{"title":"Microfluidic synthesis enables highly dispersed Ru/ZrPO<sub>4</sub> catalyst for hydrodeoxygenation of lignin-derived phenolic compounds","authors":"Riyang Shu, Guangming Liang, Yuankai Lin, Yu Chen, Zhipeng Tian, Chao Wang, Jingtao Zhang, Qiyu Liu, Ying Xu","doi":"10.59717/j.xinn-energy.2026.100130","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.59717/j.xinn-energy.2026.100130","url":null,"abstract":"<p>To address the demand for efficient hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of lignin-derived phenolic compounds into high-value hydrocarbon fuels, this study designed and synthesized highly dispersed Ru/ZrPO<sub>4</sub> catalysts by employing a novel microfluidic technology coupled with ethylene glycol thermal reduction. The traditional impregnation (Ru/ZrPO<sub>4</sub>-IMP) and the hydrothermal method (Ru/ZrPO<sub>4</sub>-HYD) were also conducted to compare with the microfluidic method (Ru/ZrPO<sub>4</sub>-MIC). Comprehensive characterizations via XRD, TEM, XPS, H<sub>2</sub>-TPD and NH<sub>3</sub>-TPD reveal that Ru/ZrPO<sub>4</sub>-MIC presents superior properties of small average Ru particle size (3.03 nm), excellent metal dispersion, outstanding hydrogen dissociation capability and suitable acid strength, which improve the HDO performance significantly. Under mild reaction condition (240 °C, 1 MPa H<sub>2</sub>), the Ru/ZrPO<sub>4</sub>-MIC achieves complete conversion of guaiacol and 97.9% selectivity toward cyclohexane, significantly outperforming the Ru/ZrPO<sub>4</sub>-IMP (47.4%) and Ru/ZrPO<sub>4</sub>-HYD (79.7%) catalysts, as well as most of the reported catalysts. Comparative studies confirm that the microfluidic approach effectively prevents metal agglomeration and enhances metal dispersion. Ru/ZrPO<sub>4</sub>-MIC catalyst also presents a high stability after 5 recycles, with little catalytic activity loss. Moreover, in the HDO upgrading of lignin oil, hydrocarbon content increases from 10.5% to 91.8%. {"title":"Bridging education and service through open and distance learning model: a study of armed forces learners","authors":"Iqbal Husain","doi":"10.1108/aaouj-03-2025-0040","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1108/aaouj-03-2025-0040","url":null,"abstract":"Purpose The Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) Niche-1 is a specialised programme that Bangladesh Open University (BOU) offers. Between 2014 and 2024, over 48,000 soldiers from the Bangladesh army were enrolled in this programme, with an average pass rate of 90.86% over the past decade. The main aim of this study is to evaluate the impact of the HSC Niche-1 programme, focusing on professional, socioeconomic, and academic development of the soldiers. Design/methodology/approach A mixed-methods research design was followed, using both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. To gather qualitative insights, 225 graduated learners participated in structured interviews, while 25 participants participated in three focus group discussions (FGDs). Findings A substantial number of participants reported that the programme has positively influenced their personal, professional and social lives. This has played a crucial role in securing current employment by improving their service performance. Additionally, the programme has created valuable job opportunities for participants after retirement. The study shows that the HSC Niche-1 programme is contributing to the professional development of armed forces personnel and supporting the country’s economic growth. Research limitations/implications The cantonment of the Bangladesh Army and the Bangladesh Navy or Air Force base are highly restricted areas. It was challenging to stay there or collect data for any study. The researcher contacted the appropriate personnel and requested their assistance gathering information regarding the Niche-1 programme. They cited institutional restrictions, security concerns and military secrecy as the main reasons for their refusal to assist. Then the researcher presented his FGD checklist and survey questionnaire. Upon evaluation, they made some modifications and verbally consented to collect data on the Niche-1 programme. However, they were overly concerned about any written document. They did not put their signatures on the attendance sheet in FGD sessions. The researcher was also aware of all sorts of sensitivities. Originality/value This study contributes to the growing inclusive and flexible learning dialogue. The HSC Niche-1 programme is different from the traditional educational framework and it can bridge the gap between service commitment and the academic development of armed forces soldiers. Quantitative data were collected using questionnaires administered to 512 SMEs, and hypotheses were analyzed employing structural equation modeling. The results demonstrate that entrepreneurial resilience, entrepreneurial self-efficacy, and entrepreneurial orientation have a direct positive impact on the performance of SMEs. Entrepreneurial resilience functions as a partial mediator between entrepreneurial orientation and external environmental factors, thereby influencing the performance of SMEs. Entrepreneurial self-efficacy serves as a full mediator between external environmental factors and SMEs performance. The study illustrates the significance of entrepreneurial resilience and entrepreneurial self-efficacy as key psychological mediating factors, integrating entrepreneurial orientation and contextual conditions to enhance SMEs' performance. The Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana was launched by Govt. of India on 11th October 2014. Under this scheme, each MP needs to adopt a Gram Panchayat and looks after its holistic development by giving importance to infrastructural development in the selected Gram Panchayats. The scheme mainly focuses on improving the living standards of rural people by providing them with better facilities. But from the literature review, it was found that the implementation of this scheme in J&K has not come up to the expectations of people as it has failed to expedite work on projects in identified gram panchayats for different reasons. (Choudhary, 2022) In J&K, different Gram Panchayats in different blocks of thirteen districts were selected to develop as “Saansad Adarsh Grams”. Out of these thirteen districts, eight are in the Kashmir division and five are in the Jammu division. For the present study, Jammu district was selected for conducting the research. The present paper adopted Descriptive Research as a research design. The present study is based on a mixed method approach i.e., quantitative and qualitative methods. Both primary and secondary sources were consulted for data collection. For the purpose of conducting a primary study, a survey method was used. Jammu District was selected for conducting the study. Four categories of respondents were selected: including Household respondents, BDOs, MPs, and Sarpanches. Data collected from different respondents were analyzed through appropriate statistical tools and techniques. New research focuses on technologies such as virtual reality and music therapy, as well as on practices like family presence during and after ICU stays, open-door policies, and monitoring of both family members and healthcare personnel. Psychiatric disorders, including depression, post-traumatic stress, anxiety, and delirium, are prevalent in ICU survivors and contribute to post-ICU syndrome. This research aimed to determine the role of humanization in critical care, with a secondary objective of evaluating the impact of open-door policies on critically ill patients. Analyses, results tables, and conclusions are presented. Humanization encompasses improvements and new associated concepts such as end-of-life care, personalized ICU-VIP care, and virtual reality in the ICU. Flexibility is crucial to address all factors that affect long-term neuropsychiatric outcomes. Matthias Alexander set out as a ‘natural elocutionist’ (Alexander, 1995, p. 3), little could he have guessed what lay ahead—that in his search for a sore throat cure he had hit upon a new and thoroughly practical understanding of how the human being functions as an integrated whole and to a technique for ‘The development of the control of human reaction’ (Alexander, 2000, p. 88). Central to the way the Alexander Technique is framed is the concept of habits of thought or action as some kind of chain reaction of associated events—one giving rise to the next, and so on. It is well-documented that around 1900 Alexander became acquainted with William James’ book, Principles of Psychology. James’ theory of habit provided a sound theoretical basis for Alexander’s empirical discoveries.1 As with any new theory, James built on the ideas of oth­ers. This article traces ideas from the eighteenth-century English physician David Hartley—the acknowledged founder of associationism—through to Alexander and the present day.
