Without using complicated three-dimensional positioning algorithms, we employ an existing two-dimensional positioning engine and equip the system with the capability of seamless positioning handoffs between different floors. The handoff process is triggered by monitoring the received signal strength indicator (RSSI) value observed by the RFID reader deployed in the stairway. The usefulness of the proposed system is verified by conducting an experiment in a campus building. What distinguishes our work from other related works is that we focus on the capability of seamless positioning handoffs between floors, whereas none in the literature mentioned this feature, which we regard as a key to improve user experiences.","PeriodicalId":391671,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on Broadband and Wireless Computing, Communication and Applications","volume":"112 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114250303","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It combines slow frequency-hopping and a TDMA scheme that utilizes a centralized a-priori slot allocation mechanism. In this paper we conduct a performance evaluation of the Wireless HART TDMA protocol and provide insights into the major factors impacting energy consumption. These insights provide valuable guidance on where to start with any effort geared towards saving energy. The main contributions of this paper are two folds: (i) We conduct a sensitivity analysis of the Wireless HART TDMA energy consumption parameters using the response surface methodology. Based on these results we determine the most influential parameters for the total energy consumption. (ii) We evaluate and discuss the impact of time synchronization and types of link scheduling algorithms on the performance of Wireless HART TDMA protocol.","PeriodicalId":391671,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on Broadband and Wireless Computing, Communication and Applications","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114375184","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The PFRF periodically calculates file access popularity to track the variation of users¡¦ access behaviour behaviors, and then replicates popular files to appropriate sites to adapt to the variation. We employ several types of file access behaviors, including Zipf-like, geometric, and uniform distributions, to evaluate PFRF. The simulation results show that PFRF can effectively improve average job turnaround time and data availability as compared with those of the tested algorithms.","PeriodicalId":391671,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on Broadband and Wireless Computing, Communication and Applications","volume":"110 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114542003","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Main problems in MAC layer of WSNs include sleep/wakeup scheduling and its overhead, collision and energy used for retransmission of collided frames. In this paper, an asynchronous and adaptive approach is proposed to design an energy-efficient multi-channel MAC protocol, named MAMAC, utilizing quorum system to extend network lifetime and increase network throughput. MAMAC is highly suitable for data collection applications. Simulations on the OPNET Modeler 14.0 manifest that the proposed protocol can prolong the network lifetime while increasing the network throughput.","PeriodicalId":391671,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on Broadband and Wireless Computing, Communication and Applications","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123689138","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Kernel-Based Channel Gain Estimation for Dynamic Spectrum Access in Cognitive Radio Networks","authors":"Po-Chiang Lin, Tsungnan Lin","doi":"10.1109/BWCCA.2011.36","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/BWCCA.2011.36","url":null,"abstract":"In order to achieve dynamic spectrum access in cognitive radio networks, the knowledge of all channel gains between stations is necessary. Conventional channel estimation methods require that a pair of stations tune to the same channel, and then estimate the channel gain by transmitting some pilot signals. These methods are thus time-consuming and inefficient in multi-user cognitive radio networks. Moreover, wireless channels are affected by the small-scale fading. A one-time sample of a channel gain is thus noisy, and the small-scale fading would lead to estimation errors. In this paper we propose a kernel-based channel gain estimation method. We adopt the support vector regression to build the knowledge between the location information of each station pair and the corresponding channel gain. Such a kernel-based method is noise-resistant and time-saving. We perform a real-world experiment to measure GSM signals, and use the measurement to evaluate the performance of the proposed channel gain estimation method. Experiment results show that the proposed method with sufficient training data could achieve the root mean square error of channel gain estimation as low as 2 dB.","PeriodicalId":391671,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on Broadband and Wireless Computing, Communication and Applications","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125526406","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

WMNs are based on mesh topology, in which every node is connected to one or more nodes, enabling thus the information transmission in more than one path. In this paper, we deal with the effects of mutation and crossover operators in GA for node placement problem. We evaluate the performance of the proposed system using different genetic operators and different distributions of router nodes considering giant component parameter. The simulation results show that for Exponential and Linear Ranking methods, the system has a good performance.","PeriodicalId":391671,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on Broadband and Wireless Computing, Communication and Applications","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124691754","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The major difference between VSN and ordinary sensor network is the large amount of data. In VSN, a large number of camera nodes form a distributed system which can be deployed in many potential applications. In this paper we present a model of the physical parameters of a visual sensor network to track large birds, such as Golden Eagle, in the sky. The developed model is used to optimize the placement of the camera nodes in the VSN. A camera node is modeled as a function of its field of view, which is derived by the combination of the lens focal length and camera sensor. From the field of view and resolution of the sensor, a model for full coverage between two altitude limits has been developed. We show that the model can be used to minimize the number of sensor nodes for any given camera sensor, by exploring the focal lengths that both give full coverage and meet the minimum object size requirement. For the case of large bird surveillance we achieve 100% coverage for relevant altitudes using 20 camera nodes per km2 for the investigated camera sensors.","PeriodicalId":391671,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on Broadband and Wireless Computing, Communication and Applications","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132758918","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They can also be viewed as a special case of wireless multi-hop Mobile Ad-hoc Networks (MANETs). The IETF group as well as the IEEE 802.11s working group have recommended applicability of several existing MANETs routing protocols for WMNs. However, in WMNs, client to client communications are through parent gateway via static routers, while in MANETs every arbitrary node pairs can act as source or destination. Therefore, it is of practical importance to re-evaluate MANETs routing protocols and make suitable modifications so that the protocols perform efficiently in WMNs environment. In this paper, we propose E-AODV, which is a variant of traditional Ad-hoc On-demand Distant Vector (AODV) routing, a protocol developed for MANETs. To evaluate E-AODV's performance and suitability in WMNs, a comparison of the protocol with traditional AODV and M-OLSR (a modified OLSR for WMNs), is carried out.","PeriodicalId":391671,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on Broadband and Wireless Computing, Communication and Applications","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134138742","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We implement cryptographic algorithms on a security chip that is embedded in a smart card. When the CPU clock changes the execution time and the energy consumption will thus change. The experimental results of this paper show that to reduce CPU clock effectively reduce the energy consumption, but that will make the execution time increase. From the viewpoint of power consumption, to reduce the CPU clock does not necessarily save the energy, moreover, an algorithm will need longer execution time. From the results, programmers could select suitable cryptographic algorithms following energy consumption, execution time, and security level desired.","PeriodicalId":391671,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on Broadband and Wireless Computing, Communication and Applications","volume":"142 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133982156","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In fact, although complex computational tasks still require server side resources, combination of rich content delivering devices, such as smart phones, together with wearable I/O devices and wireless broadband networking, can be used to seamlessly weave a mesh of client side and server side services. In this paper we describe how we leveraged such a set up to design and build a system capable of mitigating the negative effects of stress on the memorization capability of humans. Our system is able to capture user needs and to-dos, to infer where those needs and tasks can be efficiently fulfilled/performed and to provide timely and localized hints about the identified sweet-spots. Furthermore we evaluated innovative ways to drive the user to the most convenient site. We describe our system and a modular design both on the client and on the server sides, illustrating preliminary experiments performed both in laboratory and with real users, and we analyze the results.","PeriodicalId":391671,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on Broadband and Wireless Computing, Communication and Applications","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126592916","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
