At Chautauqua, they had a very large field class and they were both tired when they returned to Ithaca early in August of 1903. Henry had 33 classes in his summer term that year. He gave a course of lectures on spiders, which was very popular. Meanwhile, Anna's problem in the Chautauqua classes was a difficult one. The teachers had no background of science, and it seemed best to get each one in the class interested in some phase of nature that they could follow by themselves later. Anna found trees, ferns, birds, and butterflies adapted for this work. However, all the butterfly books were too advanced for use in these courses. As such, Anna besought her husband to write one with her. On November 13, 1903, she accepted the trusteeship of William Smith College.","PeriodicalId":391612,"journal":{"name":"The Comstocks of Cornell—The Definitive Autobiography","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116851447","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For a long time, Henry had struggled with the German language, in which so many treatises on zoology were written. He had finally concluded that a winter in Germany was necessary before he finished Part II of the textbook An Introduction to Entomology. Henry at once arranged for his university work under Rudolph Leuckart, the celebrated zoologist. Women were not admitted to the University of Leipsic at that time, but Professor Leuckart permitted Anna to attend one of his lectures, asking only that she came early and departed late—before and after the regular students. Back at Cornell University, after the Germany trip, the summer term of 1889 in entomology was well attended and Henry, as usual, enjoyed the summer teaching very much. He felt that leading his pupils to see the insects living in their natural environment was most important.","PeriodicalId":391612,"journal":{"name":"The Comstocks of Cornell—The Definitive Autobiography","volume":"46 5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114233043","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Henry lived with his Uncle Daniel when his mother became ill and was unable to do anything to support him. It was there that he had his first schooling. However, Henry had the misfortune to stammer in his speech and Uncle John undertook to break him of the habit by corporal punishment, a measure scarcely suited to the temperament of a highly nervous and sensitive child. In the summer of 1860, when he was eleven years old, Henry took a hand in his own destiny and decided to go see his mother, who was then living in Schenectady. Along the way, he met Captain Lewis Turner and his wife Rebecca, who took him in and offered him board and clothes and three months of winter schooling. Thus passed his boyhood, now that he had found a home which welcomed him and welcomed his mother when she could spare the time for a visit. In 1861, the Civil War came on and Henry was greatly affected by it. Two years later, he tried to enlist but was ruled out because of his youth and small stature.","PeriodicalId":391612,"journal":{"name":"The Comstocks of Cornell—The Definitive Autobiography","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129528743","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
