Inspired by the increased need for effective social work research to address the dynamic and complex practice in China, Peking University-The Hong Kong Polytechnic University China Social Work Research Centre has been committed to developing and promoting of social work practice research in recent years. The centre has already organised several international seminars on practice research and developed a series of pertinent training programmes, which have significantly advanced practice research, particularly action research in the context of China. In November 2021, an international conference entitled “Dialogue: International Conference on Social Work Practice Research” was jointly held by the centre, the Department of Sociology of Peking University and the Department of Applied Social Sciences of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. A group of leading scholars who had greatly contributed to the development of social work practice research were invited to attend the conference and share their new ideas and the latest research in the field. The conference gained great success, and some speakers were invited to write their reports and publish in the China Journal of Social Work. The theme of this special issue is “Social work practice research: philosophy, ethic and practices”, which contains seven articles based on the invited talks given at the conference. The first article by Irwin Epstein was mainly inspired by the work of Greek philosopher Alexander Nehamas and conceptualised the relationship between practice and research in social work as a “virtue friendship”. It claimed that practice and research in social work did not just mutually benefit each other but also engaged together in cultivating “virtue friendship” between them. Irwin Epstein recommended that Cicero’s ever-relevant question “Cui Bono?” should be asked to evaluate the contributions of practice research to social work practice and policy. He particularly advocated using clinical data mining as an important approach to practice research in social work. It is always enlightening to see practice research in social work as a “virtue friendship”. In the second article, Martin Webber emphasised the significance of methodological pluralism in social work practice research. He used an intervention model entitled “Connecting People” as an example to illustrate the necessity of employing multiple methods to develop and evaluate social interventions. The article introduced the application of Connecting People in England and indicated that the development of the model started with a thorough understanding of the need for the intervention. To be specific, Connecting People was developed from an ethnography of social work practice and then piloted in quasi-","PeriodicalId":38938,"journal":{"name":"China Journal of Social Work","volume":"4 1","pages":"207 - 209"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79114012","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is particularly the case for developing and evaluating interventions for use by social workers in multiple contexts. This paper illustrates the multiple methods required to develop and evaluate social interventions, using the example of Connecting People. The intervention model was developed from an ethnography of social work practice and piloted in a quasi-experimental study. Focus groups and semi-structured interviews were used alongside a further quasi-experimental study to examine its implementation in one particular practice setting. A randomised controlled trial is currently underway to evaluate the effectiveness of the model in another country. Practice researchers need to develop expertise in multiple methods to respond flexibly to the demands of intervention development and evaluation in social work practice research.","PeriodicalId":38938,"journal":{"name":"China Journal of Social Work","volume":"32 1","pages":"221 - 232"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79129967","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Identity formation and maintenance are complex, transactional relationships negotiated through interpersonal interactions and constantly adapting to the people we meet. Identity is culturally specific and changes through exchanges between and across cultures. Identity formation is fluid, dynamic, and reproduced through interaction with others. Identity is negotiated through power relations to create feelings of “belonging” and acceptance in specific situations and locales. Being accepted as belonging establishes an individual’s and community’s entitlement to human rights in society through social inclusion and exclusion processes. Working with those who do not “belong”, social workers aware of the impact of the social construction of identity should treat people with respect and dignity and provide necessary services.","PeriodicalId":38938,"journal":{"name":"China Journal of Social Work","volume":"1 1","pages":"250 - 261"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75775979","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It was difficult for us to find a useful textbook for our students as they thought the book we recommended was either too difficult or boring. When we read the book Do it Yourself Social Research (Third Edition) written by Yoland Wadsworth, we felt very excited as it was very interesting, easy and practical. We decided to write the book review and recommend this book to social work students who have no confidence or are losing interest in doing social research. We hope social work students can regain their confidence and interest in learning research methods. The main purpose of the book is to provide methodological guidelines for novice researchers to guide them through a social research process with no or little support from experienced researchers. Along this line, the book’s primary audiences are individuals with high research interests but little or no previous research experience. Once Wadsworth established the primary audience for the book in the first chapter, she defined what it means to social research and its ten golden rules that range from asking genuine questions to conducting field research and communicating research findings. Then, she discussed the strategies for managing resources (people, money and time) at the researcher’s disposal. Discussions on designs, methods and techniques are followed. The book also guides how to analyse the collected data and inform human action. The latter is at the centre of the book, in which she recommended participatory action research over others. She noted, “Action research . . . places the research in a timeframe whereby, instead of a one-off, linear inquiry that ‘starts’ with questions and ‘ends’ with answers . . . it may instead be thought of as a process or series of cycles that ‘begin’ with ‘old’ action and ‘ends’ with ‘new’ action, incorporating research continuously as feedback from and to action” (113). The stress on action research might be because the author co-founded and led the Action Research Issues Centre in Melbourne, Australia. We echo her view not only because we are also action researcher but also this research approach well connects to social work professional values. To put it simply, the author takes the reader through the basics of research, including why, where and how to start; how to conduct and manage a research project; and how to communicate findings and inform human action. The book concludes by suggesting some further readings. The book has many strengths and a few limitations from our perspective. Let us begin with the strengths. From the outset, the author identified that “scientific jargons” (not science), often from the quantitative category, are among the core factors that push novice researchers away from the world of inquiry. She argued,","PeriodicalId":38938,"journal":{"name":"China Journal of Social Work","volume":"21 1","pages":"321 - 323"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77775661","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Some have tried integrating action research into social work education and practice. However, many people only learn the form but do not seriously uphold the spirit of action research and understand its mission of knowledge building. Therefore, this article first introduces the key elements of participatory action research (PAR) and then uses a PAR project of rural social work as an example to demonstrate how researchers collaborate with frontline practitioners and local villagers to co-create knowledge in pursuit of a practical solution to problems of rural development in post-reform China. Finally, the paper will conclude with a theory of rural-urban alliance which has been generated in the PAR process. I hope this article will become the text for dialogues within the social work action research community in Mainland China.","PeriodicalId":38938,"journal":{"name":"China Journal of Social Work","volume":"7 1","pages":"233 - 249"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82120404","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is similar in terms of common research methods applied to essential social work practice issues. But practice research is quite different when it comes to framing and negotiating the research questions, engaging in participatory data analysis, and using research findings. This paper introduces core elements of practice research to social work scholars and researchers in relation the evolving context of social service delivery in China. This analysis features the evolving definition of practice research along with the principles that guide the conduct of practice research. Included in this discussion is a comparative analysis with other research methods and an illustrative case related to evidence-informed practice. It concludes with a discussion of considerations for scholars and researchers invested in the improvement of social services in diverse Chinese contexts.","PeriodicalId":38938,"journal":{"name":"China Journal of Social Work","volume":"222 1","pages":"270 - 286"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73624009","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
