the parts, and an ABB industrial robot YuMi is programmed to implement the painting automatically. A specific nozzle for the dabber is designed to apply paint on bolt-nut pairs. The results shows that the location of every bolt-nut pair is found successfully, and the accuracy of the normal vectors is enough for robot-assisted painting work.","PeriodicalId":39429,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Mechatronics and Manufacturing Systems","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49015133","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
