From synthesis parameters studied, F21 activated carbon with the largest surface area, total pore volume and diameter was obtained when sawdust is impregnated with ratio of 1:1 and treated with activation temperature of 500 °C for a period of 60 minutes. Through nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherm analysis, existence of mesopores was proven when a combination of Type-I and Type-II isotherms were exhibited by the activated carbon produced. The results from adsorption test showed that under the effect of initial concentration, the optimum sample is capable of removing 96.8% of MEA at low concentration of 100 ppm, while under the effect of stirring rate, 99.7% of MEA is removed at highest stirring rate at 400 rpm. Finally under the effect of contact time, 99.7% of MEA removal is achieved at time of 45 minutes. The obtained results show that agriculture waste product from sawdust can be effectively used as an adsorption material in MEA wastewater treatment.","PeriodicalId":39007,"journal":{"name":"Malaysian Journal of Analytical Sciences","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48979020","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Vickers hardness, electrical resistivity, X-ray diffraction and Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy have been carried out to assess the effects of Fe doping. These measurements indicate that the Fe doping decreased the critical temperature and deteriorated formation of high Tc phase, compared to undoped sample. Grain size of the samples were also reduced by increasing the amount of Fe and the mechanical properties were found to be escalate with the increasing of Fe concentration.","PeriodicalId":39007,"journal":{"name":"Malaysian Journal of Analytical Sciences","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67646623","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nowadays, the plastic used are originally from petroleum, in which is limited resources and non-degradable polymer that causes environmental problem. The jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus) has been commercially produced in the farming industry. Approximately 8 to 15 % of jackfruit are mostly thrown after consumption. Thus it can be used as the value added product development for future demand. In this study, the jackfruit seeds flour was plasticized by using glycerol, and blended with different ratios of polypropylene. The mechanical properties such as tensile strength, strain at break, flexibility and water absorption of fabricated bioplastic were investigated. The tensile strength and strain at break decreased with increasing of jackfruit seed flour content, while Young’s Modulus increased with the jackfruit seed flour content increased. Addition of polypropylene demonstrated higher water resistant ability. The jackfruit seed can be a new resource of bioplastic that could be preserved as a petrochemical resource and reduces the environmental impact. Keyword: bioplastic, jackfruit seed, mechanical properties, polypropylene, water absorption Abstrak Dalam kajian ini, bioplastik berjaya dihasilkan dari campuran tepung biji nangka/polipropilena. Kini, plastik yang digunakan berasal daripada petroleum, di mana sumber yang terhad dan polimer yang tidak boleh degradasi yang menyebabkan masalah kepada alam sekitar. Buah nangka (Artocarpus heterophyllus) telah dihasilkan secara komersil dalam industri pertanian. Kirakira 8 hingga 15% daripada nangka dibuang selepas penggunaan. Oleh itu, ia boleh digunakan sebagai nilai tambah produk untuk permintaan masa depan. Dalam kajian ini, tepung biji nangka telah diplastikkan dengan menggunakan gliserol, dan dicampur dengan polipropilena dengan nisbah yang berlainan. Sifat-sifat mekanik seperti kekuatan tegangan, ketegangan pada rehat, fleksibiliti dan penyerapan air bioplastik dikaji. Kekuatan tegangan dan ketegangan pada rehat menurun dengan peningkatan kandungan tepung biji nangka, sementara Modulus Young meningkat dengan kandungan tepung biji nangka meningkat. Penambahan polipropilena menunjukkan keupayaan tahan air yang lebih tinggi. Biji nangka dapat menjadi sumber bioplastik baru yang dapat dipelihara sebagai sumber petrokimia dan mengurangkan kesan kepada persekitaran. Phytochemical screening of the extracts was conducted to determine the active compounds using hexane and methanol solvents. The LC50 and LT50 values for both extracts against mosquito larvae were determined. This study was comprised of several methods namely collection of leaves of M. koenigii, extraction M. koenigii leaves with hexane and methanol sequentially, phytochemical screening and larvicidal bioassay on third instar larvae using three different concentrations (250, 500 and 750 ppm). Phytochemical screening revealed the presence of alkaloids, saponins, tannins, flavonoids and glycoside for methanol extract meanwhile negative results were obtained for hexane. Larvicidal bioassay of methanol and hexane extraction crudes gave the lowest LC50 and LT50, which were 250 ppm and 450 ppm with 36 hours, respectively. The plant extracts showed larvicidal activity against mosquito larvae at 0.05 level of significance in terms of concentration for hexane and duration for methanol. High larvicidal activity of M. koenigii leaves was supported by the presence of phytochemicals that shows synergistic effects in terms of larvicidal action to mosquito larvae. This study demonstrated that M. koenigii could be an effective mosquito larvicide.","PeriodicalId":39007,"journal":{"name":"Malaysian Journal of Analytical Sciences","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44993580","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Exploring it medicinal values will be an advantage because it can easily grow in Malaysia. The non-edible part which is the leaves of Musa acuminata ‘Dwarf Cavendish’ plant is analysed to determine the phytochemical constituents and antimicrobial properties. Two types of organic solvents used namely hexane and methanol. The antimicrobial properties of the extract produced were tested against Staphylococcus epidermidis and Trichophyton mentagrophytes by using disc-diffusion method. Phytochemical screening done on the sample showed that the methanolic extract contained bioactive components such as tannins, alkaloids, flavonoids, phenols, terpenoids and saponins whereas hexane extract indicated the presence of alkaloid. The methanolic extract of the leaves showed positive effects towards tested microorganisms whereas hexane extract showed vice versa. The best concentration of methanolic extract against S. epidermidis was 60 mg/ml and T. mentagrophytes were 40 mg/ml forming inhibition zone with diameter of 4.0 mm and 5.0 mm, respectively. Methanolic extract against S. epidermidis is comparable to ampicillin. Meanwhile, it is remarkable that methanolic extract of M. acuminata leaves showed stronger antifungal properties as compared to nystatin. As a conclusion, the methanolic extract of the leaves of M. acuminata ‘Dwarf Cavendish’ can be nominated as potential drug due to their antifungal properties.","PeriodicalId":39007,"journal":{"name":"Malaysian Journal of Analytical Sciences","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48948423","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The structures, composition and morphology of the samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), electron dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM). FESEM images shows that the samples were composed of Ag and ZnO with the particles size ranging from 100 to 500 nm. EDS analysis confirmed that atomic % increases as higher molar concentration applied with value of 5.6 at.% and 16.1 at.% for sample 0.05M and 0.1M AgNPs decorated ZnO microstructures. Methylene blue (MB) dye was used as a representative of dye pollutant to conduct the catalytic photodegradation activity. The AgNPs decorated with ZnO particles exhibited a better photocatalytic activity than the pure ZnO particles. The results show that an increasing of photodegradation rate constant, k was obtained when higher concentration of Ag was applied to the ZnO with value of 0.016, 0.026 and 0.032 min for pure ZnO, 0.05M AgZnO and 0.1M AgZnO nanoparticles, respectively. The increased of k value in the presence of Ag was due to the prolonged lifetime of the photogenerated electron hole pairs in ZnO as a result of Ag nanoparticles acting as electron sink.","PeriodicalId":39007,"journal":{"name":"Malaysian Journal of Analytical Sciences","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46622457","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
