Liquid membrane process is one of the potential methods to eliminate these unwanted particles from the wastewater. The most crucial part of the liquid membrane process is its formulation; especially the extractant or carrier. In order to find a suitable extractant, liquid-liquid extraction process was carried out. The effect of synergistic extractant to extract the Remazol Orange 3R reactive dyes in a shorter time and at a lower concentration of extractant was investigated in this study. Several parameters have been studied such as extractant type, extractant concentration, synergist extractant type and synergist extractant concentration. The results show that, Remazol Orange 3R reactive dyes were extracted by tridodecylamine (TDA) as a base and trioctylamine (TOA) as a synergist extractant. Meanwhile, the salicyclic acid (SA) was used to protonate the TDA and TOA, and cooking palm oil was used as a diluent. The performance of extraction of reactive dyes at the 0.1 M concentration of extractant was 70% when synergistic system was applied compared to single extractant which was only 50% of the dyes have been extracted. Therefore, the synergistic extractant has a potential to be further utilised in liquid membrane studies on the extraction of reactive dyes.","PeriodicalId":39007,"journal":{"name":"Malaysian Journal of Analytical Sciences","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-08-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44696234","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The effect of waterbased ultrasonic assisted extraction at various temperature (30 to 60 °C) and time (5 to 30 minutes) on the total phenolic, flavonoid content and antioxidant activity in C. nutans leaves extract was investigated. Acquired extract was quantified for its total phenolic, flavonoid content and antioxidant activity by Folin-Ciocalteu, aluminium chloride test and 2, 2-diphenyl-1picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay, respectively. The result has revealed that the highest temperature led to the degradation of bioactive compound in C. nutans leaves. The highest phenolic content and antioxidant activity achieved at 55 °C and 25 minutes with 13.87 ± 0.15 mg gallic acid g dry sample and 52.88 ± 3.91% inhibition, respectively. Meanwhile, greatest flavonoid content was obtained for 12.25 ± 1.01 mg quercetin g of dry sample at 55 °C and 15 minutes of extraction. From this study, it was shown that C. nutans extraction has gained benefit from ultrasonic assisted extraction and has possibilities of being used for the herbs utilisation of beneficial food materials, nutraceuticals and pharmaceuticals at manufacturing industry.","PeriodicalId":39007,"journal":{"name":"Malaysian Journal of Analytical Sciences","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-08-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48445967","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Management of the waste faces a significant challenge especially on choosing the appropriate method by considering the possibilities of contaminating the environment. This study aims to add value to UFO by producing high oleic palm oil. Enzymatic acidolysis using lipase was employed to incorporate oleic acid in the UFO. This study also investigated the effect of enzymatic loading, reaction time and water content on the properties of modified UFO as to find the optimum condition for oleic acid incorporation. Oleic acid incorporation was quantified based on peroxide and iodine values. The optimum conditions for acidolysis process were obtained at enzyme loading of 30% (w/w), reaction time of 24 hours, and water content of 2% (w/w) with substrate mole ratio of 1:2 (UFO: oleic acid) and temperature of 50 °C. At optimum conditions, the modified used frying palm oil (MUFO) has peroxide and iodine values of 19.00 ± 0.99 meq/mg and 31.5 ± 0.42 mg/mg, respectively. After the acidolysis reaction, oleic acid concentration has increased from 27.00 ± 0.70% (v/v) to 62.34 ± 1.29% (v/v), demonstrating their feasibility as a substrate for structured lipid production.","PeriodicalId":39007,"journal":{"name":"Malaysian Journal of Analytical Sciences","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-08-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48045366","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is driven by natural osmotic pressure difference between draw solution and feed solution across semipermeable membrane. Pure water will permeated from the salinity feed water to the draw solution side. In order to produce pure water, it is necessary to find the best draw solute that exhibits high draw ability and can separate the permeated water efficiently from the draw solution. In the current study, lower critical solution temperature (LCST) thermos-responsive ionic liquid (IL) of tetrabutylphosphonium trifluoroacetate ([P4444]CF3COO) was synthesized as the draw solution for FO process. [P4444]CF3COO) is dissolved in water below it critical temperature of 29°C and becoming two layer above this critical temperature. [P4444]CF3COO IL showed high water flux of 0.44 ± 0.007 LMH compared to the water flux of 0.32 ± 0.049 LMH for the sodium chloride (NaCl) draw solution at the same draw solution concentration. Applying thermo-responsive IL as draw solute in FO process has the potential to treat high salinity of feed stream with eases water recovery and draw solute regeneration.","PeriodicalId":39007,"journal":{"name":"Malaysian Journal of Analytical Sciences","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-08-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42994300","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
