The aim of the current study was to assess and compare Bulgarian and Turkish medical students' levels of stress and depression. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 546 students (276 foreign students from Medical University – Sofia and 270 medical students from several medical universities in Ankara). The study instrument included basic socio-demographic questions, Medical Student Stressor Questionnaire (MSSQ-40 items) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Turkish medical students showed higher levels of stress and depression than foreign students from Bulgaria. We found that all types of stressors in medical students had a relationship with depression. Results of our study imply that medical students need access to psychological support throughout their education.","PeriodicalId":38881,"journal":{"name":"Social Medicine","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75337421","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

В едно застаряващо общество, където хроничните заболявания са най-честата причина за болка, страдания и смърт, очакванията се насочват към неизползваните възможности на сътрудничеството между източната и западната медицина. Изясняването на въпроса за навлизането на източната медицина в Новото обществено здравеопазване предполага един качествено нов поглед към допълващите възможности в профилактиката и лечението, идващи от Изтока. Главната цел на настоящата статия е да представи стъпките на сътрудничеството между източната и западната медицина, осъществявано в Университетския център по източна медицина, Медицински университет „Проф. д-р Параскев Стоянов“, Варна. Представени са трите стъпки: сравнителен анализ на източната и западната медицина; проучване на нуждите, вярванията и нагласите на българския гражданин; анализ на ситуацията в български условия. Доказва се полезността от съчетаване на методите на източната и западната медицина в университетска среда, насочено към взаимно потенциране на ефектите им за промяна в качеството на живот на българския пациент. Abstract: The priority for medical professionals while dealing with chronic illness is to solve the patient's problem in its holistic totality, not just to diagnose with the help of narrow-specialized and high-tech medicine. In an aging society, where chronic diseases are the most common cause of pain, suffering and death, expectations are shifting to the unutilized opportunities for collaboration between Eastern and Western medicine. The clarification of the issue regarding the entry of Eastern medicine into the New Public Health presupposes a qualitatively new look at the complementary prevention and treatment opportunities coming from the East. The main purpose of this article is to outline the steps of collaboration between Eastern and Western Medicine at the University Center of Eastern Medicine, Medical University ″ Prof. Dr. Paraskev Stoyanov ″ , Varna. The following three steps are presented: a comparative analysis of Eastern and Western medicine; study of the needs, beliefs and attitude of the Bulgarian citizen; analysis of the situation in Bulgarian conditions. The usefulness of combining the methods of Eastern and Western medicine in a university environment, aimed at the mutual potentiating of their effects in order tochange the quality of life of the Bulgarian patient, has been proven.","PeriodicalId":38881,"journal":{"name":"Social Medicine","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73678802","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Освен добре познатите библейски текстове, които ни отпращат към V в. пр. Хр., е обърнато по-специално внимание на действията на миланските и дубровнишките власти от 70-те г. на XIV в., с които се целяло ограничаването на чумната епидемия от периода. Дадени са кратки сведения и за организирането на други западноевропейски карантинни изолатори и лазарети в края на XIV и през XV в. Във втората част на статията са представени накратко религиозните постановки на исляма, довели до развиването на чувство на фатализъм сред мюсюлманското население на Османската империя пред лицето на смъртоносните епидемии, поради което тя се превърнала в гнездо на чумна зараза за Европа. Особено внимание е обърнато на организирането на карантинната служба на тази империя в края на 30-те и началото на 40-те години на XIX в. Значителна част от разказа е посветена на организацията на първите карантинни постове и лазарети по българските земи, които се дължали в значителна степен на пионерските усилия на френския лекар Брюно Тарон. Summary: The article provides brief notes on the earliest known quarantine restrictions, about which we have reliable information. In addition to the well-known biblical texts that refer us to the 5th century BC, particular attention is paid to the actions of the Milanese and Dubrovnikan authorities from the 1370s, aiming at curbing the plague epidemic at that period. Brief information was also provided on the organization of other Western European quarantine isolators and infirmaries in the late 14th and 15th centuries. The second part of the article briefly presents the religious teachings of Islam that led to the development of a sense of fatalism among the Muslim population of the Ottoman Empire in the face of deadly epidemics, which made it a plague-infested nest for Europe. Particular attention is paid to the organization of the quarantine service of this empire in the late 30's and early 40's of the 19th century. Much of the story is devoted to the organization of the first quarantine posts and infirmaries in the Bulgarian lands, which was largely due to the pioneering efforts of the French physician Bruno Taron.","PeriodicalId":38881,"journal":{"name":"Social Medicine","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86690663","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Resume: Background: Pharmaceutical care is an essential part of the total care for people with mental health problems. Globally, anxiety and depression are major causes of mental health-related burden of diseases. These disorders are often “hidden” because of comorbidity. Late consultation with a psychiatrist, delayed treatment, improper therapeutic plan, and poor compliance to the prescribed treatment can lead to disease progression and disability. Treatment with antidepressants is a standard approach to depressive and anxiety patients, but effective treatment needs to be strict. Poor compliance to treatment is related to side effects, poor patient awareness, polypragmasia, lack of communication with healthcare professionals.
