Croatian society belongs to the group of countries with the highest proportion of elderly people in the population. Elderly people are in multiple vulnerable positions, which significantly affects their quality of life. Since care for the elderly is becoming more and more relevant, the aging of the population is an important issue for social policies. In addition to the state, other stakeholders such as civil society participate in providing care and increasing the quality of life of the elderly population. This paper aims to show the contribution of civil society organizations to the quality of life of the elderly. Qualitative research was conducted, using the method of interviews with key informants (10) from associations in the city of Zagreb that operate in the field of elderly people. Through the framework analysis, six topics were determined, five of which related to the dimensions of the quality of life of the elderly (standard of living, health, functionality, social inclusion, and acess to rights and skills), and the last one to the challenges of organizations in working with the elderly, and the categories and codes presented in work. The research showed that associations, according to the assessments of its employees, through programs and activities in various aspects contribute to the quality of life and have benefits for the elderly. In this regard, civil society can also be recognized as a stakeholder in the welfare mix.","PeriodicalId":39267,"journal":{"name":"Sociologija i Prostor","volume":"92 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141694070","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cultural scenes are dynamic and constantly evolving networks of social actors who share a common interest or identity. Institutional isomorphism is the process by which organizations adopt similar structures and practices to gain legitimacy and support. The research tried to determine their level of intercultural sensitivity and the correlation between intercultural sensitivity and their activities in leisure time. In addition, an attempt was made to determine the contribution of leisure activities to their level of intercultural sensitivity. The results of the research showed that the research participants show highly developed intercultural sensitivity and that they mostly show a constructive attitude towards their own leisure time. Furthermore, it was determined that there is statistically significant correlation between the level of intercultural sensitivity and some activities in leisure time. In the end, it can be determined that the set of examined activities in leisure time contributes to the explanation of 16.9% (F=4.952; p<.05) of the variance of the criteria, i.e. the level of intercultural sensitivity. In this explanation, the activities of hanging out with friends, researching topics of personal interest, writing and/or drawing, going to cinemas, museums, theatres, exhibitions, concerts and the like, and lazing around are highlighted as a statistically significant.","PeriodicalId":39267,"journal":{"name":"Sociologija i Prostor","volume":"23 12","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141704702","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Particular focus is on settlements near the Kupa in the City of Vrbovsko region, compared to particular settlements on the Slovenian border side of the Kupa River in the Črnomelj Municipality. Interdisciplinary approach is employed, combining various scientific methods, including archive research (analysis of marriage registers), qualitative analysis (method of semi-structured interviews), and analysis of population census of settlements by the Kupa River. The research observes the period between 1880 and 2023, while registers are examined in the period from 1858 and 1948, since those from the later period are not held in the Croatian State Archive, but in registry offices and parish offices, and are unavailable to broader public. Registers from the Slovenian side are also not included, since the older ones are in Ljubljana, while the newer ones are in registry and parish offices, and are not open to broader public.","PeriodicalId":39267,"journal":{"name":"Sociologija i Prostor","volume":"13 11","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141710453","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this context, this article discusses differences in the intensity of the social reception of “cancel culture” between the North American and European hemispheres that became visible through social movements in 2020. The article is a descriptive analysis carried out using the desk research method. Castell’s concept of the internet society paradigmatically frames the article as it justifies a simultaneous analysis and description of the intensity of new social movements in two hemispheres. Differences were found in the reception of new social movements in the European and North American hemispheres through an analysis of the demolition of statues of Christopher Columbus, while the situation in Southeast Europe was analysed in order to find the territorial limits of the reception of new social movements. Christopher Columbus was chosen as a relevant historic figure because he connects the North American and European hemispheres through the collective memory concept, while Southeast Europe was relevant for the analysis because of the expected enlargement of the EU to that region. The analysis corroborated the differences in the collective memory related to the historic figure of Christopher Columbus in the two hemispheres, as well as the limited reach of the new social movements in Southeast Europe. The obvious differences in the reception of new social movements in continental Europe give rise to some particular questions related to heritage protection policies in the EU and Southeast Europe. Furthermore, the examples of anomic heritage protection in Croatia, and controversies related to heritage production in North Macedonia suggest the emergence of a cultural parallax in the European hemisphere. The article suggests that this cultural parallax has implications for the credibility of the Treaty on European Union and the application of the Copenhagen criteria. In conclusion, it is argued that heritage protection policies should become mandatory in accession negotiations in future cycles of EU enlargement.","PeriodicalId":39267,"journal":{"name":"Sociologija i Prostor","volume":"2015 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141706976","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nevertheless, the assumption that ICT contributes to the feelings of loneliness and associated illnesses persists among some researchers and in everyday discourse. The paper explores the sociological understanding of sociality from the perspective of ICT use during the COVID-19 pandemic in Slovenia. The results of an online survey conducted in the autumn of 2020, with a random sample of 454 participants, indicated that despite the government-imposed restrictions on gatherings and physical interactions of individuals, social dynamics were maintained, albeit predominantly through ICT. Moreover, most respondents reported not experiencing greater loneliness during this period, probably owing to the preservation of their social contacts in cyberspace. It was also observed that the respondents engaged in different activities aimed at sustaining social interaction in cyberspace (i.e., telephone conversations, social media engagement, video calls), contributing to a reduced sense of isolation. The main objective of this paper is to reflect on contemporary social trends, positing that proximity in physical space is no longer a precondition for the emergence and maintenance of social dynamics between individuals.","PeriodicalId":39267,"journal":{"name":"Sociologija i Prostor","volume":"242 6‐7","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141692416","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Further, this paper explores Socrates’ and Plato’s belief that a polis (ancient city-state) was a significant social phenomenon, far more important than individuals’ well-being. Building upon this premise, the paper navigates the intricate relationship between individual and collective well-being within modern urban contexts. The thin line between hedonism and self-interest is investigated in the contemporary urban framework – that of an individualistic, consumerist, and materialistic world, with limited and shared spaces and resources. In conclusion, this paper advocates for a rethinking of the ancient Greek polis as a source of inspiration for reimagining urban futures, by integrating historical wisdom with contemporary urban planning practices to foster more equitable, sustainable, and fulfilling urban environments.","PeriodicalId":39267,"journal":{"name":"Sociologija i Prostor","volume":"265 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141708326","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
