The objective was to study the efficacy of VCO processing method in reducing blood glucose level, cholesterol profile and pancreatic tissue profile of diabetic mellitus (DM) Sprague dawley rats. Four rat groups from five rat groups were injected using alloxan to induce the diabetic condition, while the rest was negative control. VCO-A produced without heat and VCO-B produced with controlled-heat treatment and Coconut Cooking Oil (RBD-CNO) produced with the application of severe heating and chemical (MG) were fed respectively to three rat groups, while the other two rat groups were fed by water and used as negative control (healthy rats) and positive control (DM rats). During 28 days observation, all of the rats blood glucose level were assessed, and at the end of the observation day the rats were terminated to assess the cholesterol and pancreatic tissues profile. VCO-A significantly positive reduced blood glucose level than the others. VCO did not influence DM rats cholesterol profile and all VCO inhibits the rate of pancreatic β cells damage. The extract oil from fruits (Buah Merah oil) contains rich in lipids, carotenoids and vitamin E. We assessed the effects of Buah Merah oil on melanogenesis in B16 melanoma cells. In the presence of alphamelanocyte stimulating hormone (α-MSH), B16 melanoma cells are stimulated to enhance melanin synthesis. Buah Merah oil inhibited α-MSH-induced melanin synthesis with no cytotoxicity. This decrease in melanogenesis was correlated with reduced enzyme activity and decreased protein expression levels of tyrosinase. Tyrosinase is a type 1 membrane glycoprotein that is the critical ratelimiting enzyme involved in melanin synthesis. Furthermore, the Buah Merah oilinduced decrease in melanin content was accompanied by a decrease in the amount and activity of tyrosinase whereas the mRNA level of tyrosinase was unchanged. Moreover, treatment with proteasome inhibitor MG132 blocked the down-regulation of melanogenesis by Buah Merah oil. Immunoprecipitation analysis also revealed that treatment with Buah Merah oil modulated the ubiquitination of tyrosinase, that is Buah Merah oil increased the amount of ubiquitinatedtyrosinase. Salah satu jenis rumput laut yang potensil untuk dikembangkan adalah Kappaphycus alvarezii untuk produksi karaginan. Untuk mendukung upaya tersebut dilakukan penelitian Pengaruh konsentrasi KOH dan waktu alkalisasi serta umur panen K. alvarezii terhadap karakteristik mutu karaginan murni. Perlakuan yang diamati meliputi umur panen K. alvarezii (14 dan 30 hari), konsentrasi KOH (6%, 8% dan 10%), dan lama proses alkalisasi (1 dan 2 jam). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan nilai rendemen tertinggi diperoleh dengan perlakuan konsentrasi KOH 8%, lama proses ekstraksi 1 jam, dan umur panen 30 hari, yaitu sebesar 48,34%. Nilai gel strength tertinggi diperoleh dengan perlakuan konsentrasi KOH 8%, ekstraksi 2 jam dan umur panen 30 hari, yaitu sebesar 868,56 g/cm 2 . Nilai viskositas tertinggi diperoleh dengan perlakuan konsentrasi KOH 8%, ekstraksi 2 jam dan umur panen 14 hari, yaitu sebesar 38,22 cps. Nilai derajat putih tertinggi diperoleh dengan perlakuan konsentrasi KOH 8%, ekstraksi 2 jam dan umur panen 30 hari, yaitu sebesar 69,11%.
