A secondary objective was to investigate the relationship between participation in gait rehabilitation research and social and clinical factors of interest after stroke.\u0000\u0000\u0000METHODS\u0000A questionnaire was developed with expert opinion and guidance from related previous research. The questionnaire was pilot tested in a group of 21 people with stroke, and social and clinical factors (including gait function) were collected. Gait function was assessed using a pressure-sensitive mat; social and clinical characteristics were extracted from patient charts. Correlations were performed to investigate relationships between questionnaire responses and gait function, motor impairment, and chronicity; t-tests were used to examine response differences between people with a caregiver at home and those without.\u0000\u0000\u0000RESULTS\u0000A total of 21 people with stroke completed the questionnaire without difficulty; mean completion time was 7.2 (SD 3.5) minutes, with a range of responses across participants. Borderline significant associations were found between gait function and the number of studies in which a person would participate and between stroke chronicity and the location of studies in which a person would participate.\u0000\u0000\u0000CONCLUSIONS\u0000A questionnaire to investigate the influence of study design factors on participation in rehabilitation research is feasible for administration in the post-stroke population and has potential to inform the design of future studies.
Physiotherapy Canada. Method : A sample of 15 adults (mean age 80.20 [SD 5.03] years) with AD performed three balance tests: the BBS, timed up-and-go test (TUG), and Functional Reach Test (FRT). Both relative reliability, using the intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC), and absolute reliability, using standard error of measurement (SEM) and minimal detectable change (MDC95) values, were calculated; Bland-Altman plots were constructed to evaluate inter-tester agreement. The test-retest interval was 1 week. Results : For the BBS, relative reliability values were 0.95 (95% CI, 0.85-0.98) for test-retest reliability and 0.72 (95% CI, 0.31-0.91) for interrater reliability; SEM was 6.01 points and MDC95 was 16.66 points; and interrater agreement was 16.62 points. The BBS performed better in test-retest reliability than the TUG and FRT, tests with established reliability in AD. Between 33% and 50% of participants required cueing beyond standardized instructions because they were unable to remember test instructions. Conclusions : The BBS achieved relative reliability values that support its clinical utility, but MDC95 and agreement values indicate the scale has performance limitations in AD. Further research to optimize balance assessment for people with AD is required.
Physiotherapy Canada. Employment location (rural vs. urban) was determined by postal code.\u0000\u0000\u0000RESULTS\u0000Only 11.2% of Saskatchewan physiotherapists listed a rural primary employment location, and a higher density of physiotherapists per 10,000 people work in health regions with large urban centres. Compared with urban physiotherapists, rural physiotherapists are more likely to provide direct patient care, to provide care to people of all ages, and to have a mixed client level, and they are less likely to be SPA members.\u0000\u0000\u0000CONCLUSIONS\u0000Rural and urban physiotherapists in Saskatchewan have different practice and professional characteristics. Methods : Participants underwent a median of eight treatment sessions, consisting of mobilizations with movement, eccentric muscle training, and high-voltage electrical stimulation. Outcomes were assessed with an 11-point numeric pain rating scale (NPRS; range 1-10) and the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand questionnaire (DASH; range 0%-100%). Result s: Median NPRS and DASH scores decreased from a baseline of 5 and 48, respectively, to 2.8 and 19 after treatment; at 6-month follow-up, all participants reported minimal pain and disability, but one participant required a corticosteroid injection shortly after discharge from physiotherapy. Conclusions : Overall outcome was considered successful for three of four patients, comparable to the success rate previously reported for corticosteroid injections. A randomized clinical trial evaluating the efficacy of this intervention seems warranted.
Physiotherapy Canada. Survey questions examined demographics, qualifications, experience, types of resources used, whether resources meet requirements, and what improvements could be made to current resources.\u0000\u0000\u0000RESULTS\u0000A total of 193 physiotherapists responded (75% response rate; 60% female), of whom 49% were age 35 years or younger; 67% had only an undergraduate qualification, and 37% had practised for 5 years or less. More experienced physiotherapists used resources significantly less frequently ([odds ratio]=1.35; 95% CI, 1.17-1.57), and we found no significant associations between preference for online versus printed resources and age, sex, qualifications, or experience. Trends included less experienced physiotherapists identifying the absence of online access as a barrier to resource use and provision of improved online facilities as necessary to improve access to clinical anatomy resources.\u0000\u0000\u0000CONCLUSION\u0000RESULTS indicate distinct trends in physiotherapists' use of clinical anatomy resources, including a desire for improved online resource access on the part of less experienced physiotherapists. Methods: A convenience sample of 10 students took a 5-week theoretical course, followed by 6 weeks spent assessing patients, establishing treatment plans, and monitoring their performance by telephone. Focus groups were held before and after the educational modules, with deductive mapping of themes to the Theory of Planned Behaviour and inductive analysis of additional themes. Results: Five themes and 22 subcategories emerged from the deductive-inductive focus group content analysis. After participating in the educational modules, students reported gaining knowledge about SMS and highlighted the lack of similar preparation during their academic courses. Nonetheless, they were hesitant to adopt SMS. Conclusion: Future clinicians gained knowledge and skills after being exposed to SMS courses, but their intention to adopt SMS in their future daily practice remained low. We also noted a lack of formal training in SMS in the academic setting. The findings from this study support incorporating SMS training into the curriculum, but to increase students' intention to use SMS as part of patient care, training may need to be in more depth than it was in the modules we used.
Physiotherapy Canada. Methods: We used a modified Delphi technique to identify the criteria required to assess PBs in PT students during an OSCE. We conducted a focus group to better understand the results of the modified Delphi process. Results: Experienced local OSCE examiners participated in the modified Delphi panel, which consisted of two rounds of surveys: round 1 (n=12) and round 2 (n=10). A total of 31 PBs were reduced to 18 through the two rounds. Five of the panellists participated in the focus group, reduced the 18 PBs to 15, and then identified 4 as clinical skills. Participants categorized the remaining 11 as mixed PBs and clinical skills (1 item), PBs (4 items), or communication skills (6 items). Conclusion: This study provides preliminary evidence to support the feasibility and importance of evaluating 5 PB items in practical skills OSCEs for entry-to-practice PT students.
Physiotherapy Canada. Methods: We conducted a quantitative, cross-sectional, Web-based survey. The target population consisted of Canadian physiotherapists who had experience as mentors. We used a modified Dillman approach to disseminate an online questionnaire to members of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association and its divisions using their respective e-blasts. We collected data on the nature and extent, facilitators, barriers, and benefits of mentorship and then analyzed them using descriptive statistics. Results: A total of 302 respondents were included in this study. They reported being a mentor to fellow PT colleagues (91%), undergraduate students (85%), graduate students (64%), and inter-professional colleagues (64%). We found that although many factors facilitated the respondents' ability to mentor, barriers to mentorship had minimal impact. Responses also reflected many perceived benefits of mentorship. Conclusions: This study provides novel evidence relating to the experience of mentorship from the perspective of mentors in the profession of PT. It reinforces the literature by highlighting the positive aspects of mentorship, and it underscores the continued need for support from professional associations, institutions, and physiotherapists to improve current mentorship experiences in PT.
Physiotherapy Canada.
