During the excavation work on the southern, Slovenian tube, a change in the geology became apparent after the first 2800 m of excavation. Therefore, the support systems had to be adapted according to the new conditions. The construction company selected Omega-Bolt expandable friction bolts for further installation to control squeezing rock conditions. Metro Line 6 connects the north of the city to the existing metro network further South. The construction of Line 6 currently represents the largest infrastructure project in Latin America, combining the excavation of tunnel boring machine (TBM) and conventional tunnels, cut-and-cover stations and a number of deep emergency exit shafts. This paper presents the main features of the TBM tunnel excavated in the South stretch through the Tertiary soils of the São Paulo Basin and through the challenging Embu Complex, which consists of a mixture of fractured rock, saprolite and residual soils. It is being delivered by Riverlinx CJV on behalf on Transport for London (TfL). The overall project consists of tunnel approach ramps at both portals, cut and cover tunnels, and two 1.1 km-long bored tunnel sections as well as highway connections including a new footbridge and service buildings for operating the tunnel from either end. In this article, the approach and challenges of mechanised tunnelling including the river crossing in a high-density area, with a large-diameter earth pressure balance (EPB) machine in mixed-face conditions, are presented. The Tunnel Bori selection based on the geological and geotechnical information is evaluated and compared to the experience during execution of tunnelling.
