It explores Macdonald’s attempt to create a Great Labour Party modelled on the Great Liberal Party of the nineteenth century. This was a party which had national and cross-class appeal uniting many sections of society, including intellectuals, behind a progressive alternative. The critics of Macdonald argued that class interest and class struggle should be the basis of Labour politics. Macdonald started a profound debate over the purpose and strategy of Labour which has recurred in every period of the party’s history.","PeriodicalId":393570,"journal":{"name":"The Western Ideology and Other Essays","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-04-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132116463","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It examines the different paradigms which have defined economic liberalism in the past, and the particular novel features of neo-liberalism, and its various strands, including the Austrian school, Ordo-liberalism, economic libertarianism, public choice, monetarism, and supply side economics. It looks at some of the deep roots of neo-liberalism in ideas about the relationship between households, states and markets, and how this relates to its ideas about the company as a corporate household and the state as a public household. The theory of the tax state became a key component of both economic liberalism and neo-liberalism in the twentieth century.","PeriodicalId":393570,"journal":{"name":"The Western Ideology and Other Essays","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-04-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114440988","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It discusses the importance of the Soviet Union for Marxists and socialists as a living demonstration, however flawed, of the possibility of an alternative to capitalism. It argues that a future for Marxism as an intellectual tradition depends on its ability to transcend the historicism and realism which characterised Marxism-Leninism and return to its classical roots as a critique of political economy, which analyses the forces which engender social injustice and inequality. The continuing insight of Marxist analyses can be seen in recent work on the state, accumulation, regulation, hegemony, globalisation and social reproduction.","PeriodicalId":393570,"journal":{"name":"The Western Ideology and Other Essays","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-04-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131602230","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
